' r Q CLARION STATE COLLEGE i j Venango Campus . «i i ' u 76-6591 1801 Wesl First Str.-fl Oil City, Pennsylvania 16301 Dear Student: Education should increase one ' s awareness not only of the hopes and aims of human beings, but also of one ' s awareness of the injustice and intolerance of which they may be victims. With such increased awareness comes increased responsibility. To the question of what constitutes one ' s responsibility, Goethe answered, What the day demands. Antoine de Saint-Exupery has said, A civilization is built on what is required of men, not on that which is provided for them. My wish for you, as students and as graduates, is not that you may have acquired skills alone during your time at Venango Campus; but that you may have broadened your conception of your responsibili- ty — that you may recognize what the day demands of you, and that you may have the imagination, the discipline, the ability, and the courage to perform that duty, however large or small, to your satisfaction. The appropriateness of the combination of awareness and action is conveyed in Ruskin ' s claim that thought can be made healthy only by labor, and that labor can be made happy only by thought. May this felicitous union of healthy thought and happy labor bring you not contentment, but encouragement to continue determining and doing that which you perceive as your responsibility. WINTER SPRING SUMMER When Autumn flings her banners wide upon October air, All nature seems to thank its God for making life so fair. The hills go robed in amethyst, the trees are dressed in fire, The very air seems thrilling with a passionless desire.
