CENTENNIAL PANTHER . -5-.- FOREWORD This is the year in review and a look or 100 years of progress and service rendered by Clark College. The Panther Staff has striven to compile the material ?har will present a composite picture of the year and reflect on some of the events of yesteryear. And for what purpose? For in a few days personal pictures will be admired, captions will be laughed at. A few pages will be thumbed ihraugh, comments made, and eventually the Paniher will lind itself on the upper shelf, seemingly forgotten. But there will come 0 day when it will be taken from the shell and each page carefully studied. One will read be- tween the lines and hope to find a few of the things that meant so much to him. Centennial years come and go, but who among us will see Clark College reach its next century? The first Incotion was 01' Whitehall and McDaniel Streets. During the first few years, Bishop Gilbert Haven secured a tract of land of between 40R and .500 acres on the south side of the city to which the University was moved in 1372. A large portion of the funds for the founding of the University was contributed by Mrs. Augusta Clark Cole, the daughter of Bishop D. W. Clark, who died in 1872. There have been many weH known edu- cators who have served Clark College in its 100 years of exist- ence. Dr. Wilham Crogmon was The first Negro president To serve the Institution. Dr. Moffhew S. Davuge and Dr. James P. Bruwley are the only surviving presidents who have served The college. ....v -.'4144. -.l- -- ....-.. --.-. I: I L -.-u-u.-u wr- Since the iounding of Clark College, more than 3,000 degrees have been awarded. The first to be awarded was in 1883 and in +he years following Clark graduates become The presidents of Bennef'r, Philander Smith and Morris Brown Colleges. In many ways, the Centenniut Year was no 1 different from other years; students studied, faculty taught and the college life went on as usual. We cannot forget the strong hands of Dr. James P. Bruwtey who has ted Clark for over 40 years. Upon his retirement in 1965, the Clark tamily can say that in The past quarter century, Clark has grown steadtty in size and stature. It Is stilt, nonetheless, engaged in curriculum changes, and the endless search for improvement. This, hopetutly, wili never change. Thanks to Dr. James P. Browley. 'IAI Throughout this Centenntol Annual many spectral activities wiH point out the fact that the century mark has been reached, and is only the beginning ........... Dr. Vivian W. Henderson came to Clerk in the toll of 1965. He Is a dynomtc leader and is the most popular president in the University Center. This year Pres'tdent Henderson wus inaugurated as the 18th president of Clark College. DESK Dear Readers, Fond memories hove Cl way at giving newness to life when practically all things seem dull and unrewurding. This pictorial treasure of Our Centennial Year has been structured with the hope that it will capture very vividly the moments of icy, disappointment, work and long hours that went into the planning and execution of our Centennial Yecrt It is the job of the Annual Stott to present c: pictorial treasure of the year's events, whether they be educational, social, political, or revolutionary. This year's statf had the some job with an added challenge,- the production of o Centennial inaugural Annual. It would be impossible to show the one hundred years of progress and service made by Cr great institution like Clark College on a few pages, but through c tew pictures and captions, we have presented some links of that great chain of events. The program tor the year was so extensive and varied, so many signigicont lhings happened, it was G dilticult task for the staff to select the activities and events which we leit would most accurately represent the Centennial Year. It is my tondest hope that you will find this Centennial Panther c1 publication worth your careful examination and enioyment; end that it will serve as a constant reminder of the days spent at dear old Clark.
