A new addition to Homecoming Week, hat-day” proved to be quite successful. Homecoming Queen and King Candy Owen and Tony Sineni. The Last Hurrah!” 8 Homecoming This year's Homecoming week proved to be one of the most successful Clarence has seen in years. Monday started off the week with the Baby Photo Contest of the Varsity Football Team. Wednesday included the new installation of 60’s day, while the evening provided the entertainment of the Variety Show. Thursday brought about the success of a new idea — hatday. The festivities continued right through Friday with the Pep Breakfast, Pep Rally, red black day, and the carnival and concert at night. The Climax came after the Homecoming Parade with the Clarence Varsity Football De- vils defeating Iroquois by the score of 7-0. The week con- cluded Saturday evening with the fun of the Homecoming Dance at the Town Park Clubhouse. The Junior class makes last minute preparations for their Homecoming float. Anyone care for a tango? Homecoming 9 CCHS Presents: The Miracle Worker Flower Drum Song Will McClaren - the actor. Ron Guido in his role from The Miracle Worker. Contrary to popular belief, not all stars are on Broadway. We have a very sizable contingent of talent right here in Clarence High School. These “aspiring actors” and starving artists” showcase their special abilities in two Drama Club sponsored productions each year: a straight play in the fall and a musical play each spring. Over the years director Len Pappas and his troupe have won wide recognition for the artis- tic excellence of the shows. 1979-80’s offerings were no exception. The Miracle Worker was presented in the autumn of the year, with Amy Worden as Anne Sullivan and Linda Saffire as Helen. Candy Owen, Will McClaren, Tim Markey and Dale Miller also had major roles. All who saw it agreed that that this sensitive and demanding work was very well done indeed. The musical was Flower Drum Song. The sto- ry of three generations of Chinese Americans in the 1950’s. Lead roles were protrayed by Tim McKinney, Candy Owen, Rob Voltz, Andrea Eh- renrich, Laura Aikin, Becky Aikin, Tim Markey and Will McClaren. For all concerned, the shows were truly a labour of love, an experience that will not soon be forgotten. To quote William Wordworth, The music in my heart I bore, long after it was heard no more.” Amy Worden and Tim Markey in a scene from The Miracle Worker. 10 Student Life Kevin Dunne in his most humble moment. f-THINK THIS ISA Katie Wesoiowski, Mary Lynn Krolczyk and Michele George try to solicit patrons for the yearbook. It would be difficult to list the many accom- plishments of the man, but that is not the purpose of this dedica- tion. One does not dedicate a book to a list of honors and statistics. Dr. Small will best be remembered for his humanity and his love of the students. The familiar figure, clad in the legendary bow tie, could be seen in his office or in the halls always willing to help the students and staff. Any student who had any dealings with Dr. Small has come to the realization that he was always willing to support a worthwhile cause. He could be seen at many extracurricular activities, not just supervising, but enjoying them. We write this, not to wish Dr. Small luck on his retirement because we have no doubts that his community service will continue for many years, but to thank him for his love. One more thing, Dr. Small, we hope that the fishing is always great! Dedication 93 The vice principals, Mr. Parrinello and Mr. Ettelson, serve to compliment Dr. Small in running the school administratively. Mr. Par- rinello is in charge of discipline, or at least that is what he is known for in the school. Many students are fortunate to see the other side of Mr. Parrinello as he oversees the more interesting aspects of school such as dances and the yearbook. Mr. Ettelson is the person responsible for scheduling. He handles class scheduling and also finds places for all activities, a thankless job at best. Both men serve the school well, and it is hoped their work is appreciated. 94 Faculty Faculty 95 Mrs. Gaske - History Mrs. Palka - English Mrs. Taylor - English Mr. Carl - History Mrs. Corrigan — History Mr. Neubauer - History Mr. Compertore • Mr. Bogey — History 96 Faculty Faculty 97 98 Faculty Faculty 99 100 Faculty Faculty 101 Mrs. Gibson, Mrs. Stover — Office 102 Faculty Pub People Saga Staff: Row 1: Jill Thomas, Sue LiBassi, Sue Wolfe, Pat Ganzenmuller, Michele Keating. A secluded closet surrounded by the mystery of blinking lights, loud music and insane editors was the birthplace of the yearbook Saga. In spite of unfavorable conditions, the Saga staff never failed in the coutinuous struggle of meeting deadlines in order to satisfy the students at CCHS. This year’s production was one of the most successful efforts of the past several years, thanks only to the dedicated few. The staff labored many long hours using broken typewriters and insufficient supplies to bring about this yearbook. The few thank the many for their lack of support. One of the more prestigious groups at CCHS is the National Honor Society. The nomination of students into the society usually come just before their senior year, and for a few just prior to their junior year. The nominees are judged by a panel of administrators and faculty, based on certain qualities such as scholastic achievement, leadership, character, and dedication. Acception into this society is a true distiction and honor. Advised by Mr. Bogey and Mr. Neubauer, and led by president Beth Whalen the club has led many successful fund drives in order to benefit thier annual jaunt to Toronto each spring. Several members of the society received the doubly honorable distinction of becoming members of this years “It’s Academic Team”. This team annually rep- resents Clarence on the channel 4 high school quiz program and once again came up with a strong team led by Carol Siegel, Amy Worden, Brendan Cullinan, Molly Bray and Beth Whalen. This year the Clarence High School Radio Station, after many battles became the success that it has been in the past. It has gone through new managers, albums, programs and disc jockeys, and af- ter meeting every Wednesday morning the rules were finally set. Mr. Grisanti graciously accepted the not-so glamorous position of manager, organizing it better then the school has seen it since the program began. There was also great help from the student man- agers: Andrea Tuffillaro, Mary Dia- ber and Cheryl Myregaard. The many disc jockeys can’t be listed but those of whom have survived since September should be con- gratulated! Extra Special People For those students whose interest include the observation of nature, the Environmental Science Program was designed with that purpose in mind. E.S.P. consists of approximately 30 students and two advisers. Mr. Marshall and Mr. Ludwig. The club goes on many field trips. This year the club visited Beaver Meadows, Roswell Park and To- ronto Zoo, in order to study various environments. In September, Officers were elected, and a leadership confer- ence was attended by president Pam Stietz. Sue Stephan was elect- ed vice-president along with Wen- dy Morbito as treasurer, Kim Wil- son as secretary, and Liz Schuessler as publicity manager. Among the goals of DECA Club were two conferences where mem- bers participated in business re- lated fields. Fund raising events in- cluded two flower sales, a candle sale, and a cotton candy booth at the Homecoming Carnival. This year’s DECA Club has been one. of the most successful in its fund raising efforts. Since his arrival in Clar- ence two years ago, Mr. Rich proved to be an invaluable asset as he reconstructed the whole orches- tration system. Suc- cessful activities included the Fall Concert, the annual Kleinhans Con- cert, the Spring Concert, a perform- ance in the Eastmann Jazz Festival and various Instrument Clinics. As usual the Stage Band proved to be quite successful in the traditional Clarence tradition. Orchestra - Stage Band 123 Tuning In Concert Band Woodwinds: Row 1: Ellen Fasanello. Under the direction of Mr. Ronald Sutherland, the band fulfilled another exciting year on the entertainment line. Among various events, they per- formed their annual Fall Concert, Kleinhans Concert, and finally put it all together for the NYSSMA Competition. The Concert Band, is a very sought after organization. Every Clarence musician hopes someday to be a part of it, but much hard work is required. They also performed their an- nual Fall Concert, Spring Pops Con- cert, Kleinhans Concert, and their annual participation in the NYS- SMA Competition. The chorale, for example, is a “finely tuned” group of approxi- mately sixty vocalists who meet five days a week to prepare a varie- ty of music for their three annual concerts. They also performed for the American Guild of Organists and at Geneseo College this year. Although an audition is required for membership in this unique or- ganization — don’t worry about it too much if you’re really interested. “If you can talk,” Mr. Vehar has been known to say, “I can teach you to sing.” This year’s Mixed Chorus is com- prised mostly of freshmen and sophomores, but also includes those juniors and seniors who enjoy sing- ing. There are no audition require- ments needed for those interested in lending their voices, the only item needed for membership is an interest in music and a desire to have fun. Directed by Mr. Vehar, the group participates in three an- nual concerts. The first taking place in December, the second in March, and the third concludes a success- ful year in May. 'ixed Chorus 129 The Dedicated Few When the classrooms were em- ptied and the hallways quiet, the dedicated few came out to work in silent determination. Complaints and outcries by non-participants were an inspiration to Linda, Lisa and their loyal compatriots. The varsity squad is lead by captain George Shalk and includes three sophomores and two seniors. The co-ed Bowling Intramural season is in its second year of exis- tence after transforming from a strictly girl format. The lack of fe- male interest and the sudden rise in male interest was a factor in the change, and also resulted in an ex- tension from 10 weeks to fifteen. Thirty students along with advisor Mrs. Printup participated in the In- tramurals as they journeyed each week to Brunswick Northwestern Bowl. Mid-way through the intramurals the team consisting of Tom Cra- vatta, Dave Managni and Dennis Bischof held first place. Dave Naw- rot, Glen Knoblock, Cheryl Sele- pack and Karen Ernst held the highest averages overall. Bowling Intramurals: Row 1: Ken Knoblock. Row 2: Joanne Wetzmer. Karen Ernst. The ocean reflects the actions of men, Continually breaking against the shore As if hoping to be free itself of its boundries. Praying to be free of its cage. It reaches out and covers the shorelines; Then slowly it recedes back into its confines. Though it has gained no more than grains of sand, Its hopes never cease to exist. It continues to reach out and grasp Whatever is within its reaches. Yet desiring the objects and goals That are impossible for it to obtain.
