JUNHURS JUNIOR-SENIOR BANOUE T t Emitting school spirit from every pore. each junior pitched in to do his share in earning money, acl- vertising. and staging the junior-Senior Banquet. Selling concessions at basketball games and sponsor- ing tlanees galore were their thief means of finanting the banquet. Another long-awaited moment in the lives of the Jolly juniors was the selection of class jewelry- rings. pins, and necklates. The first few weeks after the arrixal of the jewelry evidenced continuous waving of hands to show off the new rings. and the following weeks resulted in the ever-popular swap- ping of class rings. 35 'I L' N' 'I K x X -1 C tl., S KD .F J 5 8 in Y fi sn., ' 1 K, I Lain? We kept Marie husy all year working to put out the XVILD- CQA'l', and as its co-editor, she did a demanding ioh well. Behind those hright hlue eyes lies a good hit of gray matter, too, for Marie kept her grades 'way up there and rated the second highest average in her Soplloiiiore class. Holding down an offiee is nothing new to this eharmer, for she has heen setretary of the Footlighters, secretary and vite president of the Latin Cluh. treasurer of the Dehate Cluh, secretary of her iunior class. and corresponding setretarx' of the senior class ln addition to this impressive list, Marie ahly dem- onstrated her leadership on the Presi- dents' flouneil for the last three years hy rising to the position of vice presi- dent. On the athletic side. our lass from Lula played intramural lwaskethall two years and was a memlwer of the G.A.A. She received the P.T,A, Citizenship Award in the eleventh grade and also represented us at Girls' State that year. One of Maries many activities that re- quired real hrainwork was the Debate Team, on whieh she plead the aflirma- tive cause for the past two years. She served the SPOTLIGHT as its circula- tion manager and was rewarded for her efforts hy Quill and Scroll, of which she was a two-year memher. This year Marie nailed down one of the leads in the senior play and turned out a performance that was tops. Elected Most Likely to Succeed, shes truly an all-round girlfa deserving ad- dition to the Hall of Fame. Mildred Mullen, who has been a par- ticipant in practically every musical ac- tivity at CHS, is most likely to be the one. As a climax to four years of memf bership in the band Cincluding one year as first lieutenantj and Band Court, Mildred Mullen was crowned Band Queen in a colorful ceremony held in the City Auditorium, May 17, 1957. Mildred, who has given generously of her talents to the orchestra for three years, was twice chosen to be in the All-State Orchestra. She attended the District Band Clinic for two years and the State Clinic her junior year. Singing in both the Girls' Ensemble and the A Cappella Choir, she has taken part in the District Choral Festival, the State Choral Festival, and State Solo and En- semble contests. Mildred has been both treasurer and secretary-treasurer of the A Cappella Choir. Not limited to music alone, she branched out into other fields as a junior librarian assistant and an alter- nate to Girls' State. Mildred won the P. T. A. Good Citizenship Award as a sophomore and the D. A. R. Essay Award in her junior year. In the intra- mural basketball season of 1956-1951 she was manager for joyce's Demons. Still having a little time left over, she worked on the Red Cross Council as its secretary and did an admirable job for the WILDCAT as its class editor for two years. Proof of Mildred's popularity is her election of the Who's Who for four years. This charming girl plainly de- serves her title of Most Talentedng and what is more, she deserves the Hall of Fame. Delegates elected their own officials to city. county. and state governments and learned the duties of the various public offices. Sessions of their state legislature were held in the capitol, where the embryo officials introduced and argued their own bills. A big moment for all was the reception at the governors mansion, Inspired by new friendships and a practical working knowledge of government, our girls and boys returned home for their final year of high school. trained to furnish leadership in both school and community. Garry Falls took the spotlight when he, as T. Newton Todd, a stuttering, blundering, yet lovable sixteen-year old interested in breeding earthworms, and his good-looking, militarily- gruff father. Major Michael Todd, played by Cary Fondren, came to live with the Cassells. Things were running smoothly for Michael and Nina Cassell, a charming young widow and mother of two girls fMarie Keeseej as Newton laboriously studied to retain good grades so that his father would not exterminate his breeding stock. No time was left for Newton to take an interest in the activities of the town's teen-tigers, including Tony Cassell fPeggy Mooneyj whose main problems were keeping her best friend Pinkie Ames fMary Edmunds Cockej from stealing her boyfriend, Dunk Doyle fW'alter Boonel and making her ten-year-old sister Scootie fPatsy Gerrard, refrain from emptying the house of all its tin and iron for wartime purposes. As a counterattack on Pinkiels efforts to get a date with Dunk for the forthcoming Red Cross Benefit. Tony set her trap for Dunk's pal and Pinkie's ex-boy- friend, Bing Hotchkiss fHarold Simmonsjg and Genevieve jones, the neighborhood pest CSue Dismukej, after desperately trying to wheedle a date from every other available male in town, decided to make a play for Newton. Then came the Tupelo game, at which the crowds were wild with excitement and the team played harder than ever before! Percy, who stored both touchdowns, running 80 yards for one, was indeed the hero of this game! After a close 13-7 victory, the beaming XVildcats were eagerly greeted with shouts and cheers by the Clarksdale fans upon their return to the motel. It's not the final score that counts, but how you played the game. In spite ofa 19-losses and 2-wins result, the 1956-1957 Wildcilt basketball season cannot he called unsuccessful, for the members of the team played their hardest in each game and displayed their spirit even in the losing moments of a game. However, the B team tilted the scales to the winning column with a 9-7 record. In keeping with an agreement at the beginning of the season. this was used as a rebuilding year for the Wfildcats under the coaching of Gene L. Barbour. The team, composed mostly ol' juniors and sophomores, with only two seniors, co-captains jerry Lubiani and Percy Kaigler. co-operated fully and gained vital experience to be used to a great advantage next year. Richard won the mile crown of the Big Eight tnorth division and over-alll as well as the Class A-AA titles of the State, North Mississippi, and Delta. He set a new all-time school record for the mile with his 4140.5 in the North Big Eight at Greenwood. Richard also won a track grant-in-aid from Ole Miss. Next highest point-winners included half-miler Wfoody Dabbs. hurdler jerry Lubiani, and shot putter john Orman. Wfoody won points in every meet. He finished fourth in the Big Eight and State, second in the Delta and North Mississippi in his specialty. jerry was third in the 180-yard low sticks in the Delta and fourth in the Big Eight. john was Delta runner-up in the shot. The squad, directed by Coaches Steinriede and Mangum, did not have team totals that ranked at the top in most meets. But the Wildcat total represented only points from boys' events, while in several major meets most of the other participating schools also competed in girls' events.
