Dana Still, provost and academic vice president of Clarion University, has retired after 35 years of faithful service. Dr. Still began his education in a one-room, rural school in a farming community in southwestern Ohio. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1934, received his bachelor of science degree in 1938 from Ohio State University, and earned his master of arts degree at Ohio State University after he had accepted his first teaching job. In 1955, he was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Except for a brief period as a technical writer for General Motors ' Delco Division, Dana Still was an educator. He taught illiterate recruits and inmates at the naval prison after joining the Navy in 1944. After two years in the Navy, he returned to Ohio and taught English in the public schools until 1948. Dr. Still came to Clarion in 1948, and served both the Clarion Area Schools and Clarion State Teacher ' s College as a teacher of English. He was appointed chairman of the English Department in 1956, and held the post until 1962, when he was named assistant dean of academic affairs. Dr. Still held various administrative positions between 1962 and his retirement. He was acting dean of academic affairs, 1966-67; acting president, September, 1969 - March, 1970, and he was appointed academic vice president in 1973. Dr. Still was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1971 by the Clarion University Alumni Association. At his retirement recognition dinner held in October t 1983, over 500 people attended to congratulate, thank, and honor him. Dana Still has shared his talents with the community and with our school for the past 35 years. The faculty, staff, and students of Clarion will miss him. His friendly smile, his cheerful hello, his sincere concern for students, and his inspirational remarks, are only a few of the many things that will be long remembered by those he touched.
