Ex Libris Make way for us; here we come. We're the future America’s young. Don’t criticize or mock our youth; Just like you, we search for truth. Hypocrisies won’t get us down; We will strike where these abound. There’s much to do; we’re needed here. To help preserve what men hold dear. We’ll work with others hand-in-hand, To try to help our fellow man. In this land our fathers made, We stand together unafraid. Give us room; let us by. The youth of America have arrived. There’s nothing wrong that we can’t fix; We’re the spirit of’76! Jean B. Smith As reprinted front September 1975 ’TEEN 1 The “Spirit of ’76” is in everyone’s heart this year. Especially the Seniors, for it is their last year of high school. The birth of a new nation began in 1776 with George Washington as the leader. Many changes were made to try to make things better for the people. The United States started out small, but with progress and co- operation, it has expanded into fifty states. A class was born in 1963 when a group of children started school. With the help and leadership of many people, these children grew and each developed his own ideals. Now, in 1976, this class has been through many fun times and hardships. The Seniors have been doing every- thing possible to get ready for graduation on May 9. This event will end thirteen years of hard work and create a new beginning for a life of their own. On behalf of the Senior class, 1 would like to thank everyone that was involved in making this “Spirit of ’76” annual a success. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Vyhlidal, our sponsor. President: Craig Swedenburg Vice-President: Mike Schlondorf Sec.-Treasurer: Jim Wilson Sponsors: Mrs. Banks Mr. Alt 11 These pictures show our years of kindergarten, third grade, sixth grade, seventh grade, and eighth grade graduation. 12 13 On September, 1963, thirty-one eager little patriots started their long fight for freedom and independence. They were Mike Schlondorf, Jim Wilson, Rick Ferguson, Brad Kohl, Tim Bittinger, Mike Beck, Cecelia Beck, Julie Wurtz Van Pelt, Robin Dexter, Mike Herman, Barbara Beck, Casey Earl, Roberta Harris, Leanne McLean, Dave Huston, Ronnie Kula, Doug Colby, Craig Swedenburg, Tony Peterson, Paul Jaracke, Jane Hansher, Ken Adkisson, Bill Kohlhof, Anne Shonsey, Ann Kuhn, Rebecca Huebner, Sylvia McNeal, Peggy Vincent, Ruby Earl, Cindy Hays, and Gwen Johnson. Under the leadership of Mrs. Kivctt, we learned how to write our names and how to count. After learning these things and more, we felt we were ready to start our fight and on May, 1964, we left for the first year of our battle. Here we had a new leader, Mrs. Baird, and also gained a new recruit to help us along the way. He was Tom Burgess Dittmer. In the second year our leader was Mrs. Moore. We gained two new recruits, Christi Husmann and Ronnie Jones, but the long fight proved too hard for Brad Kohl and Ruby Earl who left us. This year the patriots learned to build bird- houses. In our third year our leader was Mrs. Zlomke. In this year we suffered two more losses, Casey Earl and Ken Adkisson. In our fourth year our numbers dwindled as we lost Tony Peterson and Ric Ferguson. Our leader for that year was Miss McCarty. Our leader for the fifth year was Miss Zoucha and again our numbers dwindled as we lost Barbara and Cecelia Beck. But we did gain one new recruit, Paulette Robak. Miss Test was our leader for our sixth year. We lost Ronnie Kula that year, but gained Glenda Nepermann Lanik. In the seventh year of our long struggle, Mr. Owston was our leader. We had three new recruits this year, Dave Church, Tom Engel, and Roger Yrkoski. We elected class officers for the first time. Our president was Glenda Neper- mann Lanik, vice-president was Paulette Robak, secretary-treasurer was Ronnie Jones, and our Student Council member was Paul Jarecke. Our leader suffered from battle fatigue and had to leave us. In the eighth year of our struggle our elected officers were president, Ron Jones; vice-president, Leanne McLean; secretary-treasurer, Craig Swedenburg; and our Student Council member was Paul Jarecke. Our leader was Mr. Barr. We won a major victory on May 22, 1972, by graduating from the eighth grade. We celebrated the day after by going to Lincoln. We visited the KOLN-KGIN TV station and were on the Morning Show. Also, we visited the telephone company, one of the banks there, and went shopping at Gateway. We gained two new recruits that year, Jerry Palu and Diana Church. We lost Glenda Nepermann Lanik. In our ninth year we had two leaders, Mrs. Ippensen and Mr. Krause. We lost Jerry Palu, Ronnie Jones, and Paulette Robak that year, but gained Brain Botts. We picked our class motto, “We can think about forever, but we really only live today.” Our class flower was a spring bouquet and our class colors were olive-green and gold. Our elected officers were president, Paul Jaracke; vice-president, Roberta Harris; secretary-treasurer, Dave Huston; and our Student Council members were Leanne McLean and Craig Swedenburg. We took a short leave during this year and went to visit the House of Yesterday and the planetarium at Hastings. In the tenth year our casualities were Roberta Harris, Rebecca Huebner, Diana Church, and Brain Botts. Our elected officers were president, Craig Swedenburg; vice-president, Mike Schlondorf; secretary-treasurer, Peg Vincent; and our Student Council members were Mike Herman and Julie Wurtz Van Pelt. Our leaders for that year were Mrs. Ippensen and Mr. Anderson. We ordered our class rings during our sophomore year. In the eleventh year of our struggle we knew that the end was near. Our elected officers were Peggy Vincent, presi- dnet; Tim Bittinger, vice-president; Paul Jaracke, secretary-treasurer; and the Student Council members were Ann Kuhn and Craig Swedenburg. Our leaders were Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Jarecke. We were sorry to lose Sylvia McNeal that year. We honored the seniors with a prom at Havens Ballroom. Our these was “Stairway to Heaven”. In the 12th and final year of our struggle for freedom, we gained Sandy Blowey, which made our number 25. Our elected officers were president, Craig Swedenburg; vice-president, Mike Schlondorf; secretary-treasurer, Jim Wilson; and the Student Council members were Leanne McLean and Tim Bittinger. Our leaders were Mr. Alt and Mrs. Banks. The Junior class honored us with a Junior-Senior prom at the school gym called “The Spirit of ’76”. We finally won our battle of independence and freedom on May 9, 1976, as we graduated from Clarks High School. 14 Roger Yrkoski had quite a great smile. For a young girl down the mile. They married and now live on a farm, And he tutors Polish at night in the barn. Leanne McLean loved her horses so, That soon she had her very own rodeo. She then fell in love with a husky ranch hand. And they ride every sunset with a serenading band. To go out ot wrestle gators in the swamp. This is the way Dave likes to romp. He still says marriage is not for him. He sleeps in the tavern, if not in the gym. Cindy, as you know, was not very tall. But as valedictorian she was right on the ball. She married a banker, we must confess. And is happy and contented, as you might guess. To be a trucker was Tom Dittmer’s plan. Soon his red van was seen all over the land. He’s retired now and lives on the farm. He raises turkeys and keeps them from harm. Robin Dexter made quite a fine nurse, And had lots of money to fill her purse. She’s still just as sweet as a body can be. Her husband and son fill her life with glee. Mike Herman has the best farm in the land. The farmers near and far know his brand. His corn and beans grow very tall, And we hear his wallet is thick in the fall. Julie Van Pelt, was the sweet mother we all knew. We all hear now she has quite a crew. She and Daryl have quite a large farm. And she’s busy keeping her family from harm. Paul and Dave H. were both animal fans. They studied in Florida and got great tans. Let Dave take care of all your little pets. And to the farmers, Paul’s their best bet. Jane Hansher, her red hair now gray. Wouldn’t let any fun get by her way. She now manages “Worlds of Fun,” And her seven kids help her to get things done. To Wyoming went our cowboy, Mike Beck. He bought a ranch bigger than heck. He rides over mountains and open plain, And watches all day for a rare whooping crane. Sandy Blowey soon went to Idaho. Why she went, we all do not know. She married a potato farmer with lots of land. And she peels spuds, thinking it’s grand. Tim Bittinger decided to go into his father’s trade, He worked many days laying wire with a spade. He now is married and has the big house on the hill, And says of night life he’s had his fill. Gwen gives shaves and haircuts all day, But she doesn’t let work get in her way. While she works on the men to make them look nice. Most of them ask her out more than twice. Mike Schlondorf was always so quiet in school. Soon, he became manager of the Clarks swimming pool. He married a nice girl from a nice little town. Mike’s always smiling when she’s around. Nursing sent Ann Kuhn in a tizzy, Till she married a farmer and became quite busy. She has 10 kids running around all the time. Could it be her blood pressure is starting to climb? Craig Swedenburg was right on top in school. Famous for being able to “keep his cool.” People now all call him “Big Honest Swede.” With him in the White House, what more do we need? Peggy Vincent with that cute red hair, Went through business school with quite a flair. She now is president of a bank in L.A., And we’re certain now that she’ll go all the way. To be a farm agent was Jim Wilson’s goal. At the UN, he was on the honor roll. He shows all the latest ideas to the farmers around. Just see how their crops are growing abound. Curlers and hairpins are Anne’s profession. She gets S20 for each beauty session. She works on hairstyles for movie stars. She has a handsome chauffeur for all her cars. Bill Kolhoff soon went off to the service. But it’s not the guns that make him nervous. It’s that big, old sergeant that yells all the time. Bill relieves his tension by drinking wine. Christi Husmann found her career. With a handsome boss who thinks she’s a dear. When he dictates, she sits on his lap. When he gets fresh, she gives him a slap. Doug Colby was quite a man around town, But soon his girl was in a wedding gown. He now cooks, and sews, and sits with the kids, And on his only night out, he hunts canning lids. Tom Engel, the guy with that great passing arm, Soon found out he didn’t like being on the farm. He became a coach of a very great team. And he deflates footballs to let off steam. 16 or m: (. It doesn’t seem possible, but the school year is over and summer has arrived. It was a great year, filled with good times and wonderful ex- periences. However, all good things must pass and so we say farewell to another year. To the seniors, farewell means many things. This is their last good-bye to Clarks High. They leave with more than knowledge, however. They also take with them memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. They are saying farewell to one adventure and greeting a whole new one. Farewell brings a sigh of relief from the juniors. Prom and their money-making projects seem like yesterday to them, but now it’s over. They are beginning to look into the future and trying to see what tomorrow brings. This year was one of excitement and new experiences for the sophomores. Adventures ranged from dissecting pigs to getting their drivers licenses. To the freshman, this year seemed to fly in a few short days. Typing contracts, rocket shooting, and boy chasing all blended into one happy year. We must now close this chapter in our lives. We will always remember this year in our hearts as well as in our minds. We say a fond good-bye to the seniors and then turn looking to see what the new day will bring us.
