CLARKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL ll-1cm1-lg1ql1lr-ne-n-ul-n1ul1ua--n1ln--ll1llil HISTORICAL NOTES l1g1q1gp-n l.1.l.1gl-q.1qp1gq1gg1.l-ql N the northwestern corner of Ross County is Deerfield Township. This township was laid out by an order of county commissioners, made 1 july 7, 1804. At this time the township was much larger than at pres- ent. It included portions of what is now Pickaway, Fayette, and Madison Counties in addition to portions of Union and Concord Townships of Ross County. George Clark in 1817 laid out the village of Clarksburg. It is in the north-central portion of Deerfield Township. The village was incorporated in 1872. The first religious class in the township was established by Reverend John Sale, a Methodist, at the cabin of White Brown in 1803. This is the origin of Brown's Chapel, located in the eastern section of the township. The Asbury Chapel group, in the western section, dates from 1814. The Baptist Society, in the northeastern section, was organized in 1820. This society is now inactive. The Methodist Episcopal Church, the first within the village, was begun in 1835. The location of the present church is on High Street. The Christian Church, at the corner of High and Water Streets, was organized in 1845. The Clarksburg Commercial Bank, at the corner of Main and High, was built in 1912. The Town Hall on Main Street was erected in 1906. Due to the efforts of George Smith a village school was organized in 1820. The location of the building was probably at the present site of the Town Hall on Main Street. It is known that there was a two-story frame school building on this lot in the fifties and sixties. About the year 1873 a two-story brick school building was erected in the southern section of the village, on the Frankfort pike. In the late eighties the school was made a township school and a high school was established. A two-story brick build-- ing, which is used by the lower grades at the present time, was erected out- side the village, to the West. The first High School teacher was Mr. Jacob Selig. The first class, con- sisting of two members, graduated in 1892. Mr. J. W. Reynolds was the teacher at that time. The High School was made a Second Grade School in 1894. The present charter, making it a First Grade School, was issued February 3, 1912. Because of the crowded conditions a one-story frame building was erected for the High School in 1910. Our present High School building was completed in 1914. Mr. I. L. Fortney, the Superintendent of the Township Schools, was instrumental in securing the erection of the new buildings and in making the school a First Grade School. Due to the efforts of the Parent Teachers Association a large Commun- ity House was erected upon the school grounds in 1922. T-he value of this building to the school can not be overestimated. V The population of our village is five hundred. Two hundred ninety pupils are enrolled in the public schools, the high school numbering fifty- four and the grades two hundred thirty-six. f
