We are carried through much in our worn, uncomfortable, graffitied desks — our chariots. In those vehicles we naively debate about things We are incompetent of classes (i.e. history class) ... things on which we look back and wonder we could ever hold such opinions. The school seems a fortress when I look out through the Venetian blinds into the blue muffled whiteness in winter, Then blink my eyes into the season of yellow fluorescence. It may not be pretty but it is familiar. LAF Hey Bud. comc’mere Mow'd you like to buy some swamp land in Miami?' Andrea Ehrenreich portrays juror 3 in a fit of exasperation. Dave Kcpncr in a moment of decision as juror 8. Directed by Mr. Leonard Pappas, CCHS' 1980 fall pro- duction, Twelve Angry Men was a great experience for all involved. The cast of 15 deserves a high commendation for its exceptional performance, particularly those in the two lead roles, Dave Kepner and Andrea Ehrenreich. Due to the ef- forts of many members of the student body, all aspects of the play were outstanding. The spring musical The Man of LaMancha also portrayed the professional qualities which Clarence has come to expect from its dramatic productions. The leading roles were played by Beth Roberts, Andrea Ehrenreich, Dave Kepner, and Jay Laczkowski. Dramatic Productions 17 Laborious Leadership With the installation of a new principal at Clarence Central High School, new doors have been opened for the Student Council. The efforts of this year’s Student Council may be the foreshadowing of a different type of life at Clarence Central. The class advisors play an important role in inspiring Student Council members with new ideas. These advisors are Mr. Anaka, Class of'84; Mr. Wingard, Class of'83; Mr. Neubauer, Class of'82; Mr. Hicks, Class of ’81; and Mr. Bogey, who is in charge of the Student Council officers. This outstanding group of students is selected by the student body to act as a medium of exchange of ideas between the students and the school board. In order to improve their ability in this position, many members of the Student Council attended a leadership conference in Albany last fall. What can be better to break up the mid-October doldrums than an exciting, activity-filled Homecoming Week? This year’s festivities were undoubtedly a smashing success from the very start. On Monday, CCHS halls were filled with Greasers decked out for the lunch-time sock-hop. Tuesday’s Hat Day and Wednesday’s Backwards Day proved to be a lot of fun. and on Thursday student sleepyheads ap- peared in their pajamas and robes, toting their teddy bears. Thursday night was the big night for the Variety Show, with M.C.’s Brian Shemancik and Sibby Fasen- ello. On Friday, students showed their spirit by partici- pating in Red and Black Day and the Pep Rally. That night there was the traditional carnival and bonfire. On Saturday, the Homecoming game was played despite a constant downpour, and the Red Devils whipped the Cheektowaga Warriors 7 to 6, while de- voted fans watched from the stands. 20 Homecoming Hey you guys, I'm the star! John Curry successfully executes the winning kick. Homecoming 21 Two lifeguards desert the beach to come to the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Ladies’ Choice Once every autumn on a mid-November night a transformation occurs at CCHS as the girls treat the guys to a night of fun and dancing. This year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance was held on November 26 in the West Gym and was a great success, despite the fact that there was no costume competition. However, the crowd was large as all Clarence gathered for an evening of hoe-down enjoyment with music provided by the Ozone Rangers. Partners pose for a picture prior to the hoe-down. 22 Sadie Hawkins Superlatives Most Talented — Andrea Ehrenreich, David Kepner, Beth Roberts Most Likely to Succeed — Andrew Daiber. Clarence Central High School experienced a new direction of leadership during the 1980-1981 school year, under the administration of Mr. Terry Piper. The impressive principal established a smooth transition while also instituting a series of dialogue sessions be- tween the administration and parents. Mr. Piper is frequently seen at most, if not all, school activities, thus, exhibiting his support and enthusiasm for the students. He is assisted in his duties by Mr. Paul Par- rincllo, and Mr. Arthur Ettelson. Each administrator contributes to the great duty of maintaining order, but individual responsibilities arc also assumed. Mr. Piper makes final decisions on many important matters, and coordinates the specific faculty departments. Through his actions, school policy is made and adhered to by all. Mr. Parrinello is responsible for discipline within the school and serves as a supervisor for various school organizations, including the yearbook. Mr. Ettelson organizes class scheduling and field trips. He is also in charge of school assemblies. Results of the administrators' work can be evidenced by the smooth, efficient operation of C.C.H.S. Their total efforts are an indispensable asset to the school and the community. 94 Faculty Faculty 95 Mr. Ncubaucr — History 96 Faculty Throw away those silly hats and robes and stay 18 for the rest of your lives. The Russians in- vaded Afghanistan without U.S. inter- ference and war exploded between Iraq and Iran. Massive strikes occurred in Poland and many feared Soviet domina- tion because of Poland’s resulting weak- nesses. An earthquake in Italy killed over 3000 people and injured thousands of others; millions of dollars of damage was done and various Italian-American societies, including others, sent funds and clothing to aid the victims. In Eng- land, the demented Yorkshire Ripper was apprehended and the terrorization of British women came to an end. In the United States, 1980 was a time of tumult, of change, and of united hope. Various eruptions of the Mount St. He- lens’ volcano occurred in Washington State and ash was dumped as far away as Montana. Late in June, crisis resulted after blacks demanded judicial equality by holding racial riots in Miami. The race for the presidency was in- tense as democrat President Jimmy Carter, republican Ronald Reagan, and independent John Anderson strived to become the most important leader in the United States. However, in the Novem- ber election, Ronald Reagan won by a landslide. He was inaugurated on Janu- ary 13,1981, the same day that the fifty- two American hostages were freed from Iran. Throughout their 444 day captivity, fellow countrymen united in hope for their return. In April, 1980, an unsuc- cessful attempt to rescue the hostages was staged by U.S. military helicopters. Tragically, some of the heroic officers involved in the attempt were killed. However, the new year brought further talks and agreements between American and Iranian officials. Thus, with the aid of Algerian middlemen, the fifty-two American hostages received their free- dom and returned to their friends and families once again. Late in 1980, the MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas killed eighty-four, and injured many more. 1980 also was the year when the first women graduated from American mili- tary academies, and refugees fled Cuba in mass numbers to enter the land of opportunity. 102 A Look Back ... As during every year many famous personalities passed away. Among them were: William O. Douglas (81) — He had served 36 years as a Supreme Court Justice and fought for the rights of individuals. Jimmy Durante (86) — He entertained Americans for nearly 65 years. Alfred Hitchcock (80) — He created more than 53 films of mystery and suspense. Alice Roosevelt Longworth (96) — She was the eldest daughter of President Theadore and wife of House Speaker Nicholas Longworth. George Meany (85) — A tough labor chief who headed the AFL-CIO for 24 years. Steve McQueen (50) — He was a popular actor and philanthropist. Jesse Owens (66) — He was a black track and field star who won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Jean-PaulSatre(lA) — A French philosopher whose beliefs included Existentialism, Communism and Maoism. Deaths Peter Sellers (54) — A British comic-actor who gained fame as Dr. Clouseau in “Pink Panther” films. Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, (60) — Ruler who chose to make Iran a modern state using imperious tactics. In 1979, the “white revolution forced him into exile. Josip Broz Tito (87) — Ruler of Yugoslavia for 35 years. Talking Proud The 1980-1981 school year experienced changes in Western New York, as well as the rest of the world. In Buffalo, construc- tion commenced on the new mass-transit monorail system, the Buffalo Bills became popular in football, and citizens began talking proud.” Clarence underwent physical changes as the Parker school was demolished and a new Senior Citizens Center was begun on Thompson Road. At C.C.H.S., principal Dr. Eugene Small retired and was replaced by Mr. Terry Piper. Clarence varsity foot- ball players were victorious as they won the section VI playoffs at Rich Stadium. In all, 1980-81 was a very productive year! Athlete’s Corner As an Olympic year. 1980 was certainly unique. For political reasons, the United States and various other countries did not participate. Thus, the USSR won the majority of the Olympic gold medals. In the world series, the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed for the first lime ever as they defeated the Kansas City Royals. Sugar Ray Leonard overtook Roberto Duran to become the new Welterweight boxing champion and Bjorn Borg won his fifth straight Wimbledon tennis championship. In football, Buffalo's own Bills played one of their best seasons ever. Unfortunately they did not get through the playoffs. The Super Bowl was exciting as the Oakland Raid- ers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10. A Look Back 103 Tragedy On December 8, 1980, John Lennon, former member of the Beatles, was mur- dered by a demented fan outside his home in New York City. For weeks, admirers mourned the death of their favorite musi- cian who had transmitted his ideas on peace and love to an entire generation. At 2:00 p.m., on Sunday December 14. John's wife Yoko Ono, and thousands of other devoted fans, participated in a ten minute silent memorial observed through- out the world. Future Clues Best Movies and Groups In 1980-81, artists such as The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Steeley Dan, Pete Townshend, and Stevie Wonder struck the top of best-selling album lists. The best movies of 1980 were The Elephant Man. The Empire Strikes Back. Ordinary People and Raging Bull. In television, J.R. Ewing a character on “Dallas,” captured the attention of billions. Americans specu- lated about Who shot J.R.?” for more than three months. Many scientific developments occurred during 1980-81. The Voyager II journeyed to Saturn to perform tests, while back on earth, the first cloning of a mammal was performed in Bar Harbor, Maine. The United States' Space Shuttle, Columbia, underwent final preparations and flew its first maiden voyage in March, as sched- uled. These events and others portray the in- creasing technological involvement which makes the United States one of the greatest nations of the world. 104 A Look Back MEN WORKING We Did It! This group included a wide variety of people, ranging from editors, who clamored for haste and efficiency to meet deadlines, to the sincere people who just happened to stop by. Frequently, the “drop-ins“ were forcefully encouraged to enter the wonderful world of frustrations and laughter necessary to create the Saga. The 1981 yearbook is a conglomeration of talent, exhaustion, patience and immense dedication on the part of the staff and especially the editors. It is hoped that the time sacrificed on this publication will prove to be worthwhile. 106 Saga Slaff Trial and Error Trident Staff: Front Row: Beth Solem. Sue Wolfe. Ann Baumer. The Trident Weekly, run by Lauren Jonas, Ann Baumer and Kelly Wack, distributed several issues during the year, with topics ranging from the death of former Beatle John Lennon to letters from Santa Claus. The Trident Monthly, under the direction of Tom Ericson experienced difficulty in publishing newspaper issues. Hopefully, next year, the Trident will be more successful. In keeping with their interest in journalism, members of the staff attended the Columbia University Student Press Association Conference in New York City, so that they could turn out a better, well-informed paper in the future. After being selected at tryouts, each member must be willing to work hard. A cheerleader must combine the enthusiasm and spirit of a crowd into energy for the sport in action. The responsibility for the organization and leadership of the squad is assumed by the captain and co-captains of each team. Made up of a number of junior and senior girls, the Varsity squad encourages the efforts of the Varsity football and basketball teams. Throughout the season, the squad was led by captain, Cheryl Slawson and co-captain, Kathy Irr; indispensable coaching was provided by advisor, Mrs. Webber. The team had tryouts early in the school year, when thirteen “hopefuls attempted to make the squad. The team now includes eight crazy guys with loud mouths that they use to voice their support of the girls’ team. Thanks to the efforts of this committee, all at CCHS had a spirit-lifting, crazy week. Library Aides: From Row: Sue Mowatl, Joan Rew, Debbie Proffit, Pam Paul, Kathy Wright. Al- though the average student sees these people only checking I.D. cards and making attendance re- ports, they have various other re- sponsibilites; by arranging, sort- ing, and replacing books, the li- brary workers contribute to the up- keep and organization of the li- brary. These students deserve to be commended for all their devoted volunteer work. Five days a week, director, Robert Vehar, can be found hopping about giving crazy analogies to his en- thusiastic Mixed Chorus students. The group made its debut this winter in December Contrasts; a concert comprised of the Chamber Singers, Chorale and the Mixed Chorus. The Mixed Chorus sang “What is this Fragrance” an old French folk song, “Alleluiah”, J.S. Bach, “Any Time of the Year” a Hebrew Folk song, and the classic “Do you Hear What I Hear?” They also performed concerts during April and May. ... Sing a Song Chamber Singers is a group open to Cho- ral members only. The Chamber singers consist of about thirty students who per- form music specifically designed for the small ensemble. Under the direction of Mr. Vehar, this group sings at major concerts and performs various music from the Re- naissance and 20th century periods. In March of this year, they traveled with the Choral to Ithaca College where they sang for interested music students. The members of this group have vocal and musical talents as well as the ability to sight read. Chamber Singers: From Row: Amy Swartz, Kris Ulrich, Sue LiBassi. Row 2: Lori Ford, Beth Roberts. The Best To be chosen as a member of an All-State Choir, Band, or Orchestra, from the many hopefuls from all over New York, is a great honor — but it does entail a lot of work. Each of the applicants must prepare a difficult solo and must sharpen their sight-reading skills to perfec- tion. Led by president, Nancy Schaffer, and Vice President, Dave Wright, this year's varsity athletes, gained needed funds by mor- al support. Varsity athletes raised money over the course of the year which enabled them to compete in sectional and state events. Other projects included bake and candy sales, a football raffle, new athletic equip- ment, athlete of the year awards, and a new sound system in the school gymnasium. Again it has been a successful year for our athletes. They deserve much recognition for their leadership and determination that has given CCHS a reputation of athletic excel- lence. She enjoyed the scenery but she never let go of her dreams. She smiled ... so she could bathe in the beauty of others. She never lost hope or faith when hitting the bumps— but she stood ready for more, determined to get over them. When the rain came and her path looked gray she always looked over the clouds. Many crossed her path and even walked with her and they know as I do how courageous and how beautiful one person can be on a path so hard to follow. Now her path is at an end ... but her memory, so beautiful, lives on forever ...
