Kerr The School Board Although the pictures on this page display no captions list' ing extra-curricular activities of the persons portrayed, it is a certainty that these menis activities are by no means insig- nificant. The knotty problems of administration encountered by a board of directors make the most perplexing scholastic dilemna seem small by comparison. WVe refer to service on the Board of Education as an extra- curricular activity because the members are paid absolutely nothing for their time and talents. Remembrance of this fact would be beneficial for those who are unappreciative of the labor of our directors. The magnitude of their task can be better visualized when We refiect on the fact that they supervise the spending of more than 35100000 annually-the largest expenditure in the townships. Our Board of Directors has a liberal and progressive outlook on the social functions connected With the school. By per- mitting and promoting these social affairs the cultural side of education is absorbed and they deserve praise for their good judgment on this and other related issues. VVe high school students and the public at large are grateful to our directors and appreciate their unselfish attitude to- ward school problems. Cordon J. It is during this period that the very foundation-structure of your lives is being developed. The early record constitutes the springboard for your entry into the great sea of lifeis work and activities. Remember that what you do every day, even though it may seem trivial at the time, is building your foundation record. This record will either count for you or against you. In the final analysis each individual to a large extent is his ovvn architect in determining his own record. Teachers can help but education is of necessity a coopera- tive process. Therefore, I urge each individual to take his early education seriously, and put forth his best effort day by day, so that the accumulated total will not be a record against him but a record for him. Senior Class History On account of the firm insistence of our 8th grade teachers and a passing score from the 8th grade examination, a group of 71 bewildered students assembled as Freshmen in September 1944, in our hoped-to-be Alma Materf, There was much enjoyment in getting ac- quainted with our new home-room teachers, Mrs. Sonfier and Miss Kin f. The next thin Y with Ie which we were plagued was a number of books. Could anything come from them? we asked. Our first formal matter of business was the election ot officers who were: President .,......i. ...,...., E dwin McKinley Vice President . Margaret Reinsel Secretary ..,., ,. . ,,i,.i, Thomas Kerr Treasurer ...., . , . Martha Adamson At the time of initiation, we had never heard of the New Lookv but nevertheless we had it. The Sophomores, for some reason, enforced a sudden but short-lived change in the mode of dressing. This initiation made us all the more eager to become Sophomores when it would be our turn to do the initiating. VVe also want to remember as Freshmen the success of our skating parties and our dance. We pause here to express our sincere regret that Martha Adamson, one of our leading class- mates, was killed in an airplane crash on August 9, 1945. September 1945, brought 66 of our 71 Fresh- men back to go on with their course of study and this year take a step further to be 'iSunny Sopho- moresf, This year Miss Evans and Mr. Riley were our advisers and we elected the following offi- cers: President , ,. , . , ..,. . Clair Miller Vice President , Richard Hildebrand Secretary .,... . ,.,... Margaret Reinsel Treasurer .. . . Eugene Daugherty Our activities included the sponsoring of dances after the basketball games and several skating parties. VVe had refrained from our timidity by this time and joined the other students in basketball, cheerleading, orchestra, band, choruses, and many other activities. We left this year eager to return as Jolly luniorsv next year. In ,46, we returned to welcome many new students from Hawthorne and Corsica which gave us a total of 77 members in our class when We were capably guided by Mr. Kahle, Miss Coon, and Mr. Aaron and our new officers: President .,., . .. ..,,. Chauncey Shick Vice President . Ronald Skidmore Secretary .,..... .. Margaret Reinsel Treasurer ,. ,,.,.. ,..... .....,.,. I c ihn Mohney A big event in this yearis activities was the sponsoring of the movie, To Each His Own , in which we surpassed every other class in profit. Senior Class History We also had a Halloweien party which proved very entertaining. Our New Year's treat was our long-awaited class rings. What a group of happy Juniors! The main event of our Junior year was the sponsoring of our Prom. The date was set for May 2, 1947. The Juniors elected Margaret Rein- sel as Queen and she was crowned by June White, Queen of 1947.7 Clair Miller was chosen as king. Blue and pink worked in our color scheme and the theme Stardust,, was portrayed by the decorations. The Queen chose as her Maid of Honor, Kelly Ann Kesner and in her court: Joan Miller, Jeanne Smith, Elva Mae Collett, Dorothy Kennedy, Evelyn Rosenquest, Virginia Reynolds, Joanne Fitzsimmons, and Edna Martz. The king chose as his court: John Mohney, Vance Burns, Darrell Terwilliger, Edwin McKin- ley, Robert Allison, Eugene Daugherty, Ronald Skidmore, and Thomas Kerr. After the crowning of the queen, Fredi Rico and his orchestra played as their first number a request, Stardustv, which suited the theme of our Prom. Our class sponsored a school newspaper started as a Junior Class project and elected the staff. The Junor Class of '49 is continuing this project so our pioneer work is reaping its reward. In September 1947, fifty-six of our Juniors who wished to complete their high school educa- tion returned with Miss Stewart and Miss Ment- zer as our advisers. Some members of our class have attended this school for twelve years of its existence. We are really the uiirstv class to receive our complete education at C-L. Our oflicers this year include: President ...........,........ Edwin McKinley Vice President ...,....,.,. Ronald Skidmore Secretary ,.,.....,.... .. Margaret Reinsel Treasurer ., .... ...,,.,. E ugene Daugherty On September 26, 1947, we had a big re- union, The Carnival Dancef for our alumni of ,47 and also the Sophomores, Juniors and Sen- iors who had to leave us to go to Summerville High School. Jeanne Raybuck was elected Queen of the Carnivalv by the High School and was crowned by Betty Lyle. Her attendants were Dorothy Kennedy, Elva Mae Collett, Joanne Fitzsimmons, Kelly Ann Kesner, Virginia Rey- nolds, Mary Anne Hedrick. Edwin McKinley, Darrell Terwilliger, Donald Reynolds, Ronald Skidmore, Eugene Daugherty, Robert Allison. John Mohney and Ed Summerville were her guards. Our big project this year is the yearbook which at this time is progressing very well. The .Advertising Committee has raised 81084.00 which will help considerably with the expense of it. The magazine sales with Captains Edna Martz, Eugene Daugherty, Betty Lyle, Kelly Ann Kesner proved to be a success. Robert Allison received a pen and pencil set as a prize for his meritorious selling. Our profits totaled 829556. Our Christmas card sales also added to our treasury, topping any other classes known. A total proiit of 95355.26 was realized. We have chosen our class play, A Case of Springtimev and we are sure it will also be a success and add to our profits. Our Senior Class has been very active this year and have realized 81,300 to date. Finan- cially our class has been very successful-It leads all classes in the history of the school in finan- cial activities. Yes, this is the history of the Class of '48. Those days of ---- Wish I were out of here, I'll be so glad to be a seniori' ---- are here and almost gone. Soon class parties, our big basketball games, dances, and many other activities, will only be memories--Memories weive decided ,we never want to forget. Our 84 members were widely scattered over the surrounding communities, but we soon got acquainted and chose our class oflicers, who proved to be very efficient. The officers were: President ...,..,..,. ..... ......,., D o n Heasley Vice-President .,..,. Virginia Moore Secretary ....... .,..,.. K athleen Haines Treasurer ...,.............,...,., Evelyn Corbett Our various activities of the year netted us a profit of 88683. When we left at the end of the term, we felt proud of our progressive class. This year our class membership was reduced to 67, because many of our friends went to Sum- merville. VVe soon organized and elected our officers. They are: President ...,........ ....... S ally Collett V ice-President .,.,,. ,.......... D uane Neal Secretary ....,....,... ,.... You have guessed it, Initiation!', We all had a wonderful time, even though our bus drivers were doubtful about hauling us. We gave an entertaining pro- gram, and know our good sportsmanship was ap- preciated by the 'iluniorsf' VVe will never forget the sponsoring of our i'Sadie Hawkins Day Dancef, Everyone had a wonderful time, and we profited by it. We are planning to sponsor a movie and a skating party. VVe are sure our activities will be successful. Our enthusiasm spells SUCCESS,' for us. Our class members are well represented in school affairs-girls, and boys, basketball, cheer- leading, band, orchestra, and the choruses. 'lf 11. .14 Case Ui Springtime She hopes that these ladies may intercede for her son. Bob is all set to prove how misunderstood he is, and that he is quite a fine young man, but his plan is shattered. The night the P. T. A. ladies are to come, there is also a college dance. Betty, Bob's sister, and Eddie. joarfs brother, are going double-dating with Ioan and a college fellow. They plan to stop at the Parker home after the dance for a snack. Dickie has set up a whole series of home-made booby traps Ccontrived out of hot pads, red pepper, needles, and electric fanj He has set these traps to get even with Ioan for the way she had been treating Bob. The P. T. A. ladies walk right into the traps. They are sure it was Bobis fault. F rantically angry, they want to denounce him to the authorities, but that isn't necessary. I Meanwhile, Bob finds two small animals fwhich he thinks are rabbitsj in the park near the zoo. He takes them home to feed and care for them. After the animals have had several offspring, Bob decides to sell them. He takes the two he found to the pet shop for approval. The owner of the shop calls the Zoo and also calls the police. A Plainclothesmanv comes to take Bob to headquarters just as the P. T. A. ladies were about to denounce him. Events take a sudden and de- lightful turn when Miss Bright arrives from the zoo. She seems delighted that Bob has taken such good care of the animals. She asks to see the offspring. She tells him that he has done something that the zoo has been unable to do-propa.- gate them. She asks if anyone knows what kind of animals they are, then tells them that the animals are chinchillas of the South American type. Each one is worth 8300. She thanks Bob for taking care of the animals and tells him he may keep the twenty-seven offspring. In the end Bob and Ioan become practically engaged. Mr. Abernaker de- cides that Bob will make quite a resourceful son-in-law. Bob Parker ..... Mr. Parker ..... . Mrs. Parker .. . Betty Parker , Dickie Parker ........ ....... The music department has presented several assembly programs. Our band presented the following entertainment for the assembly November 12, 1947: '6Soldiers, Chorusv, from the opera Faustv by Gounod, Take Off Marchv by G. E. Holmes, Flagship Marchv by G. E. Holmes. Our 16 piece band is under the capable direction of Mrs. Stephen Carrier of Summerville, Pennsylvania. ORCHESTRA Orchestra gives to those who are musically talented an opportunity to use their talents and to develop them to their greatest extent. Music is a universal language which we all may enjoy. There is great satisfaction in creating pleasure and enjoyment for others as well as entertainment for our- selves. VVe feel that we have improved greatly under the able direction of Miss Anna Marie Keller. MIXED CHORUS The first big event for Mixed Chorus this year was the Christmas Can- tata, Childe jesusv which was presented December 16, 1947 in the school auditorium. The Chorus spent many long hours of special practices as well as the regularly scheduled Wednesday afternoon practices. in preparation for this program. The Christmas story was portrayed on the stage in panto- mime by other members of the student body. Shortly after the Cantata was presented the chorus made two record- ings of excerpts from the Cantata. Among these were: The Holy Nighty, Solo by Ed McKinley, K'Today There Is Ringingv, Angels We have Heard On Highn, The First Noelu, Come All Ye Faithfulf, and O Come, O Come Emmanuelf, VVe have now decided to present a minstrel show the Georgia Jubilee Minstrelv. This has caused much excitement and enthusiasm among our 40 members as almost every one is to be a black-facev Several of the num- bers are going to be original and this will show the initiative and resource- fulness of our choral group. THE GEORGIA IUBILEE MINSTREL At the time this book goes to press the Mixed Chorus is formulating plans for a minstrel show. Mr. Kahle has been chosen as Interlocutor. The End Men selected are Don Moore, Kenny Wencil, Dick Fleming, Tom Armagost, Lowell Stahlman, and Elwood Rankin. Plans for the special music and novelty numbers have not been completed. But with enthusiasm running high among the forty chorus members we expect the show to be a smash hit. The Minstrel will be given about the middle of March. 50 C59 Art Department 'l'l1ird Row llc-it to riglitl-Ronald Pasqlwrvttc, Earl Slniinalwr, Kc-itli Iletriclf, Ronald Tcrwilligcr, Ricliard Jones Sm-ondRow-B1-tty l'lOlX'1'fSUll,CiC'llL'Xlk'NCxVllClC,IOl1ll Cross, Xvllit- Hcpoll, plvaiim' Siniili, Eu-lyn lioscnquest, Ray , Kalile, Louvlla Bootli lfront How-Ricliartl Rankin, Don Hvinscl. joannc Fitzsinnnons, Avanellc Milla-r, Miss Coon, Gerald Walter, Pliyllis Iletriclc, Vada Marin' Oakley, Kvlly Ann Ke-sner Almscnt when pic-turn' was taken-Bill Girts, Dale Miller, Bill Martz ART REPORT Miss Coon, our Art supervisor. has encouraged her stndcnts to be prac- tical in thc fields of art so that our time spcnt here can bc applied to our everyday living.
