Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1978 volume:

Feelings Feeling?, nothing more than feelings, trying to forget my feelings of love. Teardrops rolling down on my face, trying to forget my feelings of love. Feelings, for all my life I'll feel it. I wish I'd never met you, girl; you'll never come again. Feelings, wo wo wo, feelings, wo wo wo, feel you again in my arms. Feelings, feelings likal've never lost you, and feelings like I’ll never have you again in my heart. Feelings, for all my life I'll feel it I wish I've nev KeI you, girl: you'll never gome again. Feelings, feelings like I've never lost you, and feelings like I'll never have you Feelings, wo wo wo feelings, wo wo wo, feelings again in my arms Copyright (C) 1974 by Editora Augusta Ltda Avemda Ipiranga, 1100 — Sao Paulo, Brasil All Flights for U.S.A. We've all come for different reasons. No matter how we may have begun, we find ourselves at the same con- clusion — where did time go? When we walked through that kindergar- ten door, we were afraid. Now that we are finally opening another door, again, we find that we are still afraid. In 1965, when we walked through that same door, we left the warmth and comfort of our mother’s arms. It was a cold feeling. Things got better though, and somehow we stumbled along life's cobblestone road. Eventually, we were no longer afraid. The doors became the shelter from the cold of the world. Now we find that as we leave, we are once again like the little child who shrugs away from leaving the warmth of friendships dis- covered. But, we know that we are tomorrow’s adults, changing what needs to be changed, trying things that had never been dared before. The possibilities of a different tomorrow tempt us to come farther out, away from the handle of the door. We are brought out further into the maze of life until suddenly from far away, we hear the echo of a door closed. Then we realize that what has been, has been great, but what could be” . . . Marilyn Zoucha Editor 2 Feelings of the past. . . Class History Full of dreams and anxiety, 22 little people stormed the Kindergarten for day one of what was to soon be known as “reading, writing, and arithmetic.” Among the pairs of knocking knees were: Kevin Miller, Sharen Brunken, Dawn Van Pelt, Luann Geier, Linda Fleeman, Tom Pickrel, Kurt Kuhn, Marjorie Earl, Tim Beck, Kristine Boroviak, Lou Anne Miller, Mark McNeal, Rex Kuhn, Chris Huston, Marilyn Zoucha, Gae Johnson, Jim Danklesen, Janet Wurtz, Connie Kennedy, Dallas Grause, Dennis Szatko and Dick Church. Helping us along the way for “year one was our teacher Mrs. Kivett. Our first grade teacher, Mrs. Baird helped us learn many duties. In our first grade year, we lost a friend, Marjorie Earl. Our second grade was a year full of surprises and many class projects. During this year, we learned many things — like how not to go out and play in the water. This year was also a memorable one because we made our spotted girafes. These became a point of pride for many of us. Among those learning with us came Jerry Gabriel and Robert Brandenburger. We were very sorry to see Connie Kennedy leave us. Our teacher this year was the kind-hearted Mrs. Moore. One of the most memorable activities of third grade was recess. During our third grade year, we gained as friends: Dotty Jacobi and Tad Dittmer. Our faithful leader this year was Mrs. Sundberg. Besides gaining experience our fourth grade year, we gained Kenny Rieken. Even though life seemed fairly carefree during that year, Mrs. Nepermann kept us on our toes learning all the time. Many times it was not about school, it was about ourselves. We bid a fond farewell that year to Luann Geier, still a dear friend. Excitement mounted to a fever pitch in the fifth grade. We were all anxious for a successful “Hobby Show.” With Miss Zoucha’s help, not only was the “Hobby Show a success, the whole year went splendidly. Our fifth grade year, we welcomed Michael Sliva to our group. This year we were saddened with news of the death of Mike in the summertime. In our sixth grade year. Miss Test gave a new light to the word discipline. But with discipline came respect. Miss Test not only helped us to like school, but to like ourselves. Our class size remained the same this year. With seventh grade, came the title “junior high.” We were no longer graders. In fact, Mr. Toczek informed us that we were now “young adults.” Those also gaining that new title were LuAnne Engel and Rian Botts. Dotty Jacobi left us for new responsibilities. Our sponsor for this year was Mr. Kreps. For our eighth grade graduation, Ned Wemhoff joined the ranks of those leaving “junior high. Rian Botts left before this occasion, but Mr. Kreps and Mrs. Allen helped lead us to the gates of “high school. Joining us for new experiences during our fresnman year were: Joey Grella, Ron Richards and Marge Ziemba. Our freshman year taught us many things. Like how not to get initiated, something which some never learned. We had just gained Joey, but he left us during the same year. Our sponsors helping us through this difficult year were: Mrs. Ueckert and Mr. Kreps. Our sophomore year was a pretty eventful one. During this year, we ordered our class rings. This year went by fast, but it will be one year long remembered for the many class and assignments. Joining us for a year of hard work were: Pam Kelso, Jim Pratt, Dave Mundorf and Randy Wilson. Pam, Jim, Dave, Randy and Dallas Grause left us this year. Our sponsors this year were Mr. Kreps and Mr. Anderson. Our junior year the pace quickened a bit. What with deciding on prom, it is a wonder anything else got done. But with a lot of hard work, our prom became known as one of the prettiest ever to have taken place. Our theme was “Times of Your Life. All of our work and plan ning showed to all that we had the ability to work together to accomplish a project very worthwhile. Our sponsors throughout this hard work were Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Barbour. During this year Pete Upton joined our class and Dick Church and Marge Ziemba Church left us. After waiting for thirteen years, our senior year finally came. Time passed very quickly, but the memories made will be remembered forever. New friends were: Kathy Townsend and Terry Lippstreu. Our sponsors were Mrs. Vyhlidal and Mr. F. Steinhoff. One of the most memorable nights in our life will be going to the school board to request that we be allowed to go to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO. The feeling of being told yes is unexplainable. To say we were happy put it very lightly. On April 14, 1978 the junior class held the annual Jr-Sr prom. Their theme was Moments to Remember. The band that played for our enjoyment was “Cottonwood. The dance lasted from 9 till 12:00. We will never be able to express our thanks to them for a fine prom. Many things, events, experiences happened this year. We like to think that we were a part of them. The greatest event happened on May 14, 1978, at 7:30 PM. Graduation. To live with and learn from so many different people, and then to have to leave them is another unex- plainable feeling. You would like to hold onto these people and feelings forever. We would like to thank everyone who ever helped us, whoever was our friends, to any one who gave us a friendly smile an encourageing word. Believe me, you will never be forgotten. This class “history is already history. After May 14, it may even be forgotten. The halls at oP Clarks High may be hollow and silent for a few months, but maybe, occasionally, if you listen very closely, you may just hear, “Wanda, Wanda!!!” T Feelings for the future . . . The vibrant class of '78, Has had quite an exciting fate. When we look into the future you soon will see, What each of them turned out to be. Lou Anne Miller, as you can see. Has her business school degree. She married a guy from Wayne State. 1 heard her say it was love the first date. Trigger and Betty is a new T.V. show. And Tim’s little kids sit all in a row, Watching the trials of their mom and dad. As they shoot up the guys that are bad. Rex Kuhn’s as busy as a wolf in his lair. He doesn’t ever have a moment to spare. The girls follow Lunar waiting for a chance. For one long night filled with romance. The hogs were rooting in the old farm yard. Where old farmer Dennis keeps up his guard. He's got a young son and a hillbilly wife. And he’ll be contented the rest of his life. Kathy, whose stay in Clarks was so short. Is now a stenographer in a high court. By the judge she sits away up high. Watching cute guys and winking her eye. Who's that walking so proud and tall? It’s Marilyn Zoucha and her basketball. When she's not playing with the pro’s. She keeps women libers on their toes. Why that’s Ned Wemhoff coming this way. He's become a famous artist, so they say. He paints in the day light and polkas at night. And all of the girls think he's out of sight. On the dusty, old road, we see go by, Tom Pickrel’s truck, flying by. On the C.B., he’s known as Big Red, Telling all in his way to look out ahead! Now look who just happened to drop in. It’s Marge Church, who’s been visiting her kin. She’s so busy with her family life. She enjoys cooking and being a wife. Most of the farming land around here. Was bought by one we all hold dear. Kurt Kuhn is a most famous farmer. And also with ladies, a definite charmer. Working with electricity and all of it’s sparks. He turns on the girls and opens their hearts. Now Chris, you see, will give you the light. He turns on his smile and makes your life bright. That’s Gae Johnson in her rocking chair. Yes, she’s the one with the pretty brown hair. She’s known all over, from coast to coast. For the tenderest way of making her roast. Lu is a jockey, in the big time races. And she'll pul a smile on everyone’s faces. With her speed and also her style. She’ll be in headlines for quite awhile. Jim Dankelson is known in the big headlines. For he’s now a racer, with the greatest times. Also, with women he’s known for his speed. So, all you single gals, be sure to take heed. Terry Lippstreu, who is known for his brains. Took a short-cut to success and is in chains. Says Terry, Counterfeit money gives me a thrill; All 1 did was goof on a five dollar bill. Riding bulls and barrel racing, Ron’s the rodeo king with 1 placing. The girls all faint when he walks by. His ten gallon hat makes him seem so high. In swings Janet a talented little star. As you all know, she has gone far. She is a star in Trigger and Betty. But her six kids keep her jumping and ready. Here comes Sharen from that big school. She was followed every golden rule. She now teaches with a Masters Degree, And her husband is as happy as he can be. A grizzly fighter is what Tad will be. Chasing big bears clear up a tree. He soon will perform on the Walt Disney Show, Where he’ll line up the bears all in a row. Kevin Miller, with his love for a beverage, Has landed a job, and has he got leverage! When we hear his deep voice, we all want to cheer. He sings T.V. commercials for Blue Ribbon beer. Linda Fleeman is cheerful and gay. For she’s awaiting her wedding day. She and Dana are soon to be married. Across the threshold she soon will be carried. Up ahead of us is a guy we all know. Why it’s Kennv, the well-known wrestling pro. He's won the Olympics — not once, but twice. And he still finds time for, Lu, his wife. There’s a new building on Clarks main street. Bob's new business is really a treat. A chief that can really do his thing. Why not try Bob’s Burger King? Dawn Van Pelt (or should we say Wanda?) Is known for crazy stunts on her super honda. We never can catch her for she’s always on the go, Taking pictures of the people we all know. Kris Boroviak, so quiet and nice. Moved to ranch country and got a nice slice. She married a cowboy with plenty of land. They ride into the sunset hand in hand. Pete Upton is now a bartender in Worms, He’d love to kiss you and give you his germs. His customers know him as Percy” and Pup , If your spirits are low, he'll boost them up. Well '78 has long been past. But to their memories they’ve held fast. Here’s hoping they'll often get together. On any occasion forever and ever. 5 Graduating Class of '78 Class Flower: Red Rose Class Colors: Red and Blue Class Motto: I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday, and I love today. ” Tim Beck: Class Play 3; Grad. What does a teacher do special to make her remain forever in the minds of many students? It takes a very special quality — and Marie Banks had this quality. We feel that Mrs. Banks believed that all the students she had could accomplish whatever we put our minds to. To us, Mrs. Banks cared about everyone. She was always “lending a hand and also “lending her heart whenever it became nec essary. All of her feelings for her students were more than just teacher-student feelings; they were loving and caring feelings. Mrs. Banks lived for those last days of school and being with her students. All the things she did to make our days a little brighter were brought out from her heart as a friend. She was one of the sweetest friends, yet a strong-willed teacher, who believed in getting things done and getting them done right. She was the kind of a person who believed in saying what she felt or thought about someone. Sometimes this was not what we wanted to hear, but it was for our own good. Most of the time she gave herself to better us as a group, but mostly to better ourselves as individuals. Mrs. Banks left many imprints on all of us. They are with us forever, to worship and use to our best of knowledge. On March 9, 1978, Mrs. Banks died at the age of sixty-four years old. She was our com- mercial teacher in Clarks for thirteen years. For some of us, the halls will still echo the friendly words she would say to us every morn- ing Hi, how you doin', hon?” We Love You. 33 Teachers have Mr. Barbour is our Guidance Counselor. He also coached girls' basketball. He even found time to teach Sociology to his eager Seniors. Mrs. Barbour helps the elementary students to be even better readers. She teaches Rocket Reading. Mr. Lukas is very music minded. He spends his time teaching music and directing our Band and our Vocal groups. Mr Manstedt is always proud of his wrestling team, but besides building winners, he teaches Biology, Math I, P.E., Health and elementary science. Mrs. Vyhlidal has always been known for her great interest in her students. Among teach- ing us many things about life, her speciality in school is English. She always gives her 100% in Speech, Spanish and annual classes. Mr. Steinhoff is known far and near for his wonderful wit. He added a lot of life to his classes, which were Vocational — Ag, I, II, III, IV. He also devoted a lot of time to F.F.A. and did a fine job assistant coaching football. Mr. Bell has taught all of his students much about history. His patience with his students will always be appreciated greatly. 34 Feelings Too!! Mrs. Lukas has been very busy with her family this year. One of her great loves (besides her husband} is music. She takes great patience in teaching elementary music. Mr. Hauschild keeps very fit everyday teaching others how to keep fit in his P.E. classes. While he does love coaching football and track, related arts and industrial arts also keep him busy. Miss Arrants tries to keep in step with all of her students. Besides being sponsor of Yell Gub and F.H.A., she keeps her students busy learning in her home ec classes. Mrs. Cook is best known for her talents for teaching English. She taught us many things besides English. Being librarian keeps her busy also. Mr. Kreps is a friend to all. He enjoys kids and teaching them things. He’s taught many important things in Business law and science. Mrs. Banks. Her name itself makes a statement. Anyone who was lucky enough to know her, loved her. She became a very dear friend to all who needed her. Mrs. Banks may not be in school everday anymore, but her memories will last with all for an eternity. — Good bye, we love you . . . Mr. Att is a wonderfully patient person. He always has time to help a student who doesn't understand. He’s not only busy teaching math, but he coaches basketball also. 35 Makin ’ It Work The past year was a very busy one, and without the help of these people, we probably would not have accomplished all the things we did. These people keep the school clean, they feed us, they get us to and from school, and they keep this school organized. They are the ones who make it work. 37 Football. . . Go Big Blue! We started the year off by attending the district convention held at Saint Edward. Our next project was to sell Christmas kits to help finance our year. Our project for the year was to bake cookies, cakes, and can- dies to give to the shut — in citi- zens around Clarks and to the Bathezda Nursing Home. Our next major event was the election of the 78-79 officers. The top four officers attended the state convention held in Lin- coln. Future Farmers of America The first year of FFA sped by for everyone, but not without many contests and awards. The officers went to the national convention in Kansas City in November. Many of our teams qualified for the state con- vention in Lincoln. District con- tests were held at Albion (land judging), Grand Island (livestock judging), Aurora (speaking con- tests), Hastings (livestock and plant contest, wiring, manage- ment, foods, meat identification, tractor maintenance, and many others.) Our team did very well at all of these. Other activities we took part in were a slave sale, monthly meet- ings, and livestock judging. It was a very rewarding year, and our hats are off to Mr. Steinhoff. BACK ROW LEFT-RIGHT: Kevin Miller, Terry Lippstreu, Ron Richards, Kurt Kuhn, Allan Jef- ferson, Peter Upton, Rex Kuhn. Student Council The Student Council consists of volunteer members to repre- sent the student body. This year the S.C. sold Bomber jackets to encourage school enthusiasm. This sale went very well. Also, we rented a juke box for entertain- ment during lunch hour. This was another idea for supporting school enthusiasm for students. The Student Council took over the March of Dimes project this year. It was very successful. Our annual end of the year hot dog roast was enjoyed by all. This year has been very active, involving the help of everyone. rrC” Club The “C” Club has taken on the responsibility of raising money to pay for our new weight machine. We have had the con- cessions for football, basketball and wrestling. In March, we sponsored the C-Club Freestyle Wrestling Tourn. for boys age 8 15. We had 212 participants and are looking forward to next year. Many new ideas and styles have been used. Putting together an annual is a lot of work, but see- ing the finished project makes the hours well worth the effort. We have appreciated the sup- port given us by our advertisers. An annual would not exist with- out them. We also thank our Bomber Boosters” for support- ing us. Next year, the staff and ideas will be different, but the desire to put out an even better” annual will be there. “GOOD LUCK. Paper Staff The Paper Staff has been very busy during the year of 1977- 78. We put together four edi- tions. With Mrs. Banks as our business teacher, we always kept our hands moving. That was something Mrs. Banks always saw to. We chose four editors at the beginning of the year. The edi- tors were chosen by the paper staff members themselves. Edi- tors were Lu Engel, Dawn Van Pelt, Pam Swedenburg, Jolene Wurtz. After Mrs. Banks left us, Mr. Wreidt came to take her place. He’s made many changes in our business department. He has been a big help in helping us to continue on. Over all, we've had a very cooperative staff, and we wish good luck to the upcoming staff in the future. It seems as if we were just walking through those front doors saying, Hi, to all our friends we had not seen all summer, but now we are going to say, Good bye, and walk back through those doors leaving our friends behind. For many, it will be for only a few months; but for the senior class, they are leaving to try their luck in this big world. For them, it is only a beginning, a new start, a new experience. Where will it lead them? On the foruteenth of May, they will all gather together to receive a piece of paper; a paper which says, Now you are ready. You are on your own. Where will you go? Each of you will go your own way apd become your own person. Each will try your own luck in the world. You have each played an important part in each others lives, but you know something? You have played an important part of my life and that of many others. What would we have done without Marilyn’s jokes, Lu's advice, Kevin and Tom's goofing off, and all the rest of the seniors help? You have shown us leadership, togetherness, patience, and love. You have left a mark on all of us. So don’t forget us, because we could never forget you. We know you each have a dream, and we hope you don't stop until you have reached your dream or at least tried. Good luck, and may each of you reach success. Don’t forget CHS and all the friends you are leav- ing behind. Good luck, and we hope to see all of you again soon. Jolene Wurtz Assistant Editor Mixed Feelings Now That It s Over May 14, 1978, at 7:30, the Senior Class of 1978 began their last walk through this school. Our march was led by our mar- shalls; Kim Reaman and Joey Lamb. We walked up to the same old familiar song of Pomp and Circumstances. The benediction was given by Rev. Paul Johnson to proceed with our graduation. The mixed chorus sang a song to keep our very nervous and excited thoughts calmed down a little. Dawn Van Pelt gave the Salutatorian speech and Kurt Kuhn gave the Valedictorian speech. Father Joseph Kaup gave the address to give us a little advice on our future. The big moment of receiving our diplomas had come and now is gone forever. Graduates oj 1978! TOP HONORS: Kurt Kuhn and Dawn Van Pelt ON OUR WAY!! 63 I shall miss you , friend.
