There are special moments, classic moments, that will stand out in the years to come as the best of times... Special words between friends that no one else understands. Looks, expressions and motions that send friends into laughter. Sharing joys of victories. Sharing tears of defeat. Nothing can ever erase the memories created by the essence of friend- ships. The songs, the secrets. The love, the laughter. The spirit, the sharing. These classic memories will be in our hearts always — No matter where we go. No matter what we do. No matter who we become. The Seniors played a strong game. The first half ended with the Seniors leading 6-0. The touchdown was scored by Allison Smith on a beautiful run. The Seniors held the Juniors back until the second half when Smith ran another touchdown and Janet Kneiss kicked the extra point for a Senior lead of 13-0. The Juniors never gave up and showed themselves well with a tough defense and their precise of- fense. They defended themselves right to the end and are looking for- ward to next year's game. On September 30th, 1987 the CCHS girls shed their dresses, high heels, perfume and makeup for the garb of combat. The girls were psyched as they walked proudly into school in football jerseys, sweatpants, cleats, and painted faces. It was the day of the annual powder puff game. All day long the girls displayed their spir- it. The CCHS halls were filled with the shrillness of the players' voices. With the help of the male cheer- leaders the girls marched excitedly on the gridiron. The rainy weather did not dampen the players' spirit, as the rivalry between the junior and Homecoming - Homecoming week started off with a lively display of school enthusiasm during Spirit Week. Many students left their Reeboks and Levis at home in fa- vor of plaid pants and platform shoes on Nerd Day. Tuesday, students had a chance to imitate their favorite teach- er. Wednesday, the halls were filled with crazy hats and ties. “Sit-ins , bare feet, and tie dyes were appropriate only on Woodstock Day. The annual football game had a very spirit- ed turnout with confetti and excite- ment in the air. The Clarence Red Devils beat the St. Joe Marauders with a score of 14-6. At half time, the Dancing Devilettes and the cheerleaders led the crowd to the band's rendition of “Walk Like An Egyptian . The Homecoming Court was announced, and the king and queen were crowned. The annual Homecoming dance was the perfect ending to an exciting week. “The 1987 Homecoming Queen I couldn't help but feeling like I was in some sort of dream Allot the excitement started with the parade, it built up inside of me and lasted all day. Never before had any- one ever witnessed the charm and panache of the Clarence guys in tuxedos. It all created a special mood. The Junior Class joined together to celebrate with friends. Therefore, athletics, in order to be suc- cessful must have sound educational goals and objectives, and we believe that our program meets that criteria to its fullest ex- tent. Athletics at Clarence has been and is now successful. For our students, athletics has been an introduction to success which we are sure will carry them into a happy and productive adult life. Any athletic program that is a winner will have developed some of the following demonstrated behavior in its participants : confidence, intestinal fortitude, physical conditioning, emotional control, social ac- ceptability, knowledge of right and wrong, high degree of sportsmanship, respect for authority, patience, unselfishness, and self, discipline. „ Sports - 21 FRESHMAN BASEBALL The Clarence Baseball program serves as a farm system for the high school. The boys learn the basics of baseball, team play and a sense of togeth- erness. The 1987 Freshman Base- ball Team is a product of this system. During the middle of the season, we lost some of our key players to injuries: Kim Lewis, Vicki Prit- chard, and Joyce Waibie, but with the help of our coach, Mark Layer, we still maqnaged to pull through. This year's team has just as much, if not more, talent than last year's team. It will be led by seniors Julie Bow- ers, Alissa Constantino, and Penny Hammond. Being a member of the team for five years now, I feel a part of me is embed- ded in the field at Clarence. (I've eaten enough of its dust!). Now with my senior season approaching, I look back to my first one and the changes that have come since then in my skills and my self as a whole. Through soft- ball, I’ve learned what it's like to work with people for the benefit of the whole. This season will, I'm sure, be a special one. It's odd to think that next year come March, I won't be training at Cla- rence for softball. That part of my life will have passed. But the memories will last for- ever! It took the 4 x 1000 relay against Iroquois to cap off a superlative season that was enjoyed by all. We set many school and W.N.Y. records. The school record in the 1600 meter re- lay was by Mike Garrett, Rol- lie Duttweiler, Todd Burks, and Dennis Webster. In the distance medley relay Mike Garrett, Todd Burks, Mike Hallock, and Dennis Webster broke the long standing re- cord. The 1600 meter relay team won the ECIC cham- pionship, Section Three championship and placed seventh at the state meet. In the individual events white letter and MVP Dennis Web- ster set a new school record in the 400 meters and also set a school and W.N.Y re- cord in the 800 meters. Sen- iors Jeff Brooks performed quite strong in the throwing events. Rich Walter and Paul Kulniszewski in the jumping events, Mike Garrett in dis- tance events and Rollie Duttweiler in hurdles. Track - 29 JV SOCCER The Girls J.V. Soccer Team ended their 1987 season with a record of 12 - 2. This outstanding re- cord is the result of the great coaching job done by Don Schopf and the dedication of his enthusiastic group of girls. Daily practices, which included an emphasis on conditioning and training, played a major role in their success. Excellent leadership quali- ties of the three sophomore captains, Carol Wdowka, Kim Clancey, and Liz Barillari, helped make the freshman girls feel welcome and also encouraged a winning atti- tude for every member of the team. Although the team will be losing its experienced soph- omores, the freshman with a year of training will be able to carry next year's team through a victorious season! ROW 1: J. Clark, J. Storm. D. The squad coached by Mrs. Susan Windhorst and captains Daria Glogoza, Kim Morris, and Becky Kolb led the twelve girls from cold football games and nerve racking pep rallies to rowdy basketball games. Lfter cheering for four years I can definitely say that all the time and effort has been worth it. Our coach, Mrs. Crawford, has given us the direction and support that we have so of- ten needed. She is more than just a coach, she has become a friend to all of us. She has helped to organize our squad and enabled us to hold successful pep rallies, enter competitions, and most of all, support our teams. This year Julie Abell, Heather Evans, and Denise VanBourgendien will be re- presenting Clarence at the Wilson Cheerleading com- petition. There are many memories I have that made cheering a very special aspect of my high school life. Homecom- ing week was the best part of being a cheerleader. The pep rallies and the tremen- dous school spirit added to the excitement of the week. Another high point of cheer- ing was going to Rich Stadi- um and cheering for the football team in my junior year. This year the basket- ball team achieved victory at the Maryvale Tourna- ment. Brett Chelf was the tournament MVP, he played a phenomenal game and we all enjoyed cheering for him as he slam dunked. Although there were many high points to cheer- ing, there were also some problems and sdcrifices that we had to make throughout the season. Some of them were freezing in the rain at almost every football game this year, wearing our uniforms twice a week, and the biggest sacrifice of all was spending my Friday nights in towns like Springville and Pioneer! Now that I look back over the years I have to say that it was definitely worth every- thing! I have made both friends and memories that will last forever. I will carry these memories in my heart for years to come. - Heather Evans ROW 1: R. Bugenhagen, H. Evans. J. Jividen. C. Brynes. M. Morris, L. Rondina, ROW 2: S. Penhollow, D. Heiser. ROW 3: K. The cheerleaders attended ev- ery home game for both soccer and wrestling. We worked many long hours to provide a spirited atmo- sphere for the teams and spectators. We had some of the best times of the season supporting the teams that we are so proud to repre- sent. This season we had a great squad with many in- teresting memories that will never be forgotten. Hands and knees dug into the cold mud as all awaited the snap of the ball. Under the direction of Coach Layer and Coach Di- pirro the Clarence Junior Varsity football team fin- ished with a three win, five loss record. The team was small in numbers, so they couldn't rely on size. But, most of the time the key was technique. The most valuable player award was given to co- captain Scott Dicey, and the coach's award was re- ceived by Tom Heim. Rick Clare won the best defen- sive player of the season and Brian Floss secured the award for the best receiver. Co-captain Steve Hilburger, best offensive lineman, says My most memorable mo- ment was a four way scrim- mage before the football season started. Our team was all pumped up and ready to win. When we got on the field, we dominated everywhere. Our offense moved the ball well, and our defense was invincible. For some reason, the rest of the season just wasn't the same. There wasn't any game or play that highlighted our season, but I can say that no matter the score we always played hard with lots of heart, we always had a lot of fun. ROW 1: M. Crawford, C. Led by head coach, Glenn Faust, and assistant coaches, Tom Goddard and Mark Kensy, the Red Devils ended up with an overall re- cord of 5 - 3. Even though the Devils did not advance to the section VI Rich Stadium playoffs, they played well in many games. The season was sort of a roll- er coaster one for the Devils. In some cases they played extremely well and in some games they did not perform to the best of their ability. Many of the players had very good individual seasons also. Co-captain Paul Mar- cinowski, received honor- able mention at the All-WNY level. Paul also received the White Letter award and Most Valuable Player award. Other award winners were co-captain Jim Hockwater; Best Defensive Lineman, Joe Weller; Best Receiver, Jon Floss; Best Offensive Line- man, Al Pagliano; Coach's Award, Todd Burks; Best Of- fensive Back, Sam Farten- barker; Hustle Award, and Paul Marcinowski; Best De- fensive Back. All of these award winners also received selection to the Section VI Division IV All-Star team. Good luck to the 1988 Red Devils varsity football team. This young, en- thusiastic and skilled group of players showed great promise throughout the en- tire season. Coach Pfohl worked with the players and put togeth- er a winning team. Tony Castallano. the team goalie, was brought from the junior high to play on this year's team. He is an eighth grader, and because the junior high does not have a soccer team, Tony was happy to have the opportunity to play and improve upon his soccer skills. Other players who did ex- ceptionally well this year were Todd Wangler, Jon An- drews, and Jason Parisi. These boys are looking for- ward to playing next season on JV under the 1 Coach Schopf. Finally, in their eighth game, Amherst defeated the Dev- ils. Injuries throughout the year to key players hindered the success of the team. These injuries were the main reason the team was not prepared for the game against Lewiston-Porter in sectional quarter finals. The loss to this team was heart- breaking for the Devils be- cause they gave it all they had dnd lost in overtime with a score of 1 - 0. She was there to give the girls the encour- agement and support that they always needed. She became their friend and the team became very close, they worked together as a single unit and were always there for one another. Three seniors gave their views on the 1987 season. Each one remembers the most memorable moments of this season and of seosons past. TENNIS Val Carrigan stated We had a really great team for all four years. I'll never trade the friends I've made through playing tennis. When any of us won, we controlled our happiness, and when we lost, we lost with class. I will really miss be- ing part of all of that. At E.C.I.C.'s, both the boys and girls placed second to schools of o higher decision. However, in a monumental show of Clarence running force the following week, both teams were sectional champions to quality for the state championships in Long Island. The boys teom ran well to place third in the state class B race, while the girls placed seventh. But do not despair, since the girls team returns all seven of their varsity runners to con- quer greater heights next year. The boys team will rely on the running prowess of sophomore John Hunt, Derek White and John Howell to lead the team, followed closely by junior Mike Ter- rano. Freshman Brendan Me- haffy shall have to fill a key spot in order for the teom to continue its decode-long undefeated dual meet re- cord. Girls were led by juniors Mo Meldrim and Serena Fraser who rank among the best runners in the state this year. Freshmen on this varsity team were Megan Farrell, Brigit Hallock and Rayna Skorupski. Also contributing was eighth grader Kim Hunt. With this influx of youth Clo- rence will soon be a force to reckon with. Walking into the Cla- rence Bowling Academy for the first time for a team practice. I thought bowling was an easy sport. One thing that I learned was that the slight- est mistake in bowling can be magnified sixty times as the ball rolls down the sixty foot alley. I also learned that perfection must be acquired in the mental game as well as the physical game. A per- son must know where the ball is going, especially when trying to pick up spares. But most of all, I learned sports- manship. In bowling, sports- manship is simply not a brief gesture but a unifying con- cept throughout a three game match and an entire season. Sport Stats - 63 WINTERFEST Winterfest spirits soar in the west gym. Leigh combines dress up day and after school softball for Winterfest '88. Heather, aren't you a little early for spring break? Our first annual Clarence Winterfest showed moder- ate success. The Senior class put together an agenda of various dress-up days, a softball game in the snow, sled day, a pep rally, and a highly successful Sock Hop dance at the Town Club House. Dress up day winners include, Gretchen Glauber, Heather Evans, Sue Russell, and 2 time winner Mark Pen- hollow. More student in- volvement and participa- tion by the student body would have been appreci- ated, but as always, the first time anything is attempted, improvement, and response grows, as people become familiar with something. We hope next years senior class will continue the tradition and build upon what has been started. 64 - Winterfest Nothing can be achieved without a be- ginning. The first day you arrive at high school you are overcome with a mixture of emotions: intimidation, accomplishment, fear and excitement. Part of the fun of being a freshman is experiencing such conflicting emotions. Slowly you realize that you must begin at the bottom of the pile and work up over the next four years. Friendships begin, new interests arise and memories are created. Freshman year is scary at the onset and yet by its close there is a feeling of unity and security. A class of virtually unknown strangers has begun to mold together to form a future graduating class. These beginnings deserve the word classic. The common fears and insecurities shared by the freshman have developed into a sense of confidence and belonging that will remain for many classic years to come. Ihlefeld Per. 1 ROW 1 Travis Cobb. Junior year is consid- ered to be the most difficult, but in the end it's worth the effort. This year was certainly the most awkward one. We are not quite Seniors, but we're definitely not underclass- men. Our junior worries were SAT's, afters- chool jobs, and drivers licenses. However we were able to enjoy more of the school's privileges, for example our first prom. We also begin making major decisions concern- ing our future. We are prepared to strive onto better things and fervently await the day when we become SENIORS! We will cherish our rewards of our efforts, and they will now lead us into bigger and better clas- sic moments. Yay Clarence, yay cheerleaders, yay rah Clarence cheerleaders! 84 The 1987-1988 year has been an exciting one for this Holography program at Cla- rence High School. The team consists of Mrs. Marleen Astudillo. Art; Mrs. Patricia Bradley. Physics; and Mrs. Nancy Kitchen, Project Coordinator. They have worked together to create a situation where the art and science of holography is being used as a curriculum enhancement tool. Holography which is a three dimensional imaging process with the use of a laser is currently being done with the use of equip- ment that has been loaned to us. The sources are the University of Buffalo and a grant from the HID.I. Foundation. Under the direction of Mr. Scott Lloyd from the Museum of Holography in New York City and Ms. Susan Cowles from the Royal Col- lege of Art in London, we have had the op- portunity to educate and train our team. The team then can work with the students of Clarence. By the end of the school year, students in 3-D Design, Descriptive Writing, Marketing, Advanced Photography, English 12R and AP, and Physics R and AP will have used hologra- phy as it is applied to their fields of study. Clarence is one of six schools in New York State that has been chosen by the Educa- tion Department to develop a holography program. It is intended that we will become a model school, sharing our program with others across the state. i Faculty - FACULTY The cosmopolitan atmosphere at the Clarence Senior High School can be attributed to the varied travels under- taken by staff members as chaperones for CCHS students or as independent tourists. From band trips to cultural ex- changes to academic enrichment journeys, the world has been circumna- vigated. Random reactions and obser- vations about their international exper- iences reflect the valuable impressions each teacher conveys far beyond any trip's duration. Mrs. Ihlefeld and journalism class - Thank You very much - Saga 88 My favorite travel experience was going to a small town in Southern Italy where every other person was named Nardiello, meeting member's of my husbands family, seeing the house in which my father-in-law was born, and trying to communicate in Italian. - Mary Nardiello “The coastal cities of Yugoslavia, es- pecially Dubrovnik, as well as the Adri- atic are beautiful! I met an 85 year young aunt, six first cousins, and many second, and even third cousins at an all day reunion in a tiny village in the mountains in Slovenia. It was a truly wonderful and memorable exper- ience. - R. Vehar The Soviet Union was the most un- predictable. The mystique had to be witnessed. Every U.S. high school stu- dent should be required to visit the U.S.S.R. - Rita Auerbach Mr. Anaka Mrs. Astudillo Mrs. Auerbach Mrs. Bailey Mrs. Bellus Mr. Bernhard Mr. Bogey Mrs. Bradley Mrs. Breckner Mrs. Cantie Mr. Cappello Mr. Carl Mrs. Casuccio Mr. Cerosaletti Dr Clatworthy Mr. Compertore Mrs. Corrigan Mr. Covington Mrs. Doerr Miss Dunne 86 - Anaka - Dunne At the first mornings arising in Hawaii. I opened the draperies to see the most beautiful sunrise ever seen over lush tropical flowers, other vegetation, and to hear birds with wonderful voices - and the smell of it all combined to make it incredibly memorable. - Mrs. Horwitz The strangest travel situation for me may be the sights and sounds of tropi- cal snow-capped mountains: climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or the Rowenzori Mts. of East Africa. My next trip may be the best: around the world by sea in 100 days, visiting ten countries: Spain, Yu- goslavia, Russia, Turkey. India, Malay- sia, Philippines, Hong Kong, and China, Taiwan, and Japan. - K. Kreinheder Bermuda is a beautiful island in the Atlantic with miles of white sand beaches, tropical plants, and banana trees. - W. Shipengrover In the summer of '85,1 took a James Joyce Seminar at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. I hope that in addition to the knowledge which you have gained you have learned that your accomplishments are directly related to the amount of effort you put forth. I wish you success in life after high school, not only in the classroom and the world of work, but also in your pursuit of a method to make a positive contribution to your community. Mrs. Manly Mr.Pappas A caring counselor to all, Mrs. Manly has lent a listening ear, a watchful eye and a knowledgeable voice to the young people she coun- seled during the past 21 years she has been with us at Clarence. Her students were special to her. She treated each as an individual show- ing them respect, under- standing and concern. Mrs. Manly's dedication and pro- fessionalism will be missed. Asked how many paint- ings he had done in his ca- reer, Matisse replied: I can- not remember the total number, but I remember each one, individually. A counselor's memory of his or her students can aim no higher. Mrs. Manly has been more than a guidance counselor to us. She's been a friend who we can really talk to. She also was like a sec- ond mother to us. She showed concern when we weren't doing well in a par- ticular area and when it came down to recommen- dations for college, she told the colleges how we really are Thank you Mrs. Manly for being a friend, a mother fig- ure, and above all. a great counselor. - Danton Cardoso Mrs. Manly has guided us all into the path that would lead us where we want to go. She has listened to our problems and given advice but she didn't force us to ac- cept it. She has given enough freedom for us to be happy, but never too much. She has not been just a guidance counselor; she has been a friend, a helping hand, a sympathetic ear, and a kind tongue. - Julie Borowski M r. Len Pappas will be missed both as an English teacher and theatre teach- er. His uncompromising de- mand for excellence both in the classroom and on the stage has started many of his students on the road to academic and dramatic success in life. To a man who taught us so much about ourselves while we portrayed others; a man who gave so generously of himself that we never can repay the debt. A man who always encouraged our reach to exceed our grasp. - Mike Aquino Mr. Pappas' lively interest in drama and the theater greatly enhanced his ability as an astute instructor, not only of English but of its art. He has cast an indelible mark on the English and Drama departments here at CCHS. Mr. Pappas' presence will be missed by those honored enough to have had the pleasure of working and learning from him. - Siobhan O'Mahony 92 - Dedications The faculty we are recognizing for their years in education are special individuals. They have helped to enrich the Clarence Central School system with their energy and their enthusiasm. They should serve as an example to all! My life will never be the same without you, for I carry in my heart an emptiness that no one else can ever fill. My solace is that for the few short years you were here. The various personalities allowed each devil to find his own niche in which to fit. Whether it be countless hours after school for theater practice, working for publication deadlines, selling candy or planning dances, the dedication of Clarence High School stu- dents soared. There are a wide range of extracurricular organizations at Clarence that eager students take part in. The officers of the Student Council, while fight- ing for student rights, were often delayed. MOCK TRIAL The Clarence Mock Trial team is the only high school academic team. The members spent many hours preparing a civil case for argument against another school court. These seniors had the opportunity to put their years of academic study into practice in a court of law—they had to be experts in thinking, listening, reasoning and writing. In this legal debate students prepared opening statements, direct and cross examina- tion, and summations. JAZZ ENSEMBLE Every Tuesday for two hours a small group of musicians secretly got together with their leader, Mr. Kirchoff, to form the Clarence Jazz Ensemble. This gathering produced a different twist to the Musical. Department, exposing the different tal- ents of each musician. Playing a rather exciting concert on January 21, rising up in the pit of Kleinhans, and seeing citizens of Clarence Bee-bop to the beat were some highlights. Others in the cast included Sherry Hackett, Rich Rores, Jenny Kitch- en, Aimee Riorden, Jon Floss. It was fascinating that the opening number of the musical is entitled Tradi- tion as it symbolized the main theme of the Pappas years at Clarence. As part of their activities they made visitations to local col- leges schools of education where they re- ceived valuable information about teaching and what lies ahead in the field of educa- tion. A special program was designed for students to spend a day with a teacher in the elementary, junior high school or high school. Students helped the tedcher with students from kindergarten through -12th grade. Teachers from Harris Hill Elera, Cla- rence Center Elem., Ledgeview Elem., Cla- rence Jr. High and Clarence Senior High par- ticipated in this student participdtion pro- gram. Some students prepared and gave a class lesson. Other activities included lec- tures by teachers, students teachers, ad- ministrators, etc. In its first year of existence club members were given many opportuni- ties to acquaint themselves with their future careers. Jenny Huber, Karen Jensen, and advisor, Mrs. Wutz.SADD par- ticipated in the Homecoming fes- tivities by entering a float in the annual Parade. We have pur- chased SADD t-shirts and con- structed a model of a juke box for the Nifty Fifties Record Hop, pro- ceeds to benefit needy children. There will be an entire school day focused on SADD and its goals. We will be handing out Super Sev- er cards, which will entitle stu- dents to receive discount prices from local merchants. There will be various fund raisers and activi- ties throughout the year. We also distribute the Contract for Life at special SADD functions. 114 - Organizations HARKNESS Harkness is a program that prepares students for many vocations like cosmotology, commer- cial art, data processing, auto collision, food ser- vice and practical nursing among others. Hark- ness offers preparation for careers that are not taught at the high school level. This is a beneficial option because instead of financing an educa- tion at a college or university, a student may ob- tain a professional license immediately after finish- ing the free Harkness program to begin work in his chosen profession. Juhre WILDERNESS WISE The Wilderness Wise Class and Club, with Mr. Jim Marshall, as advisor is a highly recommended class for all junior and senior students. The Wil- derness Wise group revolves around people interested in the outdoors and conservation of the wilderness. One finishes this class with a new un- derstanding of the problems and obstacles with proper wilderness camping. Camping today is not just a recreational get together in the woods. Through this course one will gain the knowledge and respect needed to enjoy the outdoors in all seasons. This year's class was exposed to a different type of camping, com- pared to any previous classes. We were subjected to extreme cold weather camping. This type of camping taught the class how to deal with severe weather and ac- complish staying warm and fighting off the ever present hypothermia, frost nip and frost bite. The students are now looking forward to their two day white water rafting trip at Zoar Valley, and a final week exam at the Saranac Lakes in the Adirondack Mountains. During this final exam the class will be canoeing the Saranac River, flying in seaplanes to examine Acid Deposition damage and visit- ing the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake. We also will be camping at Horseshoe Lake. This course teaches use to be re- sponsible and gives us a chance to show our leadership qualities, which will be useful in society as well as the wilderness. i 116 - Organizations 1 SKI CLUB Grand Island Coach Buses transported 206 Jr. and Sr. High members of the Town of Cla- rence Ski Club to enjoy another great season at Kissing Bridge Ski Resort. Lessons were given to be- ginners and they soon were all en- joying the slopes after learning the basics of the sport. Trained ski instructors also assisted ad- vanced skiers to get the most out of their ski day. This winter season group pro- grams gives the skier transporta- tion, lift ticket, lessons and dis- count coupons for extra skiing at less than half the individual gate price. The advisor of the Ski Club is Pat Gibson. [ Organizations - 117 SAGA ’88 ... OUR TOUCH In the spring of 1987 Mr. Piper told the 1988 Saga staff the guidance depart- ment was moving into the pub. When Mr. Piper showed us a room at the other end of the school filled with heavy machinery, we got worried. This is where we started the new pub, and the new staff, new ideas and new problems. Our job began in the hot humid month of July when we went door to door to businesses asking for their patronage. A few of the staff even were bussed to Gettysburg for a five day yearbook seminar in August. The year was filled with yell- ing at the computer and sometimes each other, play- ing with floppy disks, picas, and pictures. Another high- light was our Farewell to Sen- ior Dance at the Town Park. Here's to the classic cluster - Snake and Saggy! One of the greatest chal- lenges of my high school ca- reer was being the editor of the 1988 Saga. I would like to deeply express my gratitude to everyone who took part and participated in the mak- ing of the 1988 book. I know sometimes it was a long haul down to the pub, and long hours after school, but through the hard work, and sacrifice, our goal was achieved. May I especially thank our advisors Mr. Carl, Mr. McCadden, and Jill Wawrzynski who were al- ways there to answer a question, correct our gram- mar, and be a friend. I would also like to especially thank Missy Murray - I couldn't have done it with out you. Special thanks to all the edi- tors! To future editors I give these words of advice, which were passed on to me: Smile at your errors, laugh at your mis- takes, and blame everything on Mr. Carl! To the reader I of- fer you an opportu- nity to refer again to what high school life was really like in 1987 - 1988. I can only hope it will mean as much to you as it has for me. And the day you look back on all the wonderful things you have done and things you have said, they will be classics to you then. - Alisa Bono You're kidding, right Bones? These students lived with American hosts for a month and were treat- ed to many adventures such as: Niagara Falls, Letchworth Park, Homecoming, Sabres Games, and New York City. As bonds were formed and friendships strengthened, the Waters were gradually Americanized. The memories were incredible and many special ones will be held close at heart. The nine Americans will be traveling to Paris, London, and Wales for a month to complete the ex- change in April. Wales '88 will be remem- bered as the best times but What can you do? American high school is very different com- pared to my school, but still it has been a time I will remember all my life and hope I can come back next winter and see all of you again. - Karen Harding I want to thank everybody for a year that I will never forget. Take care all my friends, and drop some lines sometimes. - Torbjorn Lundstedt The year here was great. I had so much fun, I wish I could start everything again. - Lucas Almeira Vasconcellos Neto I have had the best time in the U.S.A....I have seen and done things that I never dreamed possible. - Tana Meechum I find the people, here in Clarence, to be very warm, friendly, and ever ready to wel- come newcomers to their community. - Evelyn Satyono Altogether it was a wonderful experience and I'm sure I'll come back some time. - Henrik Kreft Clarence High School is a very nice school and the students are also very nice. (onyUZUi CATHY: Cath, are you typing in sports articles or are you figuring out the advantages of you and Missy buying a car to go home early? Thank you very much for ail the hours you spent hunched over the computer - you'll never see it again. Your perfectionism has paid off! EVE SIOBHAN: Your literary con- tributions have sparked the 1988 Saga. They were beautiful and added meaning to the book. Thank you very much for sharing your talent with us! JILL KELLY: I always knew I could count on you for last minute pro- jects. Kelly, you have wonderful talent and I'm glad we were able to use it in the Saga. Jill, thank you for always dealing with the mon- ey, pay orders, and bills with a friendly smile. JOYCE KIM: See, the cropper can be your friend! A special thanks to you for the terrific un- derclassmen section. You must also be congratulated for your fine efforts on the sports sections. Good luck next year, and remem- ber, smile when you say year- book! KATIE: Thanks so much for all your invaluable time and effort in the sensational organization sec- tion! But, I can't stop there. There is no way to express my thanks for your extra help in the opening, sports, and Index sections. I'm sor- ry you had to do it three times. LEIGH: Leigh, I know you will take many memories with you from your yearbook experiences here at Clarence. Not only will you know the meaning of friendship, hard work, dedication, and orga- nization, but you will never forget Knack and Richards' phone num- ber for the rest of your life! I can always say you were there when I needed you, and you fulfilled the job of assistant just as I knew you would! MISSY: I wish there was one word that could explain all the time, effort, and dedication you have devoted to the 88 Saga. I wish I could find one word that would do justice to the thanks I want to give you. Could that one word be classic? Well, it's the last day. Saggy, and we haven't fought yet! They didn't know our classics! SCOTT: We can thank you for most of the pictures in this book because you know I can not use a camera! The lens cap and the film are against me! Thanks for helping out this year! SHERRY: When you said this was the year for patrons you were right! Thanks for all your help, dedication, and organization in the patron section! Hey, if 95 de- gree weather can't stop us what can? Thanks a lot and congratu- lations for one if the most success- ful patron drives Saga has ever seen! SPORTS: It was different, it was classic, now it's over! Thank you for helping out! TYPISTS: Just think we went all year and we never lost a file, just a computer! All your hours of typ- ing and computer work are finally over, and Saga is indebted to you. ADVISORS: Thank you doesn't seem to be a big enough word to capture our gratitude to you! The personal time and attention you have contributed has enabled us to make the 1988 Saga some- thing we will never forget. Thanks for your leadership and all your help, but most of all thank you for all the laughter, all the fun, and for being our friend! FOND FAREWELL TO A DEAR FRIEND JILL WAWRZYNSKI ALISA, MISSY AND CREW To Jill, You have worked with Saga for four years now, and without you. it would have been an impossible task Some would say that loyalty, diligence and hard work are rare qualities today. You certainly have de- stroyed that myth. Your unique quality of being able to find humor in the most exasperating situations has proved a godsend time after time. You have insisted on quality from all of the staff members whom you have come in contact with, and they have learned a great lesson from you. We wish you well in your chosen profession, and in your life. Be sure to stop back and see us from time to time and charm us with your wit. The staff of the 1988 Saga needed only one thing to make their collective lives complete - a major ava- lanche. Insanity may be redefined as volunteering to work on a yearbook. The theme of the book, A Touch of Classics, embodied the entire staff. Through many adversities, plus the normal harrowing experiences of putting together a book, the staff pulled together and this book shows the results of their blood, sweat and tears. May your lives reflect your willingness to work and love. You people reflect your own theme so well. GOD BLESS, AND GO WITH OUR LOVE Uncle Mike, D. C., and the Saga Staff of 1988. LOVE AND THE BEST IN LIFE TO YOU ALL Uncle Mike and D. C. 192 - A Touch of Classics
