The change of the cat into the panther reflects our theme this year. Em- phasis on Excellence, Then and Now. Clark College continues to change the domestic cat to the panther. It continues to change students of not much voice to the leaders of the society. It continues to perform wonders everyday. Its founding right after the Emancipation Proclamation as a “School on a Hill,” its motto, “Culture for Service” and its development since 1869 reveals how Clark College has always laid Emphasis on Excellence. Clark College, founded in 1869 by the Freedmen’s Aid Society and named after its first president, Bishop D. W. Clark, has been graduating men and women who have always contributed to the excellence of our society. A four-year, co-educational, liberal arts college, its location in the center of Atlanta, which is the business capital of the South, provides students with services needed to develop both academically and socially. Since 1941, Clark College, a member of Atlanta University Center, continues to be part of the established and growing center. With the leadership of its hard-working 19th president — Dr. Elias Blake and its first woman vice-president, Dr. Gloria Scott, the faculty continues to focus on the objectivity of achieving excellence in their considerations. The year of 1985 brings us the change of curriculum and the costly improve- ment of the Quantitive Skills lab for students’ benefit. We, the students in Clark College not only excel academically, but lay great emphasis on our extracurricular activities. Excellence is achieved and shared with the variety of students who come from various parts of the country and other parts of the globe. The theme of thus yearbook, Emphasis on Excellence, Then and Now reflects our continuous development in various forms. 11 was once written that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
