The Panther is so dedicated because the Black Community has been a fountain which has flourished from an early era of poverty and ignorance to a catalyst which has stimulated our belief in self-pride and unity. 2 The Black Communit ' it A type of UNITY exists even in the stillness of the community 1 .Ii ' f 'sllvl And No one walks ALONE. A new day is dawning The star of unity now shines Letting us know .... IT'S NATION TIME An inner voice speaks to us saying togetherness we must find And also telling us .... She said the coronation this year made them fthe queensj look real, like what we are --black queens. The only thing people can develop is an awareness of themselves, she said. The Coronation made me, and I'm sure everybody in, the auditori- um, feel naturally black and beau- tiful. I'm glad we made the switch in the way we honor our queens. It was certainly about time. Second Attendant to Miss Clark College Greta Marable has pulled her mind into her own color and her own being. Like her hair. she's gone through some changes and is becoming natural. I accept black awareness now but some time ago I used to think people were crazy. she said. - And today there is an in- creasing amount of black awareness spreading everywhere. It's beautiful for black people to accept them- selves as they are. The second attendant to Miss Clark says she hopes that when it's time for plans to be made for Clark's fu- ture queenlcoronations, there will be no reverting back to the types of coronations the college has had in past years. I don't think there will be. but if there is, the students who abandoned the traditional white ceremony didn't get their point over. Crete said the point the students were trying to present was that Clark's queens must be put into the spotlight of black culture. Miss Clark College, 1970-71 U . 54 A Conservative minister's daughter's wish Came true the fall of 1970. Ioyce Gaston, a senior, said her wish was to have C1ark's Coronation differ from the ones previously held. Her wish came true when the College held its first Cor- onation of a Black Queen this year. Ioyce said that in the beginning she wasn't sure she wanted the type of Ceremony the Coronation Committee sug- gested. I thought I wanted the traditional queen crowning at first, she explained, but I wanted the Coronation to be different. I had my doubts about the ritual, but I thought about the real meaning it Could present to the students here, and I realized that the ritual was what I wanted. The Ceremony was a way of letting everybody know that students are getting away from tradition, she said. We dispensed with the WASP, lWhite Anglo-Saxon Protestantj, form of Coronation of frills and curls. A few years ago, I don't think I would have participated in a Ceremony like our Coronation, Joyce admitted. At that time I was shy and tended to be afraid of exploring things. I have re-evaluated myself and my values now and feel there is an increasing awareness in black pride developing within myself. Clark's Coronation this year characterizes the Current movement of the 1970's. It's an awareness that's turning us away from the larger society toward each other, Ioyce said. The hopes for a successful campaign in 1970 rested on speed and deception, and these hopes lived only until the middle of the season, for a series of injuries to key players-a broken leg, a fractured ankle, a sprained back, and several other injuries-quickly dissipated team strength. 128 J' -'ll-um. ?S I. Thru many a sweaty practice and drills the Panthers emerged with a burning desire to win. During the season our mistakes cost us and for the first time Clark was battling for a play-off position. Even in defeat the cagers had shown themselves to be true Champions, a proud team not to be soon forgotten . . . Hurley Harris with his 20 points average along with consistently controlling the boards . . . Tony Floyd whose shooting ability kept the team alive . . . Ioesaih Etheridge whose shooting, speed, unbelievable driving and ball-control always left the fans amazed and in an uproar . . . Larry Bell with his rebounding help bring the team down the court and Norris Clemmons whose scrapping defense made him a thorn in the side of all opposition. Finally, without the guidance of Coach Leonidas S. Epps, our team would have been incomplete. nw 135 1 Larry under the boards. The Coach The vital force behind The Panthers is Coach Leonidas Sonny Epps. a very lik- able chap from East St. Louis, Indiana. Epps came to Clark in 1950 and assumed full responsibility for the football, basketball and track teams the following year. The Coach. a graduate of Xavier University, began his coaching career at Gilbert Academy in New Orleans where he headed a consistently winning team. This year Epps. who continues to serve as director of athletics. bowed out as football coach to give one of his pupils, ex-defense Coach Iesse McClardy. the top post. Composed of two representatives from each sorority and fraternity, this governing body settles any difficulties which may arise from rushing or pledging, acts as a forum for discussion of questions of common interest and stimulates interest in improving the total scholarship of the Greek letter organizations and the student body. Mrs. McKenzie lives in Holmes Hall one of the up- perclassman dormitories, She's a person the women in Holmes as well as those in the other dormitories feel they can turn to for valuable aid. Mrs. McKenzie has been an energetic female all her life and still attends many conferences of organizations she's as- sociated with, along with visiting her friends throughout the year. On many nights one will see a taxicab driver taking the old lady to or returning her from the air- port. Mrs. McKenzie, known to most Clarkites as Mama Mac. is a strong willed woman, the type many may call tough. But she is indeed a gentle and lovable woman who unconsciously sets an example to follow. ,n me mi N i gm Xe 1-.R . 'F .f,3 -fa T-' V- fm in X 210 Mama Mac chatting with a student. J-ew 3 ,P RS!! The 1971 Panther has been constructed to give not only a pictorial account of the year's events but also a written one. On the preceding pages we the staff have presented most of the life at Clark-the people associated with the college and the events held during the year. Our theme lt's Nation Time means that the occasion has come for black people to start becoming in- volved with one another. We should stop being unconcerned about what is happening in our society and get involved in it. The 1971 Panther is the product of hard labor performed by very few hands. My deepest appreciation is extended to the staff for their time, energy and true dedication in the production of The Panther. , Sincerely, L fitrisfrtlfo .da ,Jf.f,,,,,,f,.f Mascelia S.
