Ward Nordin. who placed second at zone, sprints the final distance to win at home. Cross country team has good final record Unlike in the past, this year’s cross country team fielded enough people to have a successful season. Led by senior transfer Ward Nordin. the boys’ team had a record of 6-3; the only losses coming by Basic, Eldorado and a close 27-28 loss to zone champion Valley. The team then upset Valley to win the Sunset title. Then, the following week. Valley High School won the zone title, but the Chargers finished second behind Nordin’s second-place finish, Monic Perry’s eighth-place finish and sophomore Joey Neuman’s tenth-place finish to earn a berth in state. At state, Neuman had an excellent day. finishing fourteenth. Coach Doug Clarke is hopeful for next year’s team as only two seniors will be graduating. For the girls, it was all Jamie Bisplinghoff. The senior defended her zone title running an 18:57. At state. Bisplinghoff ran a 19:35 to capture the title. 22 seconds faster than the second place girl. Under the direction of Coach Doug Garner, the girls had an extremely good year. Besides Bisplinghoff, Niki Ushijima and Lori Clarke had an excellent year. The girls’ team took a fifth-place finish in zone. Strong, experienced runners led the team and a return of most of the squad should benefit next year’s group. 138 Crosscountry

MenN varsity cagers have rebuilding year, win Nogales tourney Experience. Every team wants it; few teams have it. According to Head Coach Gary Wheeler, it was the lack of experience that cost his team this year. In his seventh year as head coach, Wheeler lost seven players to graduation last year. Faced with a brand new team. Wheeler had a positive attitude, commenting “They came a long way.” Wheeler also stated that the team's main objective was a berth in the state tournament. “In basketball you arc never out of it. In football you lose two or three games and you arc out of it, but in basketball you always have a shot.” he explained. The pre-scasori held much promise for the team with its twelve non-league games. It looked as though the team would have an easy season as Clark literally smashed Rancho in both teams’ opener. 56-35. Then after taking early leads against Western, the team lost a close game to the Warriors 72-74. The team then faced a determined Eldorado squad. Scoring spurts by the Sundevils helped them to an easy 59-70 win over the Chargers. Defense shone as Clark defeated Basic; the victory raised the Chargers to 2-2 while Basic was winless. Strong offensive and defensive efforts by Las Vegas High helped them to a victory over the Clark cagcrs. December brought holiday tournament time. Though the Chargers were not in the prestigious Prep Holiday Classic at U.N.L.V., they entered two tournaments, the First being the Eldorado Sundcvil Classic. The Chargers' lack of intensity cost them as they fell prey to Cedar City and Crescent Valley; the team did manage to salvage a win over Basic, raising the overall record to 3-5. The team then traveled to California to participate in the Nogales tournament. Tight defense highlighted the Chargers' play, helping them to capture the tourney title. It started by Clark disposing of South Pasadena 41-38. Offense shone in the Chargers' second round game, as they easily defeated Azusa 72-34. In the semifinal game. Clark faced local crosstown rival Eldorado. A tight defensive battle found Clark slipping by the Sundevils, 51-49. The championship game pitted Clark against LaSerne of California. A close game found the Chargers capturing the title in a 62-59 victory. Marvin Langford was named the tournaments’-Most Valuable Player. A 7-5 pre-season record led Clark into tough divisional play. Teams like Valley and Chaparral hurt Clark's chances for a divisional title. 140 Boys Varsity Basketball
