ATHLEtlCS ai The 1972 FOOTBALL SEASON proved to be two minutes too long for the Golden Eagles, as their chance for the Western Penn- sylvania Conference Crown went a glimmering, when the Slippery Rock Rockets scored the winning touchdown with fourteen seconds left to play. The work of a strong defense played an important role throughout the season. In the Homecoming game against Edinboro it was the defense that collared the Scots to give the fighting Eagles a 10-9 triumph. Anchoring the front line was Kirk Johnson, middle guard, and Larry Cirka, team captain. In the secondary, headliners were hard hitting Terry Sullivan, Rick Speese, and Scott Gemberl- ing. Throughout the season Coach Al Jacks used a trio of strong runners lead by Mick Sarnese and good pass receivers. B ut, it was not just the backs and receivers that made Clarion click. There was the stellar offensive line consisting of Conference stars Dan Corbett and Marc Riddell at guard position and Roy Bowerman at center that cracked holes. Add to this the quarterbacking of Joe Marx and Clarion turned in another winning season. Jj isu. ; jf nfj  ' Front Row (1 to r) K. Johnson, D. Gritzer, D. Gritzer, M. Samese, T. Sullivan, J. Marx, M. The mighty Eagles swept to their third consecutive Western Pennsylvania title and third consecutive appearance in the NAIA District 18 playoffs. In ad- dition, the record this season was a glittering 19 wins and 6 losses. This is the most wins in one season for a Clarion roundball team. Individually this season saw Joe Sebestyen and Don Wilson score their 1,000th career point. Sebestyen, who pumped in 421 points this year, ended his career with 1,195 points. Joe owns varsity records for most rebounds in a season and best field goal percentage. As for Wilson, his 1,000th point was a little tough to come by. After hitting on point 998, Donny suffered a small broken bone in his foot. Against Alliance the second time around, he hobbled on court to score his magic number and later added one more for assurance. Senior Elmer Kreiling, tri-captain, helped pace the game for Myers, Ankeney and the rest of his teammates on the hardwood boards through some hard fought victories and losses. Standing: G. As you should know by now, the Clarion matmen surpassed the performance of last season. Instead of two national champs, there are three. Instead of one College Division Cham- pion, there are two and one runner up. The tremendous trio of 1972-73 were the main headliners. That trio consisted of University National Champions Don Rohn, 134 lbs.; Wade Schalles, 158 lbs.; and Bill Elbows Simpson, 167 lbs. Rohn, the power packed freshman became the second freshman to over capture a national wrestling title. Moving to Schalles, Wondrous Wade nailed down his second national title and also w on the College Division crown. Elbows Simpson won his first university title and remained the man to beat in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships. Then there is Coach Bob Bubb. The quiet, soft spoken coach was voted by his peers as the NCAA University Division Coach of the Year. However, the Clarion squad had others beside the headliners who had outstanding performances. Heavyweight Chuch Corea, a freshman, won the Conference title then went on to College Division Runner up. Conference runners up were Craig Turnbull at 118, Tom Hanly at 126, and Bob Gordon at 190. The 1972-73 season was the finest one by far for the wrestling squad at Clarion. Their second consecutive Conference championship, runner up to Cal Poly in the College Division Tournament and three individual national champions have answered the question, Where is Clarion? M,. The Blue Marlins of Coach Karen King went undefeated this past season in their ten meets. Also, one of these ten victories was the upsetting of the East Stroudsburg gals. This task had never been accomplished by the Marlins until this season. In addition to their undefeated season, the Mermaids of Clarion placed third in the Easter Regionals and eighthteenth in the National competition. Individually, Margaret Horning was one of the headliners for Coach Kings ' swimmers. The freshmen powerhouse set six new Blue Marlin swimming records and won three silver medals in the Eastern Regionals. Other girls who shared the limelight with Miss Horning this past season were Anne Morrison and Lee Bernstein. Miss Morrison shattered four records and Miss Bernstein owns five Blue Marlin Standar ds. If there was a low point in the season for the Blue Marlins, it would have to be the broken leg suffered by national diving cham- pion Barb Seel midway through the season. This injury curtailed Miss Seel ' s diving for the season and she was unable to defend her national title. With a host of underclassmen back from this years undefeated squad, it appears that the Blue Marlin swimmers have a dynasty in the making. For the third consecutive year, the GOLDEN EAGLE TANKERS nailed down the Pennsylvania Conference title in men ' s swimming. What is even more dramatic about this feat is that Clarion has had swimming as a varsity sport for only four years. And. in those four years, the Eagle tankers own an amazing record of 44 wins and only .5 defeats! It was this same group of 8 senior swimmers who, as freshman, were on the very first CSC swim team in 1969-70. Highlighting the 1972-7.3 season was the appearance of transfer Larrv- Bushey. Bushey did not become eligible until the second semester and when he did he made a tremendous splash. This season. Bushey won conference titles in the 100 and 200 yard backstrokes. Then moving on to national competi- tion, he attained Ail-American status in both the XAIA and NCAA for his outstanding performances. -Another NAIA and NCAA All-.American is Dave Cochran. Cochran, who also won a pair of conference titles, was an .Ail-American m the 200 yard backstroke. Rounding out the list of All-. mericans for 1972-73 is diver Mark Kuranz. In the NCAA meet. Kuranz earned All- .American status on the one and three meter boards. This trio of Ail-Americans were mainly responsible for the 12th place finish by Clarion in the NAIA meet and the eleventh place in the NCAA College Division meet. The season did not belong just to the All-.Americans. There were the Conference Champions as well. In the Eastern Regionals, where Clarion placed third, Miss Perozzi captured first in the balance beam. By way of her first place finish on the beam at the National Meet over Easter, Cheryl became the fourth National Champion for this year. As for Miss Chapela, her sixth in all-arounds and fourth in vaulting and balance beam in Easterns led to her status of Ail-American. Now, five years later, the women spikers have come along way to their current standing. After starting out their first two years with .500 records the gals of Coach Fran Shope, who is the WIAA athletic director, posted a fine record of 9 wins and 2 losses this season. Also, the gals recorded their fifth straight win- ning season. They now boast of five years with 24 wins and 14 losses for a winning percentage of 63.1 f. Overall the three woman sports compiled an outstanding mark of 30 against only three defeats this year. Highlighting the years ac- tivities, the Huns showed very im- pressive at the Garden City Judo Club Academy tournament. In- dividually, Rich Land took a first in the lightweights and Valerie Mahle garnered the top spot in the senior women ' s heavy weight class. Then, in the Winter Annual Promotional Senior Judo tournament, the team brought home three firsts. Miss Mahle was named the outstanding judoist of the Junior Olympic tour- nament. Besides the match honors, three members moved to the Green Belt status. The Clarion Huns have the talent and tools to compete inter- coUegiately; all they need now is the financial backing. Once this is at- tained, the team will no doubt join the other Clarion sports in the winners circle. Q m F! m V VI i I rr iT f?i First row: W. Miller, M. VanEpes, G. Betz, D. Henning. Second row: D. Coach Galen Ober ' s marksmen had always come close to winning the Western Pennsylvania Rifle League (WPIRL); but they were never successful. Well, this past season saw a change. THE GOLDEN EAGLE RIFLERS were able to overhaul powerful Indiana and win their first WPIRL championship ever! Overhauling defending champion Indiana was the highlight of the illustrious season for the riflers. In the first encounter between the two schools, the eagles bare- ly outshot Indiana 1314- 1306. Then, when the two teams met again, the Eagles sewed up their WPIRL title with 1286-1272 win over the Indians. As far as Clarion Rifle is concerned, they are to the disadvantage in two ways. One determant against the Eagles is the fact that they are not supported by Armv ROTC. All other WPIRL schools except Clarion and Geneva have Army ROTC backing. However, Clarion has Willis Webster. Webster was responsible for the training of hometown boys Wayne Miller, Bob Lalz, Dan Baum and Mike Banner at the Clarion Rifle and Pistol Association. The other factor work- ing against the Eagle marksmen is the lack of spectator appeal for this sport. As a matter of fact, some students at Clarion probably do not even know that Clarion has a rifle team. Even without ROTC aid and spectator support, the unsung Clarion Rifle team proved equal to the task as they won their first WPIRL title. ' ATHLETICS i ' ; en va i;edofTia. Over the past twelve years the Clarion golfers have garnered five conference championships and have been conference runner-ups five other times! So, as the Golden Eagle linksters headed into the 197.3 season, the outlook was bright for another win- ning and successful season on the courses. Under the guidance of Tom Carnahan and Les Oakes. the ' 73 version of the Clarion golfers is experienced and strong. Pacing the Golden Eagle swingers is returning letterman Bill Dudich. Bill captured the gold medal in this season ' s conference round. A pair of twin brothers. Sandy and Joe Tutich are returning letter- man. The fourth letterman returning is Jim McArdle. The next two spots will be held down by freshman. Carnahan has a trio of frosh to choose from. Heading that trio is PIAA high school champ Pat Skinners, with Barry Divins and Dan Corrigan. However, it appears that brighter seasons are just around the corner. The 1973 edition track team has posted a mark of 5 wins. 3 losses, and 1 tie going into the Conference meet. The new young head coach Bill English is the spark to the early success. Coach English is a winner from the word go. The Coach, who was an assistant at Slippery Rock, is not staffed by the college. The young mentor is a teacher at East Forest High School and travels some fifty miles, roundtrip. after school to fullfill his coaching duties. His win- ning efforts has rubbed off on the team, as the record shows. With a fresh coach to go with his young team, a track powerhouse is not to far in the distant running. This past season saw a change occur in the CROSS COUNTRY TEAM. For the first time in the histor - of the young sport here, the harriers posted a winning season with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. Many reasons can be given as to why the runners turned in such a fine performance. The main reason was the arrival of new head coach Bill English, The future for Clarion cross country is bright since the team will have all its 1972 point scores back for the 1973 season. Heading the list of top point scorers was Jerry Burk. Burk posted seven first places this year and was the leader in points with 24 (in cross country the lower the point total the better). 64, ' ATHLETICS Kneeling, Row 1: J. Newkirk, G. Whitely. M. But, as the Golden Eagles head into the season, coach Joe Knowles is confident that this could be the year for the diamondmen. The future is bright and a championship might not be too far off. Looking at the 1973 roster, over seventy- five percent of the team is either freshman or sophomore level. The Eagles usually start three players that are upper classmen. Expected to have another fine season is pitcher Pete Vuckovich. Last year the righthander tossed a no-hitter against In- diana. Experienced third baseman Mike Ford, the guardian of the hot corner, is one of the finest in Clarion history. The third veteran on the team is catcher first baseman Bob Wareham. Bob possesses a strong bat that helps out on offense. :M A JT- i3 — Jyl s- ' % ' FOOTBALL Kirk -Johnson First team NAIA District 18 All-Stars Second team Pa. Conf. Cheerleading, rush, float building, basketball, frat parties, Greek sing, choir, football, sextet, and close friends especially, have all played an individual and important part. FEATURES 201 o I was raised on the Canadian border in Minnesota where the climate and desolate nature of the land first made its impact on my aesthetic and philosophical concepts in regards to con- tempory art such as the piece on this campus. Following three years of study in St. Paul, Minn, at Macalester College I traveled and worked extensively throughout the west, west coast, and Alaska. The end product of these years was an intellectual con- cept which manifested itself in physical work, thinking matters, and the will to build. Following my travels I worked with and or became associated with numerous people across the country who are leaders in contemporary fields of sculpture and architecture. With a B. F. A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and a M. F. A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art this spring I expect to con- tinue to build art and environments for the public. Various other endeavors have included setting up founderies for art schools in Buffalo, studying ceramics at the University of Wisconsin and studying painting with various international painters. It is my sincere hope that this project will leave a stimulating and enhancing contribution to the college as an asset to further man ' s intellectual bounderies. Moore has been Dean of Academic Affairs at Clarion State College since 1946, but this title really says very little about the place he has filled for more than a quarter of a century. Jim Moore has been so many things besides Dean of the College: member of the mathematics faculty, football scout and assistant coach, director of admissions, scheduling officer, who not only made the schedule but largely determined the courses that would be given in every discipline and their sequence, head resident of Davis Hall when it was a dormitory, director of community housing for students living off campus, director of registration, and from time to time acting president of the college. Besides this broad spectrum of all-college administrative duties, he has for many years been the chief certification officer who has finally approved the preparation and signed the applications of teacher education majors seek- ing Commonwealth teaching certification. Yet this inventory of tasks which he has performed so well does not tell what he has done at Clarion . . . surely not what he has done for the College. For what he has done has not been just in his work but in him, in his presence here, in the presence of a good man, wise and just and kind and reliable beyond doubt, a man all men could trust and respect. f97S vtt Dr. Robert Hobbs, Chairman Charles G.
