Studying the United States Government in class and then seeing it in action in Washington D.C. was the primary goal of the eleven Clark students who traveled to the nation's capital in November as part of the Close-Up Program. Mr. Ken Hildebrand, a Clark government teacher, chaperoned the group. The five-day seminars included visits to the Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Vietnam Memorial. Workshops included speakers and discussion sessions on political parties, the media, and lobbyists. The group also visited with Senators Paul Laxalt and Chic Hecht and Congressmen Harry Reid and Barbara Vucanovich. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Virginia, were also points of interest visited by the group. To meet the $780-per-pcrson cost, Close-Up participants held a few fundraisers and solicited sponsorship contributions from businessmen: however, the individual families assumed most of the expenses. 54 Close-Up
