BASKETB LL The Clark basketball team of 1960-61 posted a highly respectable record of sixteen wins and ten losses. Head coach, Claude Skeets O'Connell, and assistant, Leo Schneider, directed the Clark forces to victory in the Christmas Tournament at Yakima and then on to a sparkling 10-3 conference record. Clark center Al Thompson was named Most Valuable Player of the Christmas Tourna- ment with games of 18 and 23 points. Wil Brown, Dennis Huston and Turner Tarver were named to the Tournament All- Star Team along with Thompson. In addition to a tough conference schedule the Penguins faced rugged outside competition. Clark faced a strong Oregon .State Rook squad three times, dropping two of the games. The Beavers were led by former high school All-American, 6' 11 Mel Counts. In the sec- ond game good defensive work by Thompson held the sky-scraping Beaver to 19 points and brought a victory to Clark. The Penguin Baseball Team of 1961 had one of the banner seasons of Clark history. Effective pitching by Ray Warren, Bob Nehler and Ken Bays plus productive hitting brought an undefeated record of 14 wins to Coach Gene Tanselli's squad with 10 games left to complete the season. Early season rain washed out six conference games but didn't hamper Penguin batting eyes as Al Cooper slammed the ball at a .421 clip while Doug Stahl and Al Lehrer hit .389 and .356 respectively. Representative of Clark foes were the Portland State Vikings who bowed twice to the Penguins in two non-conference tilts while leading the Oregon Collegiate Conference by a wide margin. Great overall balance spurred Clark to a double win over a strong Oregon Frosh team at mid-season and then on to three straight wins over the Oregon State Rooks at Corvallis. The Penguins rolled up a total of 28 runs in the three game stint at Oregon State. With four conference games left on the schedule, the Penguins should cop the Southern Division crown and move to Yakima for a best of three series for the Washington State Junior College title. 135 Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Clark Portland State Lower Columbia Lower Columbia Portland State Q12 innj Portland University Olympic Olympic Lower Columbia Lower Columbia Oregon Frosh Oregon Frosh O.S.U.
