Looking back now, particularly to the last four years, we see many teachers and classmates coming and going. Many things have happened to us during the past four years. The following chapters are only very brief summaries of the highlights of those years. CHAPTER 1 We arrived at our freshman year just soon enough to be the last class permitted to show a movie to the students as a money making pro- ject. Our choice, The Bells of St. Mary's, was very well received and it started our treasury growing. To start our trip into higher education on the right foot we elected the following as class offi- cers: President, Susan Wilhelm, Vice-President, Bob Walker, Secretary, Jackie Humphrey, Treas- urer, Pat Frampton. As freshmen a great many changes took place. We no longer migrated from class to class in large groups. The first day back we were confronted with schedules which had to be made out and duplicated for the office. All this pro- vided material for many animated lunch period discussions. Students could refer to subjects that another may have little knowledge of. Only students taking those subjects could fully appreciate the horrible mess they had got- ten themselves into. Taking Latin or Alge- bra for instance. Those not taking either one would classify both subjects as Greeks, wouldn't they? This brings up another new ex- perience some students faced, that of dropping subjects. As some have reasoned, Why take Algebra when l can fill out income tax forms in Math class? Be careful, underclassmen, the grass may not be greener on the other side. This was also the year the freshman class sponsored a semi-formal dance for the entire high school entitled The Harvest Ball. A live tur- key was given away as the door prize and the fact that one of our own classmates won the tur- key was purely coincidental. Having finally completed our freshman year, we were eagerly off to Cook's Forest for a day. Boating, riding, hiking, and eating helped to pass the time which went all too soon. lt was a day we shall always hold dear in our hearts. As a matter of fact, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we began to plan for a return trip the fol- lowing year. CHAPTER 2 This year's class officers were: President, Jim Bookwalter, Vice-President, Susan Wilhelm, Sec- retary, Fred Mills, and Treasurer, Bob Walker. This year only a few of the very bravest signed on the dotted line to take a year of Latin ll. An even dozen completed the course with three rousing cheers for Miss Evans, Julius Cae- sar, Hercules, and the whole bunch. We organ- ized a Latin Club that year and took a trip to Pittsburgh to visit the planetarium, the museum, and the airport. For one day all the grueling hours of translation and Latin grammar faded into oblivion. The Sadie Hawkins Dance is annually held and traditionally sponsored by the sophomore class and we were no exception. A sewed-on patch was required for admittance to the dance floor. On and around the fioor were Dogpatch scenes and characters. As can be expected at this type of dance, there was a lot of folk danc- ing as well as modern music for both types pro- vided for by an orchestra and later on by rec- ords. As you can imagine if you weren't there, it was a real fun night. A second trip to Cook's Forest was planned for the Saturday after school was out. The day dawned cool and wet. Rain poured down all morning-but do you think it kept us under shel- ters? It most certainly did not. Bicycle rides and canoeing on the not-overly-dry Allegheny River were enthusiastically attacked. We found out it rains in the forest hours after it has stopped on the outside. Therefore, we only got dry in front of a roaring fire at supper time. CHAPTER 3 Those elected as junior class officers were: President, Mike Hufnagel, Vice-President, Fred Mills, Secretary, Kathy Aaron, and Treasurer, Jim Bookwalter. The junior year is that year which comes im- mediately before the senior year. This is the one in which the class treasury must be swelled to such proportions as to meet the expenses of both the junior and senior years to a great ex- tent. The sale of stationery takes months but it accomplishes the purpose of raising the needed funds. Right after the major part of our stationery sales were over, the P.T.A. had us sell mixed nuts and chocolate covered caramels. They were expensive but oh, so delicious! The proceeds for this went to help pay for the prom-to-dawn party in the spring. Senior Class History As the climax to the junior year comes the Junior-Senior Prom. FANTASY OF THE SEA was the theme selected by our class. A fountain which in testing, shot water up and over the sides of its container added a touch of realism to the wat- ery, mystic decorations. The decorations were worked out in blue and pink. Along the walls, pink waves supported colorful fish and other marine life. The night of the prom everything was ready. A light breeze, blowing through the multicolored paper ceiling, added an atmosphere which was both cooling and shady. On stage the scene of an underwater throne room was portrayed. The king and queen sat inside a huge pink clamshell, surrounded by beautiful spiral pillars of blue crepe paper, and two monstrous octopi. Susan Wilhelm reigned as our queen, with Fred Mills as king. Kathy Aaron and Mike Hufnagel were their attendants. The members of the Queen's Court were: Cheryl Gearhart Lawrence Fitzsimmons Donna Beers Don Wenner Linda Beers Ed Mills Darlene Patton Thomas Wensel Sonja Silvis William Maul Jackie Humphrey Charles Thompson Patty Frampton Dennis Rhoades Janet Greenwood Doug Slaugenhoup Judy Stahlman Vincent Crate Joyce Dolecki Dennis Luther Andy Mills and Danny Daugherty acted as crown bearers, Susie Slaugenhaupt and Debbie Mills were flower girls, and Susan Augustine presented red roses to our queen. The Prom following the coronation ended at midnight only to be followed by the Prom-to- Dawn party. This never-to-be-forgotten night ended at 5:00 A.M. leaving everyone who had a part in it tired but happy. CHAPTER 4 The senior class officers are: President, Kathy Aaron, Vice-President, Pete Burchfield, Secretary, Fred Mills, Treasurer, Janet Greenwood. Selling magazine subscriptions is the main money raising project undertaken by seniors. One who has never been a senior has no idea of the time and effort involved. That is, if one can get past such remarks as, l just bought a five year subscription last spring, or, l have a nephew for niecej who is a senior and l promised to order from him. For all those who sold their quota of subscriptions the reward was canvas- sing for ads. Being out in the cold for three days had its merits, however, such as hot chocolate and cold ice cream. All in all, it was a delicious experience in spite of a lot of hard work and fast talking. When it was announced that the senior play would be put on in the fall instead of the spring, the widespread comment was a horrified, Oh, no, not now! When the reality of four consecu- tive dates circled in red on the calendar loomed ominously in the too close present, sheer panic gripped the hearts of Mrs. Maslar and Mr. Kurcis, not to mention the actors and actresses. Some- one once said, The show must go on, and ours did. ln the past was the frantic searching for clothing that wouldn't clash with the orange walls. Our first performance was before the grade school, then the high school, followed by two evening performances. Mashed bananas, very wet water, and one shattered first scene couldn't dim the feeling of accomplishment and relief that accompanied the close of the final curtain. During our trip to Washington, D. C. we saw in less than three days, everything we had heard about in the capital. lt was exhausting but he who has never climbed the Washington Monu- ment, or seen paper money printed, or admired the Capitol Building lit up at night due to an in- ternational crisis, hasn't lived. During one of our class meetings this year we took up the vitally important matter of choosing a class fiower, motto, and colors. To speed things up, suggestions were made by the year- book editors. When the ballots were counted, lavender and white were the colors, a white car- nation, the fiower, and lt matters not what you are thought to be but what you are, was the motto. The project which takes the most time and effort during the senior year is the yearbook. A large percentage of our class has been extremely busy drawing, writing, typing, proof reading, and laying out the material in the order which you see before you now. It's a big job with a lot of decisions and deadlines connected with it but, at last, this too was finished. Many other things have happened to us as a class or as individuals. For instance, many have played basketball, been cheerleaders, or partici- pated in track and field events. ln 1961 our girls, who were in Home-Ec. at the time, stormed Harrisburg and the Farm Show. Club activities, too, have been a part of our school life. Switching back now to the present, all sys- tems are A-OK in regards to the future. Our high school years can be summed up as simply -4-3-2-l- Blastoff! The Big Dome Rain, Rain, Go Away 37 The Washington Tr'p For twelve years we have been looking forward to our senior trip to the na- tion's capital, Washington, D. C. We began our trip in the gray dawn of Novem- ber l and arrived late in the afternoon. After going to the zoo we checked in at the hotel. Following dinner we began a tour of the city which was by now ablaze with lights. In the following two days we saw many sights including: The Wash- ington Cathedral, the Smithsonian Institute, the Washington Monument, the Cap- itol Building and the White House, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Supreme Court Building, the Treasury and F.B.l. Buildings, Mount Vernon, and the Lincoln Memorial. At the Washington Monument we all climbed or rode the elevator to the top and had a bird's eye view of the city. In the F.B.I. Building we were taken on a tour through it and saw the many crime detecting departments. We were taken through the Senate and House of Representatives' wings of the Capitol and were given lectures in each. After viewing the Lincoln Memorial where we admired the great statue of our sixteenth President, we saw the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Our second evening we attended the movie, WEST SIDE STORY, which was not only entertaining but educational. Even our trip home was an exciting adventure as we found our buses moving, not through the balmy evening typical of early November, but through a bliz- zard. The C-L school, and parents waiting to transport us home, were a welcome conclusion to three happy days of travel. 38 Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of Clarion-Limestone Joint School, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, do of our own free will, and being of sound mind, make this our LAST WILL and TESTAMENT. Play tryouts brought to light a fine cast for our three-act play, STOP THE WEDDING. After- school rehearsals were in order for several weeks. Then, right in the middle of our valu- able two months' rehearsal time came our trip to Washington, D. C. Mrs. Maslar suggested that we take our play books along, so off went a number of books to Washington and, fortunate- ly, the same number came back. Upon our return we really got down to work learning lines, rounding up props, and assem- bling the scenery. The Sound Effects Department was kept busy tape recording the wedding march, door bells, and various other sounds. Those in the Props Department had the problem of securing two Navy and one Marine uniform that fit the players. Mr. Kurcis and his stage crew took care of scenery, the major portion of which were brilliant orange walls. For several nights of practice there was a near-disastrous food shortage for the members of the cast who also played basketball and could not get home after practice to eat. This was taken care of by several kind-hearted fellow stu- dents. Four days ancl four performances ended the weeks of concentrated effort. During the first scene of the first act of our first performance for the elementary schools three pages of script were left out, resulting in many actors being left on stage without an exit line. The performance be- fore the high school went a great deal more smoothly, as did the evening ones. The play's action centered around Bill Jones, an ex-Navy man home just in time to stop his fiancee's wedding to another man. The mayor, the girl's father, is very upset over the whole affair and reaches for the aspirin in every crisis. Bill is completely unperturbed by the bedlam he has created with a crate of monkeys, the visit of an Eskimo girl, and other equally shattering events. Bill soon gets restless again and, after breaking up his own wedding, he heads for the sea, much to the mayor's relief. Prom Court of 1962-1963 3 Vi! Lions Win County Meet Rhoades and Spangler go to State The thinclads of Clarion-Limestone won their fifth consecutive Clarion County Track Meet and placed third in the District IX Meet during the T962 season. That the Lions started the season out right was evidenced by impressive victories over West Forest and Union. Keystone then defeated the Lions who were in no way dis- couraged as they went on to win the next three meets, as well as the Clarion County Meet. At the District IX Meet Don Rhoades placed first in all three of his events- the high jump, pole vault, and the 440 yard dash. Eugene Spangler placed first in the mile. Don Rhoades climaxed a brilliant four year period at Clarion-Limestone by placing second in the 440 yard dash at the State Meet. Don was awarded as the outstanding athlete at Clarion-Limestone for the T961-1962 year. Many members of the Clarion-Limestone team placed in the Clarion County Meet. Don Rhoades placed first in the high iump, pole vault, and 440 yard dash, Terry Carter took a first in Javelin while Pete Burchfielcl took a second in the broad iump and Eugene Spangler took second in the mile. Larry Walter tied for second in the high iump, Dennis Rhoades and Denny Luther took third place in the pole vault and the shot put, while Tom Beveridge placed third in Javelin. The Lions placed third in the Mercer Meet. Coach Metcalf has high hopes for his 1963 team to be a strong one as he will have a nucleus of returning lettermen. Among those turning out for track practice will be Eugene Spangler, Denny Luther, Larry Walter, Tom Beveridge, Don Kindel, Pete Burchfield, Eugene Cummings, Tim Elder, Kent Pope, Jim Valli- mont, and Walt Neal. 1962 MEETS Clarion-Limestone 75 ...........,... . . . Music Department Under the patient direction of Mrs. Blish cmd Mr. Barrett, all the students in the music depart- ment have learned much this year. Even before this school year began, our band was performing in Fireman's Parades throughout the neighboring communities. ln October of this year the band marched in the annual Clarion Autumn Leaf Fes- tival and Halloween Parades. After many months of conscientious practice the band climaxed its season with the Spring Band Festival held in April. ln September, soon after school opened, each choral group began to practice for the Christmas Concert although December was many months away. This year's concert was again highlighted by the customary Procession of the Greens in which senior girls with three years of choral ex- perience participate. The Christmas concert indi- cates the halfway mark of the year's choral work. The end of this phase was barely reached when, immediately after the return from Christmas va- cation, these groups began practicing for their next performance, the Spring Choral Festival. Both of these programs were under the very able direction of Mrs. Blish. As always, they were a credit to Mrs. Blish, the participants, and the school. This year the County Music Festival was held at Redbank Valley High School in New Bethlehem. Thirty-one students from our school joined in this county-wide event. The District Choral Festival was held in Sharps- ville, Pa., with our school being represented by Kathy Kroh, Judy Stahlman, Kent Pope, Don Wen- ner, and Tom Wensel. Two members of our Band, Tom Wensel and Curtis Barrett, went to the District Band Festival which was held at West Middlesex in March. These District Choral and Band Festivals pro- vided valuable experience and were much en- joyed by all who participated. Chora Concerts Of 1962 87 Mixed Chorus Bottom Rowll, to RJ: S. Miller, S. With- out it the odds of its reaching its goal are much less. ln a school the students need a guidance system. Such a system is our guidance counselor for he directs us toward futures in the service, college, iobs, and many other. He is indeed an important piece in the ma- chinery of the school for wi.hout him we would aim tor, but not obtain, our goals. In a rocket this system is called o gyroscope, in our school it is called Mr. Lines. Library The graduate of three years ago would not recog- nize our library. lf any of these people visited now, they would find a growing collection of new books. It is easy for one to study in an atmosphere conducive to it, and in our library people want to study. Some- body must oversee and care for the many books so we have as librarian, Mrs. Bevevino, who is very generous with her help. Science Department Mr. Smith and Mr. Daugherty are the instructors ot the Science Department. Mr. Smith teaches biology and general science while Mr. Daugherty is the capable physics and chemistry teacher. Most students agree that the sciences are extremely interesting subjects. Where else does one have the opportunity of spilling hydrochloric acid on his best sweater, shirt, or pants? Where else can one endanger one's life and limb by explosion, fires and poison gases? Only in science class! Mathematics Department Mrs. Nelson and Miss Evans are the instructors in our malh departments. Togelher they try to drill into our heads such complexities of the science as Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Trig. All know well that their students respect them for they have mastered the lan- guage of numbers, a dialect as much in our history as that of the spoken word. We thank these teachers for their efforts, in vain in some cases, to teach us this language. 94 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT With the help of Miss Leaming, skills in typ- ing, bookkeeping, and shorthand are the ulti- mate goals of those in the Commercial Depart- ment. Neatness and efficiency go hand in hand with speed-writing and typing. Practical experi- ence is gained by doing secretarial work for the faculty. Yearbook typing is also done by our department. For those who plan to enter secre- tarial or bookkeeping work, the knowledge gained through this course is vital. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT The initiation of new members into the F.H.A. began this year's fun and work combination. In February we served a tea for the C-L Board of Directors. We also held our annual spring mother and daughter banquet and style show. In addition to these activities we are taught to cook, bake, sew, and develop the various other skills necessary for home management. AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT Under the guidance of Mr. Bickerstaff, the boys in the AG. Department learn a great deal about the many phases involved in farm work and farm management. The boys divide their time between classroom and shop work where they acquire practical experience. Farm elec- tricity, safety, forestry, and law are only a few of the many subjects undertaken during this course. Agriculture is an important industry, one in which education plays a major role. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Student safety is stressed and practiced when working in the shop. To all boys from 7th to 9th grade industrial arts is a required subject. During these years, while making their projects, they learn to operate the tools used in wood and metal work. For those continuing in shop work the students study mechanical drawing and learn to construct various projects from draw- ings, Anyone interested in industrial arts as an occupation finds an excellent beginning in this course. 95 Social Studies Department History is continually being made so it must be con- tinually studied. Because of this, social studies, in one form or another, is a required subject during all four years of high school. Civics, Pennsylvania History, American and World History, Problems of Democracy, and American Government are the courses taught in grades 9 through 12. This program of studies of the growth of civilization and man's struggle to profit by his mistakes is applicable to our times also. Language Department The Language Department includes courses in Eng- lish, Spanish, and Latin. Four years of English are re- quired for each student with an additional College English course offered to college preparatory students. Latin is taught in ninth and tenth grades to students preparing for college as well as to others as an elec- tive. Starting this year, Spanish is taught in fifth and sixth grades and again for three years in high school in grades ten through twelve. Health Department Mrs. Smith was exceptionally busy this year with duties as our school nurse. Cooperating with the Clar- ion Osteopathic Hospital, all types of the Sabin vac- cine were administered to the students and commun- ity. In grades 'I and 'IO the T.B. Mantoux test is given annually which may be followed up by an X-ray. Phy- sical examinations are given to students involved in interscholastic sports. This Department continually en- courages checkups by the family physician. Drivers' Training Driver's Training means different things to different people, but at C.L. it means Mr. Myers, the capable in- structor of the hazardous art of driving. Mr. Myers and Mr. Raymond Smith, an equally competent instruc- tor, along with the smooth-running bomb called Chevy Il, comprise the drivers' training faculty. This course is very refreshing for the rank and file of students who are enrolled, and it is a successful course for the ma- iority of students although there are always a few typ- ical women drivers. 96 Yearbook Editors EDITOR Cheryl Geu rharf PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR CO-EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGER TYPING EDITOR Tom Wensel Patty Frampfon Fred Mills Donna Beers X LITERARY EDITOR ART EDITOR LAYOUT EDITOR SPORTS EDITOR Diunn Sireufor Ed Mills June' Greenwood Denny Ransom 97 LAYOUT STAFF ADVERTISING STAFF Yearbook Stall Members Bottom Row IL. to RJ: Miss Leaming, G.
