Lettermen preserve TRADITION Receiving a letter in a varsity sport made an athlete eligible for membership in the Lcttermen's Club. Although female athletes were eligible, none chose to join. The group increased its activities this year with antics including dressing up in togas as part of initiation and participating in assemblies. Mr. John Nelson, the club’s new advisor, also sought to establish the sense of honor traditionally associated with membership in this type of group. Weekly practices added to the knowledge of each team member and helper to improve the recall of the players. Team captain Max Hillier. Laura Gilman, Lisa LePome. Karen Fagan, Rebecca Miller, and James Steffen all provided support for a successful year. Coordinating the practices this year was Ms. Denice Mitchell, who also coached the group. Games with other teams from the Clark County School District took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, usually at one of the schools. Hiking Club tackles MOUNTAINS (flinging to steep rocks, carrying everything in a pack, and huddling around a small propane stove or campfire provided many of the experiences encountered by the Hiking Club. Supervised by Mr. John Harrington, the group spent many a weekend a month hiking in varied locations throughout the Las Vegas area. Many hikes were one-day excursions to mountain areas, hot springs, and waterfalls. The group enjoyed several overnight outings to Zion National Park, Death Valley National Monument, and the Grand Canyon. Usually, about fourteen students participated on each hike.
