Studying the United States Government in class and then seeing it in action in Washington D.C. was the primary goal of the eleven Clark students who traveled to the nation's capital in November as part of the Close-Up Program. Mr. Ken Hildebrand, a Clark government teacher, chaperoned the group. The five-day seminars included visits to the Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Vietnam Memorial. Workshops included speakers and discussion sessions on political parties, the media, and lobbyists. The group also visited with Senators Paul Laxalt and Chic Hecht and Congressmen Harry Reid and Barbara Vucanovich. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Virginia, were also points of interest visited by the group. To meet the $780-per-pcrson cost, Close-Up participants held a few fundraisers and solicited sponsorship contributions from businessmen: however, the individual families assumed most of the expenses. 54 Close-Up
Robertson. Seminars for youths encourage exchanges of differing opinions T he Sun Youth Forum, held every year for high school students, allowed 49 students from each high school to participate in information-oriented seminars. Topics included School Daze. Good Ole U.S.A., Teens arc People, and The World. At the completion of the Forum, students in each discussion group elected a finalist to summarize their views in the Las Vegas Sun or on KLAS-TV. Tw-o Clark students. Paige Zielinski and Sharon Robertson, were selected as summarists; Paige and Sharon both appeared on television to summarize their discussion groups. Anytown Nevada, held for the first time during the summer of 1983 in Lee Canyon, emphasized social exchanges between all young people. Three people from Clark — Stephanie Fujii, Tammy Willis, and Darryl Hensley — all attended the seminar sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
