Varsity Coach Kelly sprouts future talent; Burnley paces squad Alter a slow start, the determination of the girls' volleyball team came through and they once again became a major factor in Las Vegas volleyball. The girls captured their fifth straight division title and a final fourth place in state. The year started off with a fourth place finish in the Las Vegas Invitational, which featured top teams. The next Tuesday found the Lady Chargers in league action, this time against Eldorado. A hard-fought match found the Chargers on the short end for a 0-1 league record. The team then battled inconsistency and inexperience (they started only two seniors and were playing .500 ball) throughout the first half of the season. The turning point of the season was the first time Clark played Basic. Ironically, they lost: but from that point on they went 8-2 to finish 12-6 in their division and capture the title, giving the Lady Chargers an automatic berth in state. Kelly commented, I knew we had a good chance at the division title. I would have have been more disappointed not to win it (Sunset Division) than surprised to win it.” Senior captain Pam Burnley also added, At the beginning of the season I didn't think we would go to state, but we worked hard in lots of long practices and finally everything came together. Zone was a week later and the Chargers had a semi-final berth and a second place rating in zone. Clark defeated I.as Vegas High in their first match to put them in the finals against number-one seed Rancho. A long, hard-fought match found Rancho on top, thus giving Clark the Souths number two seed in state. State was the next week, and Clark went against Wooster. After a slow start the spikers came on strong to win a three-set match 13-15. 15-6, 15-8. and advance to a match against Douglas. Passing problems and nine missed serves by Clark helped the Tigers to a narrow 15-13. 16-14 victory, dropping Clark into the losers bracket. The next day Clark faced Hug High. They played strong from start to finish with the most blocks in one match all season, soundly defeating the Hawks 15-10. 15-8. In the fourth place match Clark faced always tough Chaparral. Fatigue finally overcame the Chargers as they dropped a long three set match 7-15, 17-15, 9-15, to finish a strong fourth in state. 132 Girls’Volleyball
