The Senior Class Presents PAN URAMA 1966 Clarion- Limestone Area School R. D. l, Strattanville, Pennsylvania 1 Dedication In 1965, Mr. Fred C. Barrett retired from teaching. When he left, he took with him an excellent record, as well as the love and respect of everyone who knew him. In his field, music, Mr. Barrett is one of the best. Behind the simple phrase, Certified in Instrumental Musicf' lies more than iifty years of experience in all fields of music. In 1914 he first started band work, and he stayed with it until 1921 when he became a private music teacher. In 1940 after twenty years of private teaching he began to teach in the public school at Sykesville. After teach- ing there for four years, he went to Brookville, where he taught for four more years. Then, in 1949, he came here, where, for seventeen years, he gave untiring service to the students and the school. He was no ordinary teacher, for he took up where others left off. In his classes, he taught more than the mere knowledge of music, he taught the feeling and love for music better than anyone else could. If any student wanted help or showed great interest, Mr. Barrett was ready to do all that he could to teach him more. During the summer months, under his direction and the time that he gave, our school band became well-known throughout our area as well as in Ohio. Often he would take the band to concerts in Pittsburgh on his own time, sometimes, coming home from an engagement, he would buy lunch for the band with his own money. In recognition and sincere gratitude for his dedication and loyalty, the class of 1966 hereby dedicate this yearbook to a great teacher, Mr. Barrett. 2 sing 1. K' o ,M S . h 5 Wm why Q -f m 'R . Mr. Bailey completed seventh through tenth grade IQ tests and administered the P.S.A.T. and N.E.D.T. tests. Much time was spent on college, nursing, and technical school applications for the seniors. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mr. Louis Daugherty, Mr. Raymond Smith, Mr. Gerald Smith, and Mr. john Shofestall are the instructors in the Science Department. The new Earth and Space Science is being taught by Mr. Shofestall to the advanced eighth graders and a few seniors who took a field trip to Titusville last fall. A course of Biological Science Curriculum Study Biology has been added to the science curriculum and is being taught by Mr. Gerald Smith. In addition to the new biology, a new mobile unit has been installed. Mr. Daugherty is our very capable chemistry and physics instructor. A great deal of praise belongs to our in- stmctors of science. MATH DEPARTMENT The big change in this department this year has been in the elementary and junior high grades. In September, the NewD or Modern Math was introduced to the seventh and eighth grades by Mr. Smail and Mr. Dechant. The students are finding that it takes a lot more logical thinking to master the new math than it did the old traditional math, but still it merely consists of new ways to arrive at the same old con- clusions. In addition to the Modern Math, the traditional Algebra, Plane Geometry, and Trigonometry courses are being taught by Mr. Stanczak and Mr. Dechant. LIBRARY DEPARTMENT Mrs. Bevevino and her assistants have Worked hard this year to make the library an efficient and progressive department. Be- sides the normal functions of a library, a branch, the Audio Visual Club, provides trained operators for equipment issued to classes. The Library Department also pro- vides an excellent course in the use of the library and its materials. With the addition of many new books this year, the library has become a department that is a valuable aid to everyone in the school. ART DEPARTMENT The Art Department this year was un- der the guidance of Mr. Thomas Wilczek. Junior high classes studied the basic ele- ments of art and touched on many other aspects. Elective Art students were given a great deal of freedom to Work on projects of interest to them. They also were respon- sible for posters, bulletin boards and sea- sonal decorations. Mr. Wilczekis main aim this year was to instill in his students a genuine appreciation of art. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department, under the supervision of Mrs. McLaughlin and Miss Leaming, helped perfect skills in the stu- dents entering the business field. A course in office practice was offered for the first time this year. This course introduced stu- dents to such machines as adding machines, printing calculators, rotary calculators, and the Dictaphone. The Commercial Club newly organized last year, presented speak- ers from different business colleges and ob- served a large business in operation during a Pittsburgh tour in the spring. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT The Home Economies Department was very busy this year. Under the direction of Miss Cirardat, the seventh, eighth and ninth grades Worked on regular cooking and serving projects. The girls in Vocational Ilome Economics discussed Family Living and planned and prepared meals. Each of the students was also required to make something from wool. The Future Home- makers of America sold candy, had a skat- ing party in December, a Spring Fashion Show and a Banquet. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT The Vocational Agriculture Department otlers a complete course in the Hner points of modern farming. Mr. Allison, the in- structor, shows the boys the best way to operate, care for, and repair farm equip- ment by demonstrating on school equip- ment and by allowing them to bring in their own equipment. In class, he covers the methods of scientific farming and livestock raising, as well as essential points of law. Emphasis is also placed on subjects related to agriculture in the fields of forestry, me- chanics, and industry. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT The Industrial Arts Department, under the direction of Mr. Philp, is experiencing the best year in its constantly improving program. In grades 7 through 9, the boys receive a well-rounded course in making and reading mechanical drawings, in using and caring for shop equipment properly, in practicing safety, and in woodworking. Those in grades 10 to I2 who continue taking industrial arts broaden their skills in woodworking, as well acquire knowledge in the use of metals, plastics, and other shop equipment. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Physical Education Department was greatly expanded this year with the addi- tion of new gymnastic equipment. The first semester both boys, and girls, classes spent improving motor skills by working on the parallel bars, horse, rings and other appa- ratus. The second half of the year, Miss Blakeslee and Mr. Metcalf organized and instructed the students in intramural and team sports. LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The Language Department presently of- fers courses in English, Spanish, and Latin. Four years in English are required for each student with an additional College English course for the college bound. Latin is taught in ninth and tenth grades to those preparing for college as well as an elective. Spanish is taught in fifth and sixth grades and also for three years in high school in grades ten through twelve. Current plans concern the addition of a new language, probably French, to the curriculum by the Fall of 1966. This Department stresses the continual use of good grammar in everyday conversation as well as in formal writing and speaking. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT Knowing about the world's history is a very important part of our lives. For this reason, social studies are required for the four years of high school. This department is comprised of several courses including Civics, Pennsylvania History, American and World History, Problems of Democracy and American Covernment. They are taught by Mr. William Kahle, Mr. Albert Porter, Mrs. Norma Bowersox, Mr. William Hand, Miss Margaret Aaron, and Mr. Frank Augustine. As we study the problems and growth of past generations, we develop a better un- derstanding of our present generation and its problems. DRIVER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Driver Education Department, un- der the direction of our new instructor, Mr. Hand, assisted by Mr. Raymond Smith, aimed toward teaching the students driving skills. The class of 80 gained knowledge in these skills by the many films and through experience on the highway. The main goal of this department is to teach the impor- tance of traffic safety to all who operate an automobile and to reduce the number of traffic accidents. HEALTH DEPARTMENT Our Health Department is headed by Mrs. Margaret Love. She has been busy not only with her regular duties in the ele- mentary and high school, but also as advisor for the Future Nurses. The T. B. Mantoux test is administered annually to the tenth grade with an X-ray if necessary. Physical examinations are conducted for those con- nected with sports as well as for all juniors. The Health Department encourages good physical and dental health. SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The objective of this department is to challenge each student with training and experience in the field to which he is best suited. This necessitates individualized in- struction. The two basic programs in effect this year have been the craft program and the school work program. By taking advantage of what is offered the students train for their future in these and related Helds. As needs of the students change, the program, being flexible, also changes. semons Senior Class Cfficers Ken Thomas-Vice President, Sandy Lyle-Treasurer, -lim Courley-President, Ken Eslibaugh-Secretary. We, the Senior Class of Clarion Limestone High School with the advice and expert guidance of our faculty advisors, Mrs. Maslar, Mrs. McLaughlin, and Mr. Kahle, had a very rewarding year. Our main money making project was the magazine subscription sale. Our efforts earned us nearly 82,000 which helped meet the expenses of our trip to Washington, the highlight of the year for every senior class. We saw so much in the short space of three days that even the rainy weather couldn't dim our spirits. The Senior Class Play, The Boarding House Reachf, presented on November 9 and 10, was a great success and both cast and crew enjoyed the theatrical experience. Yearbook Work was often confusing and dis- heartening, but all the same very rewarding. With the helpful advice of Miss Leaming, our advisor, and the cooperation of all faculty members, we feel that Panorama ,66 is one of the best. Wilbur Maxwell, the hero in our senior play, THE BOARDING HOUSE REACH, thought he could raise the money for his bicycle with the help of his bosom pal, Hercules Nelson. The boarding house started out well but when Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell returned from a business trip to find a wrestler and his wife, an insurance sales- man, a silent-sleep walker, a walking encyclo- pedia and two bank robbers in the house what do you think? All ended well though when Wilbur cap- tured the bank robbers with the aid of an able detective, he was a hero to his mother, father, sisters, aunt, and neighbors. Several weeks of hard work by the cast and the directors brought about the success of this yearls senior play. A great deal of credit be- longs to the play director, Mr. William Kahle, the student director, Sharon Snyder, and the stage crew. The entire cast can thank Mrs. Bevevino, Mrs. Maslar, and Miss Lewis for their marvelous work on make-up and supervision. To be sure, the cast will not forget the fun and excitement involved in their performances. They will remember their parts well into the future. Two matinees were put on as well as the two evening performances. This season, for the iirst time, the Clarion County Champion- ship was determined by the number of wins during the individual meets rather than at the County Meet. The Lions went undefeated to win the championship. At the District IX Track Meet, the C-L Thinclads placed fourth taking enough first and second places to send four men to the State Track Meet, at State College, Pa. These men were jim Vallimont, who ran the mile, Bernard Dechant, who participated in the 220 yard dash, Terry Miller, who high jumped, and Walt Neal, who placed first in the state competition with the pole vault. 1965 Track Scores C.
