Let's tell them the truth, that there are no gains without pains, that we are now on the eve of great decisions, not easy decisions, like resistance when you’re attacked, but a long, patient, costly struggle which alone can assure triumph over the great enemies of man-war, poverty, and tyranny — and the assaults upon human dignity which are the most grievous consequences of each . . . Better we lose the election than mislead the people. Adlai E. Stevenson 39 World Tour ’84-’85 Row 2: Tim McConnell, Nava Hall. Barb Hartwig Pam MacKinnon is taking the picture. Your teachers, counselors, and administrators will miss your presence, however, we look forward to following your progress in the years to come. Whatever those years have in store for you, I hope that the experience at Clarence High School has helped prepare you well. I encourage you to live your life creatively in a world of your own making. I hope that each of you cam some day leave your mark on society in a positive way and feel good about your success. I would like to share with you one of the better definitions of success that I have encountered. The author of the quote is Bessie Anderson Stanley. To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better place than we found it, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded. Best of luck High School Class and God's Blessings to every member of the Clarence of 1985. 64 Caught in the act Well you can just show you’re little trick to Mr Piper” Chivalry reborn! Why? Homecoming Is it a Geclc? No. its only Nerd Day at Clarence High. Homecoming was this year, as always one of the most memorable weeks of the year. On Tuesday some people, particularly underclassmen carried around their stuffed animal friends while wearing attire of the boudoir. While on Wednesday Greasers and Flowerchildrcn roamed the halls. Nerds were seen everywhere on Thursday. Friday, almost the entire school got involved in Beach day. Most of us remember a pair of spirited Sophs, Jeff Brooks and Don Alcssi, clad in masks, snorkels and scuba flippers as they showed the rest of the school what “real” spirit was. Pep Rally highlights included a race between fall sports teams, the flipper race, the Homecoming Court race and the wrapping of faculty members in toilet paper. Saturday began with the parade, and the Class of ’86 showed the way in the float competition. The Varsity Soccer game was easy for the Red Devils to make into a victory. A huge crowd turned out for the Varsity football game, the Red Devils played a hard fought game, but were defeated by the Frontier Falcons. In an emotional ceremony Heidi Nappora, escorted by her father accepted the crown as the 1983 Homecoming Queen. Jeff Ellis was selected King. Heidi’s court was comprised of Maria Rondinelli, Mary Pat Hickey, Tammy Lynch, Tracey Herrmann, Mike John- son, Steve Woodward, Frank Rondinelli, and Mike Neelon. The court was driven around the field by the infamous race car driver Jon “An- dretti” Palmcrton. The weeks festivities were concluded with the traditional Homecom- ing dance at the Town Park Clubhouse which was attended by many cheering students. Tammy Lynch, Frank Rondinelli, Tracy Herrmann, Maria Rondinelli, Mike Neelon, Mary pat Hickey, Mike Johnson. Heidi Napora, Jeff Ellis, Steve Woodard 76 78 On November 21, 1984, The Clarence Senior High School students celebrated the annual Sadie Hawkins Day Dance in Lil Abner’s famous West Gym. The dance gave all those “shy Daisy Mae’s” from Clarence the opportunity to invite the beau of their choice to the annual hoedown. Music was provided by the Music-Go-Round Sound. The dance was sponsered by the Senior class and was a great success. The costumes were very creative and the judges had a difficult time choosing the “best costumes.” The winners were Melissa Attenhoffer and Dave Patchel, dressed as the Cookie Monster and Big Bird. 79 Powder Puff-The Story continues Keeping with the Powder Puff tradition, the Senior Girls once again stomped the Juniors 14-6 in a game which was well played by both teams. With the incredible coaching efforts of Steve Woodward and Pete Harris the Senior girls behind Captains Napora and Lynch blocked and passed their way to a much earned victory. Sharyl Burkard scored the first touchdown for the winners on a terrific run around left end. Sue Hess tallied the other Senior score on a punt return. Under the coaching of Hilburger, Maley and Colis the Juniors ran a well organized, explosive offense, with Kelly Bestine scoring the lone touch- down. Several fans commented that they didn’t realize that mittens were part of the uniform in football. 80 8« David and Lisa Carmen Radecki, Renata Bejger, Jason Crosby, Kerry Rogers, Julie Garrett. Again this year Mr. Pappas directed the actors and Mrs. Sutherland directed the vocal music. Mr. Lehner from the Junior High conducted the Orchestra. Mr. McCadden was technical director for the production and Mr. Ted Patton designed the sets. Mrs. Bailey supervised the make-up crew and Mrs. June Fahey created and arranged the costumes. The Wilderness Wise Class is composed of nineteen enthusiastic students who share a common interest in the outdoors. We study different environmental problems and situations that exist in our nation. We learn about various outdoor activities such as tent camping, backpacking, rappelling, outdoor cooking, and proper dress in the outdoors. The course revolves around team- work rather than individual work to achieve a class spirit. Our final exam consists of a week long wilderness experience in the Catskill Mts. including two days of formal training at the Frost Valley Environmental Center as preparation for climbing the two tallest peaks in the Catskills. Our whitewater rafting trip in the spring was another of our wilderness experiences. This year our officers were Brad Usatch, Ken O’Donnell (co-presidents), Cindy Nelson (treasurer), and Robin Russell (sec- retary). All of this is possible only through the inspired leadership of our class advisor, Mr. Marshall. 9 Wiih Pam Utter as President, Theresa Furioso as VP, Robin Russell as Treasurer, Peggy Farley as Secretary and help from Mrs. Petroci our advisor, the Pep Gub enjoyed a Peppy and successful year. The Pep Gub actively participated in the Homecoming parade and camiva. This organization sold refreshments at teh bas- ketball games and wrestling matches. The club also car- ried on the annual Garence school jacket sale. The Pep Gub generated a great deal of school spirit and PEP throughout the 84-8} year. The Chorale’s 75 selected singers concluded each of the school’s evening concerts and presented daytime assembly programs at both the junior and senior high schools. In addition, they were invited to present another demonstra- tion-concert, which included solo singing by several Chorale members and reading at sight new music. This has been presented for music faculty and students for the colleges at Houghton, Ithaca, Roberts Wesleyan and Geneseo. Their wide ranging repertoire included major works by Benjamin Britten and Daniel Pinkham, folksongs, songs from Broad- way, and popular favorites. Several Chorale members sang leading roles in the school’s musical show, “George M.” and others sang in the Erie County Choir. Chorale members Barbara Hartwig, Judy Hill, Bill Crosby and Myron Deputat were especially honored by selection, after rigorous audition, for the All New York State Choir. 96 Row i: Victoria Maitland, Lisa Roper, Julie Rondina, Lisa Campbell. This year’s Student Council, under the superb leadership of President Steve Swain successfully involved the student body in many events. The year began with a great Homecoming, termed by many as “different”. Student Council also brought something new to CCHS as they adopted a foster child from a foreign country. A wild and loud air-band concert was enjoyed by many as they listen to the “crooning” of Frank Sinatra. Other events planned include a variety show, blood mobile, and a Basketball homecoming. David and Lisa, produced by the drama club in November, introduced several innovations to Clarence audiences. Much of this play was performed on a thrust or platform, bringing members of the audience right into the rooms of the Berkelv School for the Emotionally Disturbed; the setting of David and Lisa. Several scenes were presented on video tape combining media and the live theater. Abstraction in theater was taken to great heights by way of the one act plays. The Happy Journey. Pullerman Car, Hiauatha. and T. V. are little known but all very poignant and directed by members of the theater class. George M!t a biographical jaunt through the life of George M. Cohan screed as an excellent vehicle for the drama club's spring musical. Auditions were held in December (two months earlier than usual) in order to train one of the largest casts ever on a Clarence stage. A prerequisite to performing in the musical was tap dancing skills. A great sense of fulfillment was experienced by all drama club members this year, the Seniors grew reluctant to leave their theatrical activities behind them. The Makeup Crew is a very necessary part of the Drama Club. They learn the skills of applying stage makeup that turns a teenager into an old man or a young child. The Fall production of David and Lisa was a good training ground for the more lavish makeup required for George M. The members of this crew agree that “doing” makeup is creative and fun. The Red Denis' Advocate, Clarence Senior High School’s news-magazine, is published six times during the school year. Using a thematic format, the periodical’s eight pages feature sutdent edito- rials, news, interviews, feature stories, entertainment reviews, sports news and views, as well as art and photography. Printing revenue is generated from School Board funding and advertising spec selling. The staff also earns money by sponsoring a computer dating campaign each year before Valentine’s Day. In May the Staff will attend a scholastic journalism conference at Fredonia University to participate in workshops on layout, press law, sports broadcasts, and newspaper writing judging. Chrysalis, the school literary-art magazine, entered its third year of revival under the leadership of co-editors Barbara Hartwig and Judy Hill, and faculty advisor Jane Wilks. Together with their staff, they created a magazine representing the creative works of a large number of Clarence students. It takes a lot of very hard work and dedication to make a yearbook. People who are not directly involved do not understand just how many different talents must be present. This year’s staff has had the combination of understanding, hardwork, and organization enough of the time to get the job done. Although there have been tough times when pressures and con- flicts have gotten the best of us, in the end we have stayed together and made out common goal a reality. There have been so many people who have done a lot of work behind the scenes. It is these people who deserve as much credit as the people who are out in front. The many smaller jobs build the foundation, and without them, completing the yearbook would be impossible. Being involved in the yearbook staff, we have learned, laughed, and grown together and most of all, it has enabled us to work together as one to create something which will represent the years we have spent here. This book will represent us as a member of a class, a school, and a town. 106 WE THE WILLING LEDBY THE UNKNOWING ORE DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE UNGRATEFUL WE H AUE DONE SO MUCH FOR SO LONG WITH SO LITTLE WE ARE NOW QUALIFIED TO DO ANYTHING , WITH NOTHING. M What is Harkness? It is a school away from CCHS that prepares students for a variety of occupations such as Food Service, Auto Mechanic, Building Trades, Cosmotology and Practical Nursing among others. Sixty Five Clarence students attend various programs at Harkness Center this year. r What is Food Services? It is a program designed for the student who wishes to pursue a career in the restaurant or institutional food industry. CCHS is not able to teach such a program within their Home Economics program. While the program at CCHS is designed for domestic food preparation, Harkness teaches methods of commercial food preparation. We are taught to prepare a full range of foods from French Onion soup dripping with creamy cheese to Minted Peas and Stuffed Flounder. We all wear full chefs uniforms every day, and are expected to eat the food which we prepare. 109 c h e e r 1 e a d e r s Row 1 Jean Tefft, Sharon Nicolas, Kim Michenzi, Polly Martens Row 2 Monique Thibault, Heidi Napora, Maria Rondinelli Row 3 Kristen Reitz, Kara Loudenslager, Janet Haake, Nadine Natale, Lori Mangani This years twelve Varsity football and basketball cheer- leaders together made one of the most dynamic and talented squads CCHS has had in years. Under the direction of coach Ron Case, the team had another awesome season becoming E.C.I.C. champions for the sixth time in a row. S w 1 m m 1 n g The swim team was undefeated this year for the first time since 1980. The team was ranked third in western New York by a coaches poll. At the time of this writing the swim team was prepar- ing to send 11 swimmers and divers to the sectional championship, more than any other year since 1980. After the Sectional championship there are high hopes that at least three team members will go to the State championship; best bets are Enc McClaren, Chris Cabell and Dean Webster. One of the bright aspects for the future, is that the team will only lose three seniors. Jeff Naw- rot, Dave Cianciolo, and Tim Jansen. However, despite the lack of experience, the young team was able to hold most of their opponents to only a one goal win. With the improvement and progress the team made it’s not supris- ing that upon playing their last game they were able to keep their opponents from scoring more than one goal. They end- ed the game with a tie success- fully achieving recognition from a team that went on to win the Sectional crown. Thanks to all the C.H.U.D.S. The Field Hockey team in ad- dition to working the hardest, also had the most fun. 126 As the Golf club disbanded, the whole team was ready for a final shot for glory. The sky was filled with birdies and a lone eagle as Mr. Love looked on. The flags whipped in the wind as the familiar putting of the golf carts was heard in the distance, driving into the sun- set. Thus ended another round, they finished the last game, but were teeded off be- cause the season had ended. Our opponents were green with envy, but our team’s drive and avoidance of sandtraps kept us low on the score sheet and always on course. The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team had another successful season but un- fortunately lost to Medina in post-sea- son play, concluding their season. The team was led by captains Sweet and Barry, who thoroughly enjoyed pre- game meetings with certain officials. One discouraging factor was the rather minimal attendance at some games, es- pecially since the girls had great, new, spectacular, eye-catching uniforms. De- spite this, everyone had a good time and learned a lot. (No spitting on the floor! Can I.) 28 The Clarence Varsity vol- leyball team had a spectacularly exciting season of sets and spikes. With a record of 9 wins and 7 losses, our boys in red kept up the Clarence spirit. Unfortunately, the spiking devils lost their star player, Mike Ertel, to a near fatal ill- ness. They, fortunately, gained points with the help of Philip Ratzel who, rumor has it, turned down the Olympic Men’s team to score for the Red Devil Spikers. A special mention is given to Martin Slawson for his exceptional playing ability as a reserve play- er when the going got tough. Hudson Art Ettdson, the person and educator, were one and the same. Art was devoted to detail and very sensitive to peoples needs. He dedicated himself to his family and job. Art’s death has left a void that is difficult to fill. A stickler for detail, an organized man, Arthur Ettelson made countless contributions while serving a great boss. I miss him. the community at Clarence for 18 years. He was a highly skilled administrator who provided exemplary' leadership for the academic and extra-curricular programs. We miss Art and remember him with respect and fondness. I knew Art as a warm caring human being. He often spoke to me about how fortunate he was to love his work. Although he was a quiet, private person, he shared h,s feelings about the student population and staff with me. To you the students-he felt that you were the epitomy of the best teenage representation. To you the teachers and staff- he felt you were bright hard-working dedicated people. I feel very special having shared some feelings and time with Mr.E. He certainly was a terrific boss and good fnend to me. Thank You! “A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.” Henry Brooks Adams There are many people in the world who can teach facts, but it is rare to find someone who has the ability to fill students' minds with a desire to learn. Mr. Sentman has this gift and much more. He has taught us about the world around us, he has taught us to ask questions and has given us the ability to find the answers. He has encouraged and given the confidence to keep trying. All who have known him, will certainly miss Paul and Henry, the centripetal stopper and string, and of course, the immortal question So What?”. Good Luck in the future and Thank You for all you have done for the people who have gone through this school. You will certainly not be forgotten. 182 It is the morning that is the best The sun emerges, its light a life source; One sits and watches movement toward zenith, it can only be with awe, a smile emerges. Later, the sun moves to other places no wasted motion to halt the sun, enjoy the warmth; The gentleness remains, the rewards of Prometheus, There is a thought, the sun has never left, and yet will always return. I larger than my human eyes can A gigantic sea of moving peaceful, ever growing peace X'hy can’t humans learn from that they can’t ever, in the wildest Universal expansion i' imagine dream control And we all walked off to look for America. Laura Sweet, Kris Depowski. and Debbie Schwab — Sports All three of you have individual personalities, but some- how you have managed to cooperate to make an unbeatable team. All three of you have done much to provide a founda- tion for the building of SAGA. The cheerful and optimistic attitude with which all of you approach your work and the trust one can place in your ability to get the job done is something the three of you should be proud of. It is a rare combination to find, that of hard work and a cheerful out- look concerning it. Thank you for all that you have done. Mr wtr. rtSMI Pam MacKinnon — Literary You have always been a source of mystery. You have the very special ability to be an individual, and be able to relate to all people, while retaining your identity. The gift that you have for writing is tremendous and it is one you have shared with all of us. Thank you for sharing this talent, for working as hard as you have, and most of all for your support. Tracy Herrmann — Patrons You once said that there must have been a lot of confidence in your ability to be an editor. Well, there was and the job you did only proved that the confi- dence was well founded. The warmth and friendliness you have shown has made the Patrons Section a success as well as the yearbook. Thank you for being a friend. Jonathan Palmerton — Photography You have provided a basis for the fledgeling staff, by knowing what needed to be done in the beginning of the year. Your calm head with your experience involving photography kept things going when other sections of the yearbook were a little unsteady. Once things got organized, life was easier, but thank you for knowing just what to say and do in the beginning when it was needed most. David McCann and Robbie McPherson — Art You two have the gift to be able to create art instantly. This is something you may consider to be impressive, but to those of us who can’t draw a straight line under pres- sure. it is remarkable. For all the times someone has run up to you in the hall and begged you to draw something because the deadline is in two hours, thank you both for your patience. Ann Marie Petroci — Scheduling Although you have not made the Pub your third home, when somehting had to be done, you have always come through. Dependable is perhaps the best way to describe the work you have done on the SAGA. Thank you for being so dependable. Karen Wood — Organizations Many times you have been able to create a smile out of a frown, this is your gift. Laughter is a cure for |ust about anything and you have brought the gift of laughter to the Pub many times. Along with the work and effort you have given. You have also made many situations easier with your humor. Thank you for your smile, and for sharing it with others. Tammy Lynch — Copy Transfer Your beautiful smile and your sense of humor have done much to ease the tension during the hard times. The effort you put in to everything you do, and the tenacity with which you take on a job is to your credit. You took on a great responsibility, and thank you for always staying with it. Sheryl Meyer - Layout Hard work and dedication is the best way to describe you. No matter what, the fact that the layout would be done was something to be sure of. Thank you for your relentless hard work and assistance, without you we would still be back at deadline number one. «84 Love, Linda Shotwell and Jennifer Snyder Editors-in-Chief II l|ll|li|l||l|lHlllW Jjimi! mijiwmlijiwn Wj! ■■■■ 'Will iiimiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiii i l!i!l!l l l i Wlllll ll'l'l'l! :l!l!l!r(!l!l!l!l!l!l l l!i!l!l!l!hlH l l!i!l!l!l!l!l!l l!l I l!l I I I I 111:111 |l|i I I I I Mil I l:l!l!l!l hhiiiliiiH lllllllllllllilllllll lllllllalll I: I: I: I: i: I: i: I: I: I .
