For two of us. the editor. Linton Harris and the advisorl Mittie Monteith, it represented the tinal chapter in a four-year involvement with the Clark yearbook. We leave it to our successors with trust. joy and confidence that the quality will continue to improve and that the responsibility for its production will remain with interested and committed students. The following poem beautifully expresses our patting sentiments and also indicates the strong feelings and high regard all yearbook staffers held for the yearbook generally and for its preparation and production this year in particular: I have been given a bag of tools, A fermless rock and a book of rules; And I must make. ere life has flown. Morehouse College and Spelman CollegeJ met to sign an his- toric docu me nt. The Contract of Affilia- tion of 1929, to which they affixed their names, signaled the official genesis of one of the most remarkable undertakings in the history of higher education. By 1946. a su rvey report sponsored by the General Ed ucati on Board was able to say of the Atlanta University Center: There are few if any groups of higher educational institutions in the country which have gone as far as these institu- tions in voluntary cooperation. That j udgment remains valid today. In- deed, the ensuing three decades since that report was prepared have been marked by a steady increase in coopera- tive endeavors -aII serving to strengthen the world's largest private consorti um of black higher education. A first-time visitor to the Center in- variably is struck by the phenomenon of six institutions whose boundaries some- times interlock to the extent that he cannot determine where one campus ends and another begins. Over 7,000 students and more than 500 faculty mem- here have access to the many benefits and resou rces of a large university while still enjoying the special advantages of membership in a small college and its attention to the individual. Students freely cross-register for courses and even major in subjects offered at other institutions. It is possible for a Spelman professor to teach at Morehouse College a course in which Clark and Morris Brown College students are enrolled. The grad u- ate school, Atlanta University, from which the Center derives its name. co- ordinates summer school instruction for all the institutions. It and the Inter- denominational Theological Center pro- vide post-baccalau reate training to many of the Center's undergraduate alumni. To walk among the buildings on the more than 204 acres of the member institu- tions. to read their catalogues. to visit with their faculty and students. drawn from around the United States and the world. is to discover the accuracy of the Atlanta University Center's slogan: Strength in Diversity. The Member Institutions The consorti urn approach to higher education that has become the hallmark of the Atlanta University Center has contri buted greatly to its strength. Nonetheless. meaningful achievement is dependent upon the oontributions of all those who link their efforts. Each of the members of the Atlanta University Center brings to the equation particular gifts that ensure the maintenance of a rich ness in variety and opportunity. Each has a proud history of both endurance and history. Coming to life independently in the harsh days following the Civil War, each has since de monstrated not only re markable survival instincts, but also the vision to grow. to pioneer and to contribute to society. Their greatest contribution has been to provide educational opportunity for black men and women and to equip them for lives of leadership and service in the greater community. Historically. they and all other black colleges were founded to fill a terri ble void produoed by genera- tions of deprivation under slavery. Their early offeri ngs. of necessity. were con- centrated in the areas of literacy and rudimentary vocational training. Today, their graduates leave prepared for careers in business and the professions and for further professional or graduate study. They have these options in large measure because other graduates, equally well educated, left these institu- tions to challenge the status quo on in- numerable fronts in order to provide new opportunities for all black Americans. a If higher education has a single. simple meaning. it is opportunity -opportunity torgrowth in knowledge, skills and vision; opportunity for self-realization and fulfill- ment. However, higher education in the Atlanta University Center has always carried an additional message: the responsi bility to use the opportunity one receives to promote equal opportunity for all people. The history of the Atlanta University Center is a history of opportunity: opportunity created and opportunity utilized to create additional opportunity for others. That is the reason for which these institutions were brought into bei ng; that is the reason they con- tinue their work; their purpose and their mission are the reasons for the greatness of the Atlanta University Center. . , a. .
