Outstanding individual efforts paced Clark to a duel meet record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The Penguins also made a good account of themselves as they placed second at the Yakima Invitational in early season, IM4 points behind pace-setting Columbia Basin. Only duel meet losses were to Portland State, the Oregon State Rocks , and the Oregon Frosh. The Penguin's out- classed the University of Portland and all conference foes. At District, Clark rolled up a total of 87 points as they qualified 17 men for the State meet. The Penguins took 10 first places led by jim McAbee's double win in the hurdle events and Terry Ramberg's strong distance running. Wilber Brown topped all high jumpers and Don Huddleson took a blue ribbon in the 440. Other standout performers were Gary Boggs, with a second in the shot and discus, and jerry Cun- ningham who placed second in the javelin. Don Huddleson and Tom Buckner also picked up runnerup spots in the 220 and 440. 136

BA 'EBALL V - ,1l. 4 1 ...v Front row: Capt. Ken Kolb, Al Lehrer, Dave Freeland, Jack Miller, A1 Cooper, Doug Stahl, Jeff McQueeny, Dick Rich ards, John Irvine. Back row: Bob Nehler, Rudy Mallonee, Mick Scott, Ray Warren, Jim Gallagher, Richard Carsons Ken Bays, Terry Hober, Coach Gene Tanselli. The Penguin Baseball Team of 1961 had one of the banner seasons of Clark history. Effective pitching by Ray Warren, Bob Nehler and Ken Bays plus productive hitting brought an undefeated record of 14 wins to Coach Gene Tanselli's squad with 10 games left to complete the season. Early season rain washed out six conference games but didn't hamper Penguin batting eyes as Al Cooper slammed the ball at a .421 clip while Doug Stahl and Al Lehrer hit .389 and .356 respectively. Representative of Clark foes were the Portland State Vikings who bowed twice to the Penguins in two non-conference tilts while leading the Oregon Collegiate Conference by a wide margin. Great overall balance spurred Clark to a double win over a strong Oregon Frosh team at mid-season and then on to three straight wins over the Oregon State Rooks at Corvallis. The Penguins rolled up a total of 28 runs in the three game stint at Oregon State. With four conference games left on the schedule, the Penguins should cop the Southern Division crown and move to Yakima for a best of three series for the Washington State Junior College title. 135 Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Portland State Lower Columbia Lower Columbia Portland State Q12 innj Portland University Olympic Olympic Lower Columbia Lower Columbia Oregon Frosh Oregon Frosh O.S.U.
