Henderson, the 18th president of Clark College, died on January 28, 1976, as this volume was being prepared for publication. His death left an enormous gap in the life of Clark College and countless other organizations around the country to which he gave unselfishly of his time and his many talents. It would be difficult to identify any other single individual upon whom so many other individuals and groups depended for leadership, counsel, advice and support. His dreams and visions, coupled with a rare ability to translate them into reality covered: the spectrum of human af- fairs. There seemingly was no issue related to the well-being of his fellow men and women with which he was not concerned. All who knew him have been blessed by his touch w a touch that made eVeryone feel important. We all are the beneficiaries of a great legacy. Now the challenge comes to us in lines from one of Dr. Hen- dersonls favorite hymns: . Facing the rising sun, Of a new day begun, Let us march on till Victory is won. The event was marked by student participation this year. In a celebration of The Bicentennial, students portrayed respected Black heroes. Musical selections and creative dances revolved around the theme: ttSave the Family, Give Life to the Children. President Vivian Henderson crowned Miss Clark, Miss Fredi DeGraffenreidt. On the right, Miss Clark and her attendants are surrounded by the class and fraternity Queens. 1' MISS CLARK 1975-76 Fredi ttMissy DeGraffenreidt, a na- tive of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a senior majoring in Drama. She has been preparing for her profession since age 5. Major honors include: Miss Black Florida, winner e 1972; in 1973 she won the Theater Award in Europe, and in 1974 she was winner of the New York Professional Television Award. Miss Clark created and dedicated the theme, 'Save the Family, Give Life to the Children. Mr. Gregory, 3 dynamic speaker, gave a piercing analysis of the socioeconomic problems facing Ameri- cans, and especially, the Black student. Because of his foresight, he was able to prepare a documentary which depicted the C.I.A., FBI, and other related institutions as saboteurs of traditional American freedoms. He emphasized, the need for students to demand further investigation into the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He stated because of the discrepancies in testimony and distorted facts, 2: complete investigation should be petitioned. He felt actions of this type, would undoubtedly show the decadence, immorality, corruption, and insanity in the American system. Mr. Gregory, also emphasized the urgency for student involvement in politically related activity. He stressed the importance of students becoming actively involved in organizations, via., NAACP, SCLS and others that are responsible for the advancements in civil rights. With adulation, Mr. Gregory stated that the student today, demonstrates a high degree of morality and ability and that major changes in the Ameri- can way of life, rest upon the shoulders of the future leaders of tomorrow. Participation in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration march, he urged, would exhibit the fme character and leadership abilities, inherent in the Black student. The Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. birthday celebration March of 1976, marked a renewed sense of direction and inspiration to the Black students in the Atlanta University Center schools. 217 In a seminar held at Clark the world famous evangelist Rev. WCLK: A STATION WITH A DUAL PURPOSE The dedication of WCLK was another important milestone in the Atlanta black community's achieve- ment of selfexpression. To paraphrase John Russwurm, the pioneer black journalist, WCLK provides black men and women with a medium to speak for themselves. However, while the station is a black voice, it does not address itself only to the black community. WCLK serves as a channel of communication to the entire Atlanta community. WCLK has a dual purpose: as a federally-licensed educational FM radio station. it provides Atlanta with information and entertainment of the highest possible quality; as a component of the mas comw munications program that Clark College operates for the Atlanta University Center, WCLK i5 aim a pro- fessional training facility for young men and women preparing for careers in broadcasting. Since it has no educational license, WCLK has no commercial sponsors. This status permits flexibility in format and content and allows a wide variety of programming that may at times appeai to a relatively small number of listerners. For example, WCLK devotes a significant portion of its broadcasts to coverage of campus and community affairs, jazz, and public service programs aimed at meeting an urban communi- tyas daily needs for specialized information - programming that many non-educutional stations are. unable to provide. As Georgiais first black educational FM station, WCLK welcomes the chance to contribute to the deVerv sity of broadcasting through its unique programming and its preparation of skilled communicators. For over one hundred years Clark College has been known for the special quality of its people. The students at Clark are bright and friendly, and the faculty is concerned about you and your education. Your first impression and probably your last analysis of any college will be of its people. So it is with Clark; and here we have the right kind of people to make the college alive and exciting. The college is operated for the benefit of all qualified students without regard to race, color, creed or national origin. Clark is also an equal opportunity employer and our faculty. and staff reflect integration at its best. Many of Clarkis alumni return each year to the campus and help to financially support the College that aided them on the road to success in their choosen professions. Prominent men and women serve on Clarkis Board of Trustees as well as students and faculty members, and help to guide the policies, programs, and future plans of the College. The choice of a college is one of the most important decisions you will make in life. You should evaluate a collegeis curriculum, complete aca- demic program and its people to see if the college is right for you. We think Clark will pass the tests in every category. For several years, Clark has been increasing the options for students by giving them new career options as well as new responsibilities and freedom to pursue their own subj ects of interest. Clark is special because of its curriculum, students, faculty members, and its location. If you can arrange to visit the campus, you'll see what we mean.
