Among its duties are the hiring of all school personnel. the handling of all business directly affecting the jointure. and generally overseeing the activities of the school. The board Consists of five members from each of the districts-Clarion Borough and Paint, Highland. and Monroe Townships. O ccccccccc,cccvr,c..,cccccccccc.,..O, Mid-Term Examinations emor Class Officers Left to Right: Floyd Frazier, Sara Anson Walter Qmlth Barrv Reddlnger As graduates, we look over our shoulders and remember- sometimes ruefully, sometimes fondly: Kindergartenvlwhis was an orientation period. Half-days of all play and no work prepared us for: Elementary Grades-These were years of learning the three R,s and looking forward to the fourth R+-recess. The first four years slipped by in a blur of spelling books and multi- plication tables. ln fifth grade things became more difficult. We received our first introduction to fractions and the spelling words became longer. We wondered if we could survive sixth grade with its added burden of homework. Vile had been introduced to this phenomenon earlier: but now we were on more casual terms with it. Then came the big break-through: Junior High-Wearing a self-conscious grin. we stumbled uncertainlv into seventh grade. Wie were caught up in a whirl of new activities. Arithmetic assumed the scholarly name of mathematics. The burden of added homework was slightly relieved by the inclusion of study halls in our schedules. More often than not. however. studying was put aside during these periods for more exciting things such as test flights of paper airplanes. spit-ball battles. and discussing last week's football game. It took some of us several days to discover that recess had been terminated. Vive looked awkward at our first school dance. but we didn't care. ln eighth grade the girls began to pay more attention to the boys and the boys began to pay more attention to such things as football and basketball. The following year we entered the new school. ln the ungainly position of ninth graders. too old to be called Junior High students. but not officially members of the Senior High. we struggled through l.atin and Algebra and laughed when our younger brothers and sisters complained about long division. But the best was yet to come: Senior High-We had arrivedl :Xfter long anticipation. we emerged from our shells as slightly bewildered. slightly con- ceitecl. but very enthusiastic Sophomores. By now homework had become our constant companion. Wle received our first real taste of culture by studying 'Ilulius Caesar and a few of the more fortunate ones got a slight taste of heaven when they attended the Prom. The big event of our Junior year was the ordering of class rings. a large number of which mysteriously turned up on the fingers of our best boy or girl friends. This year we were all eligible to attend the Prom and many of us took advantage of the privilege. ln May we said good-bye to the Seniors and prepared ourselves for: Our Senior YearfThe culmination of twelve years of prep- aration, anticipation. doubt, and hope had been reached. The most exciting and important year of our young lives was upon us, With the beginning of school came the job of preparing our Yearbook. Late in September work was begun on the Class Play, which was unveiled to the public November lelth. This was the first time in many years that the play had been presented in the fall. With the ordering of Commencement invitations came the first realization that we would soon be giving way to another crop of Seniors. Throughout the year several of the girls acquired their diamonds. which made their future plans a certainty. For the rest of us. however, there was the task of deciding what to do after graduation. Should we further our education or seek employment? Before we realized what happened, our Senior year was nearly over. The Prom had been the rnost beautiful event we had ever attended and. in a sense. one of the saddest: for we realized that this would be the last social affair we would ever attend as high school students. And then. with that crowning event of graduation at hand. we were ready for whatever was to follow. The 2l60 days of our education had gone by so quickly that it was hard to believeg yet. we shall always remember them as the happiest and most constructive days of our lives. There- fore, as we join that group known as alumni, we take with us many fond memories and a knowledge that these years have taught us things which we will use in whatever endeavors we attempt. To the underclassmen we say. Good luck. and leave the reminder that this is the most enjoyable period in a person's life. Take the fullest advantage of it and you. like us. will have invaluable memories forever. Bob Fraz- ier. -:1- 24' tudent Council Each Thursday the sixteen members of the Student Council assemble in Room 18 to discuss the problems of the school With the guidance of their President, Walter Smith, and the invaluable assistance of their advisor, Dr. Wilhelni, the Council studies the many problems of the student body and makes numerous recommendations to the administration The Student Councilis project for this year was the study of cafeteria operation in other schools, the results of which were passed on to the administration. It is hoped that these suggestions will provide for smoother and more efficient operation. The Student Council is truly the backbone of student life in the school and should enjoy the support of everyone Key Club Although small in membership. the Key Club, sponsored by Dr. Wilhelm. is one of the most active in the school With its motto. We Buildw, and its object, 'To prepare for useful citizenship . this organization promotes higher stand ards in scholarship, sportsmanship, and social contacts. Varsity CG 99 The Varsity Cf, un- der the sponsorship of Mr. Zwald and Mr. Brochetti, is one of the larger and, by far, more active clubs at C.J.H.S. A number of activi- ties were undertaken by the Varsity HCM this year. Among these were the sale of Bobcat pins, equipping the loclcer room with a loud speak- er system, and the op- eration of a concession s t a n d at basketball games. 7I Tumbling and l mpic Club The membership of the Tumbling Club is comprised of girls who enjoy performing on the horse, the parallel bars, and the mats. These girls learn various stunts and grain accuracy in working with others. The Olympic Club isa group of six girls chosen on basis of ability by Miss Shope. sponsor. The gymnastics in which the mem- bers engage require precision, timing, and skill developed through patient and tedious practice. They were downed by such powerhouses as Franklin and DuBois. Brookville and Class HCV Champions East Forest also gained wins from the Bolwats. In the league vompetition, Clarion dropped a game to A-C Valley. The only victory Clarion eould hoast to this time was a 59--15 decision over the Alumni. After Christmas, with an unimpressive record of 1-7. Clarion journeyed to East Brady and suffered a defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs. The losing streak con- tinued for five more games as Clarion went winless with a re-eord of l-12 and a league record of 0-6. As the first round of league play hegan. high-flying Keystone. prominent Con- tenders for the league lead, came to Clarion looking for an easy win. But Clarion. forgetting their record. mart-hed on to defeat Keystone 12-ll. Clarion was now the HGiant Killer. hut they had one more giant to kill . . . league-leading lfnion. Ifnion also fell to Clarion '13-'ll in what was vonsidered one of the higgest upsets of the season. In the remaining games. Clarion pivked up one win from North Clarion. Next year. with the loss of only four seniors and tht- rt-turn of f-ight varsity lroys. Coach Broehetti will huild a team in the hope- of bringing the f-ounty title to Clarion. The day opened on a painful note to many at CJHS as a strong Beynoldsville High School football team handed Clarionis Bobcats a 21-0 defeat in the Homecoming Day game: but spirits revived and there was a big crowd at the Homecoming dance held in the Ross Memorial Library auditorium that evening. Queen Patty was crowned by football captain Red- dinger in the presence of her court. which included: Senior attendant Barb Dinsmore, escorted by Larry Mumford: Senior attendant Kathy Mclfntire. escorted by Bill Brosius: Junior attendant Nancy Richardson escorted by Joe Staley, and Junior attendant Judy McLaine. escorted by Tim Fulton. Following the crowning. the Queenis bouquet was presented by Bill Brosius, and the Homecoming Queen and her escort. with her four attendants and their escorts. took the floor alone for the Coronation Dance. Music for dancing was furnished by Tony Cruse. disc jockey from radio station IWBUI' in Butler. Patty Kahle and Barry Reddinger were crowned in front of a huge decorated fan by Lynne Fulton. Queen of 1958. In keeping with the theme. punch and fortune cookies were fur- nished by the band mothers. Following the Prom. a prom-to-dawn party, sponsored by the senior class parents. was held in the V.F.W. Music and entertainment were provided by the 3 D's and a lovely buffet was served. Throughout the evening. various prizes. donated by the local merchants. were given away. The Prom will truly recall nostalgic memories for all who attended. For the Juniors it served as an indication of a wonderful year to come. Rev. Wlayman Champney, Pastor of the Christian Mis- sionary Alliance Church of Clarion, delivered the ser- mon entitled Cost Versus Profitf, At Commencement. the Seniors were presented with their long awaited. highly coveted diplomas, hy Mr. Eugene Callihan, President of the School Board. Class President Walter Smith wel- comed relatives and friends while Judy W7hite. The 1959 C.J.H.S. track team be- gan workouts in early May with a record number of boys participating. There were several returning letter- men and a successful season was anticipated. At the final tally the Bobcats had won one regular meet and one tri- angular meet with only one loss. As always the mainstays of the team were the seniors. Outstanding among his teammates was shot man Barry Reddinger. Although he failed to break his own county record which he set in 1958, '4Arch,, did take first place in the shot event at the county meet. Many juniors received valuable experience in the 1959 season and a fine Bobcat team is expected again for 1960.
