Clark College is a coedw cational four-ycar under- graduate Methodist College operated for the benefit of all qualified students, with- out regard to creed or race. Clark was among the first in- stitutions established by reli- gious denominations after the Civil War to provide Blacks in the South with for- mal education. Clark Uni- versity, as it was then called in keeping with the custom of the times, was named af- ter Bishop Davis W. Clark, first president of the Freed- men,s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlantis Summcrhill sec- tion. The students, a scant handful, had little or no pre- vious academic lraining. Clark's beginning was en, tirely typical. Nearly every Black university founded in the early post-war years began in much the same way. The type of institution envisaged by the founders however, is reflected in an allmion t0 the iirst instmb tors. who were described as good scholars and success- ful teachers. One early ben- efaclor, Bishop Gilbert Haven, visualized Clark as the school that would set the lone I'm :1 other Mcdludisl educational institutions for Biucks. lllllllllllllih tlllllllllllll E. h. .61, .
