OUR BOARD 0F DIRECTCRS On May 26, 1950, the four school boards of the districts of Abington lndependent, Clarks Green, Clarks Summit, and South Abington voted to form a ioint school district to be effective beginning July 1, 1950. We believe that the primary purpose of the consolidation, better educational services to all the children of the new district, has been at least partially accomplished. Some of the advantages which we have noticed are a full commercial course, a hot lunch program for all schools, kindergartens for all the elementary schools, greater emphasis on the guidance service for the high school, a broader in- dustrial arts and home economics offering, enlarged library, improved science facilities, and provisions for the addition of third year French. As members of the Class of 1951 we recognize and appreciate that it is necessary I for the members of the ioint boards to devote many long hours to planning and con- ductin the o eration of our new 'oint district. We know that as a reuslt of wise xy 9 P I 4 1' ' planning and the cooperation of taxpayers, the school board has accomplished much for the benefit of our class and the entire school. L N ' -0 W x X ,, A L , . , X Fl Q I N if ill The evenings of December 14 and l5 proved to be delightful ones for the people of the Abmg tons .loyous music echoed through the halls of Abington High School as the operetta An Old Spanish Custom was presented by the Music Department and the senior class Baritone Bob Roberts played a dual role that of Don Jose the Spanish fool and Joe the brave captam of the notorious mght riders Joyce Walker was excellent in her portrayal of Billy Day daughter of an eastern railroad tycoon Rudy Holtzman and Shirley Parkton provided the romantic highlights while Alice Eck and Bill Phillips were the comedians of the production Alice outstanding in her role of Maggie Murphy Ruta LaSorsa and Myrna Gritman showed much talent in their respective roles as Maria an old Mexican woman who had reared Don Jose, and Kit, a sweet young thing who lured unsuspecting State Policeman, J. Harvey Sproul, into a love nest. Dick York did a fine iob as Silas Day, sly business- man. Throughout the show the chorus was ever present, providing much gay music and giving color to the production. Spectacular dances at intervals proved very entertaining. E 931 Apfffflf f-of In April thirty six members of the Workshop Ex change of Newton High School in Massachusetts paid a vislt to Abington High School for a week ln May thirty six members of a simnlar group of A HS stu dents made a trip to Newton The trips however were not arranged merely for pleasure The primary purpose was to create better understanding among high school students of the Umted States and to study different types of com munlhes by actually living in the community attending school and studymg the industries The two schools differ greatly Newton serves a large metropolitan area in a typical New England state, while our school IS in a suburban community in the heart of the anthraclte coal mining area Durmg the winter members of the AH S group corresponded with their Newton pen pals They also did research work in the community studied the his tory of Lackawanna County and Pennsylvania general and made an extensive survey of the coal mining industry and its related fields The exchange of students while not a new venture for the students of Newton was a totally new one for us at Clarks Summit Abington lt is sincerely hoped that this is not the last trip but lust a beginning for visits to other schools TY . . .
