Award competitions determine excellence among CHS students M any Clark students received awards and honors for their efforts in scholastic and extracurricular activities. School competitions determined the finalists for awards such as Century III, Soroptimist, Voice of Democracy, Gemco Scholarship, NMSQT, and D.A.R. Good Citizen Award. Although application processes varied, students usually completed detailed resumes concerning school activities, previous awards, and personal goals. A faculty scholarship committee determined the winners. Susan Frank was named the school winner in the Soroptimist Citizenship Award. She also was one of three National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalists from Clark. National Merit Scholars are determined by their scores on the PSAT exam. Robyn Shepard also qualified as a National Merit Semi-finalist for her superior scores on last year's PSAT. Merit Scholars represent the top one-half of one percent of all juniors who took the test. Lisa LePomc, also a National Merit Semi-finalist, was one of two representatives in the Gemco Scholarship. Gemco Scholarship finalists were selected from their oral responses to an economics question in front of the scholarship committee. Darrin Bovia, a sophomore, was the recipient of the Hugh O’Brian Award for his leadership abilities. This Award allowed him to participate in a seminar with the other winners throughout Nevada. Karen Fagan was the school winner in the Century III Leadership Award and was named one of nine semi-finalists from Nevada; she finished as State Alternate. She was also the school representative in the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award Contest and the Voice of Democracy Speech Contest. Karen was also selected as one of two school representatives in the Gemco Scholarship Competition. Awards for these competitions varied, depending upon the final status reached by the applicants. However, even the designation of school winner made them scholastic VIP's at Clark. Honors 57
