The players have taken their respective positions on the floor. Ability is at center, Knowledge and Efiiciency are peppy forwards, while Initiative and Perseverance as the guards defend the goal, that of Service. The referee blows the whistle, Ability jumps high for the tip-ofi'-he pivots, and Efficiency aids him against the op- posing guard. Now, Initiative leaves his guard position to run a lane for Knowledge, he leaps, catches the ball, pauses only for a second. and with a true aim, sends the ball forward, watches it circle the loop and drop in. As the game proceeds so does the game of Stenographic work. In life to reach the goal Service there must be the same dependable team work Ability knowledge efficiency initiative and perserver ance are all necessarv qualities for success With these the marks of a successful organization rn the campaign of progress are achieved The basic prrncrples of business have not changed in the past centuries but modern needs hrghlv organized business concerns and the de mand for vocational specialization requrre a knowledge of fundament als a knowledge of a special lrne and the ability to serve These pr rn trples must be applied rn equipping our selves for the business world The Bookkeeping class rs preparing for service by learning the value and method of keeping accurate accounts ard of making and analvzlng statements The Commercial Law class has been recervrng t arnrng in legal as pects of business and the use of Commercial papers In Shorthand the beginning class has completed the Manual cov errng the theory of Shorthand and rs now takrnfr up drctatron and rans scrrptron The advanced Shorthand class has completed the Gregg Speed Studies In daily work a great deal of drctatron and transcrrp tion rs being done rn addition to the reading of Shorthand rn the Gregg Writer and in Secretarial practice The class has taken the transcrrn tion tests publrshed each month by the Gregg Publishing Company The entire class has received sixty word certificates in the sixty word test twelve have passed the eighty word test and two have passed the one hundred word test The group work and reading exercises have aided in attaining speed rn wrrtrng The remarnrng part of the year will be spent rn Secretarral practice Those taking Tpyew rrtrng I and II have learned the parts and care of the machrne the keyboard and the technique of typewrrtrng They are now ty ping letters and programs Darly class drill consists of short tests with an average speed of forty five and fifty wo ds In the of ficral speed tests for fifteen minutes tpamphlets publrshed bv type w rrtrng companresj ten words are deducted for each error Forty Cer trficates of Proficiency have been earned by first year students Four for tv word silver and bronze pins have been won The advanced students rn Typewrrtrng have earned mam Bronze Sllver and three Gold Pins Darlv work consists of transcribing shorthand notes and rn wrrtrng d d ll ber that we are not rn a world where we can sit under the tree of knowledge and le the ripe trurt drop into our mouths where the Competition of Species works with ruthless energy among all forms of life from kings upon therr thrones o the weed upon the waste where he that rs not hammer must be anvil and he who will not work and serve neither shall he ea Bl RNESS H-XLE 9 'from a seed in the bosom of the sz- wrlderne s the tht ol has grown t page he perfect on of the dow r V . t , L Ct ,Y 7 ' v r 3 I ' n Y . .
