Schumann assumes head coaching duties for men’s wrestling The Charger varsity wrestling team had a very difficult season. Their youth and inexperience, inconsistent participation, and many forfeits were the major cause of their defeats. A new coach, Mr. Roger Schumann, took over the head coaching duties for both the varsity and JV teams. He felt that his team, in spite of their losses, gained the much-needed experience and fundamental skills that will help next year's team. Coach Schumann considered them an “intelligent, motivated, and hard working” squad. “If it were not for the forfeits, we would have had a much better season,” Coach Schumann commented. The wrestlers posted some strong individual victories, particularly at lower weight levels. Notable performances at the Christmas holiday tournament came from Jeff Burns (126), Nick Bell (Heavyweight). Doug Manderscheid (138). Ernie Alegre (105), and Roger Schumann (112). In the December tournament in Reno, with a field of 32 teams, Eddie Cclso (155) took fourth place, and Nate Williams (98) took second. In the Basic Invitational, John Gargonne (114) nabbed second place and Nick Bell came in third. The team itself consisted mainly of juniors who will be returning next year. Only three seniors will be leaving: Nate Williams, Isaac Hcarnc. and Eddie Cclso. 158 Varsity Wrestling

JV soccer develops new team for future Voung, a term always applicable to JV teams, was the only accurate description of this year’s JV soccer squad. Fifteen out of the twenty-two players were freshmen. Coach Lee McNally entered the Clark athletic picture this year, filling the position left vacant by Coach Pat Webb when he moved into the varsity program. McNally had coached at Rancho during the 1982-83 season. Freshman Mike Madrid led the team with a consistently high scoring average. Another freshman. Patrick Tarpley, made use of his excellent skills throughout every game. The team began slowly with few wins but confidence and improved skills helped assure victories later. Freshman Trung Dinh had the greatest amount of improvement through the season, according to Coach McNally. Academic ineligibility cost the team its best qualified goalie, a weakness which McNally felt all season. The team that posed as the strongest opponents were Bishop Gorman and Bonanza.
