Elephant Cluh Captain Fum- hall Team, '44: All Suulhcrn Baskrlhall Player Class History By Anna M. Rice In September, 1942, the present dignified seniors made their grand entrance into these renowned halls of learning. Of course, being the young dashing geniuses that we were, we eagerly pursued the regular freshman routine of registration and pledged ourselves to give our most honorable upperlclassmen a Hrouncl during lterabrweekfl Our class proved to be very versatile and practically every member associated himself with some campus activity. janet Ross, Genevieve Ferguson, Mildred Belcher, Anna Rice, Myrtis Smith, Alice Hz-irtheldn Marjorie Bryson, Quintella Will son, Charles Warren, Gloria Jackson, Hera man Scott and Walter Mayes made them! selves known through the Philharmonic 80 eiety and the newly organized college band. The perpetual llsun'shine carriers were Frances Fitzgerald, Aquilla Hatley, Loretta Agee and Gloria Jackson. With their sup, port and under the able leadership of our class president, William Thompson, we ended the year with a llbaog, looking for; ward to the next year. Our sophomore year, we played it cool, but found ourselves minus of many class mates. Some dropped out while others went into the armed services of our country. How; ever: new personalities were added in the personages of Thelcla Phillips, Nora Mathis, Benjamin Bradford, George Williamst Vere gie Cornish, Ogust Delaney, Doris James, Evelyn Gibson, Sylvia Quarker, Levivian McDaniel Reginald Haynes, Richard Bol' tom Virginia Cage, Dorothy Reed, and Lev tha Gardner. It was at the end of this year that Genevieve Ferguson was recognized as attaining the highest scholastic achievement during our hi'st two years, and awarded a second scholarship for the continuation of her education. The school year 194443, our junior year proved to be a fruitful one for us. although we were much smaller in number. At Home' coming, the juniors held all the honors ex' cept one. Cynthia Perry was elected ulVIiss Clark? Anna. Rice, her personal attendant, Portia Thomas, Miss Clark's runner up, Virginia Cage, HMise Omegual and Benjamin Bradford, hMl'. Clark. In the ranks of scholastic achievement, Genevieve Ferguson and Anna Rice were elected to Alpha Kappa Mu Honorary So; ciety. Further honor came to out ClELES when unf der the leadership of Billy Thompson, our school publication was changed to the tab' loicl type and with the name LLPanther'l in' stead of HMentor. George Allen showed his colors by CllS' playing a high degree of business ability in the successful operation of the college book! store. New members still came in the persons of Juanita, Brantley, Marie Wallace, Dorothy Wilkins. Bertha CrawforcL Mary Frances Greene, Barbara Robinson and others cast their lots with our now famous Class. Cupid played a leading role in our class that year and claimed the hearts of Virginia Cage, Genevieve Ferguson, Portia Thomas and Eura Lee Grimes in holyr wedlock. We terminated the year with EL beautir ful iStar'Dustll Prom which will long be talked about by all that were present. September. 1945': we returned as seniors, enthusiastically looking fomrarcl only to graduation and departing from these sacred halls of learning. Katherine Frye returned to school and proved her worth beyond a doubt by becom' ing the able and efficient editorainvchief of Continued on Next Page CLASS HISTORY Continued l'mm Last Page the school publication and by displaying her dramatic ability. Also in the area of dra' - matics, Bernice Hankerson, Irene Whitheld, Benjamin Bradford, Juanita Brantley, Katha Brine Frye, and Cynthia Perry were main stays in Ladies in Retirementh Making herself welltknown in the Physics Department, Renette Echols came to US from Bennett. At Homecoming, Ogust Delaney kept honor in the class by being Miss Omega and Eleanor Greenwood was our class queen. Surprisingly enough we found that the flames of love were still burning and the ma mances of Cynthia PerryeTalmadge Owens and Anna Rice'George LChubbyh James had weathered the EstormsH of three long years. had survived and were now embatkr mg upon the fourth year. Not being conceited. but as seniors. we feel that we have contributed much to the betterment of Clark and although the devaSr tating clutches of war deprived us of many things, we have come through with flying colors. As we leave Clark College to take our places in the worch may those to come along remember the class of 146 and strive to con; tinue what we have started. OverHowing with energy, versatility and patience, Mrs. Bland set out to accomplish something never before done in the history of Clark College. Upon her arrival she found a vast amount of raw material among the Clark students. Determined to develop this material to its utmost, Mrs. Bland continued kindling the sparks until they were ready to roar forth into a huge flame of productions. The hrst major production of the department was, uMeet the Husband? a threelact comedy which delighted both members of the college and outside friends. The second major production was, thadies in Retirement, which was equally received by its audi' ence and showed the progress made by the group.
