'J dj X T' 1 N, 2 ? 1 presented by the senior class of elarenee central hugh school elarenee new york the '60 saga foreword We, the Class of 1960, have likened our school to a tree, which in turn symbolizes the full rich life of the individual who attains his ultimate goal. The roots give our tree direc- tion and strengthg its trunk supplies the bulk of the nourishment to the growing branch which reaches out for its own pattern of growth, while our lesser branches form the other segments of the tree, supplementing its structure and vary- ing its appearance . We feel that the student-body, with con- tinuous support and guidance from the school administration and faculty fits rootsl, with nourishment in the form of vital spirit from the underclassmen fthe trunkj, with the bright foli- age and color provided by our achievements fin athletics and activitiesl, and the practical sustenance to provide a pleasant environment for growth lcontributed by the financial support of our local taxpayers and businessmenl, can achieve a full measure of accomplishment in life. As our tree grows, it strives for its partic- ular place in the scheme of life, whether it be the mighty heights of the majestic Sequoia or the fullness of a Willow. We, too, must strive to attain our place in life for then we shall be able to experience the beauty and depth that it holds. table of contents administration Seniefs athletics underclassmen activities advertising 1 f I -I 4159--a.,..4w Jy -:sw ,X . .G-In ' f., ,...'+,.. xi Qa 'a .A I ' I 4 K A In preparauon for the annual musrcal Mrs Neyerl1n does research rn the theatncal sectron of the school lrbrary The Saga Staff has searched IIS m1nd and has found no two people more deservrng than Mrs Neyerl1n and Mr Schaad to honor Wlth the ded1cat1on of the 1960 SAGA Mrs Neyer l1n 1S certarnly no stranger to anyone at Clar ence whether they know her as a teacher as drrector of the schoo1's mus1cals or as a member of the Gurdance staff The commun 1ty has come to regard her as a producer of theatrrcal performances ofthe f1rst order She has repeated PICVIOUS successes H M S Prnafore Prrates of Penzance Bloomer Grr Pa1nt Your Wagon The Krug and I Brrgadoon and Carousel, Wlth South Pacrfrc tlus year s offermg wh1ch W111 cer ta1nly be long remembered by the many who attended Mrs Neyerlin represents the lughest of standards at Clarence rn that, as a most 1m portant part of the tree of learnmg she asks for notltung less than the frnest effort on the MRS CAROLYN F NEYERLIN Members of the operetta cast recerve construc uve crmcrsm from Mrs Neyerl1n ,pf part of the 1nd1v1dua1, whether on the stage or 1n the classroom By strrving for perfec tron she brrngs out rn them an 1nner desrre not only to sat1sfy the reqtusrtes of the pres ent but of the future Unfortunately Mrs Neyerl1n 1S plannlng to leave Clarence We w1ll suffer a great loss yet we should never forget the f1ne example she has set and the h1gh prmcrples for wh1ch she has stood If at some future date she should return to our school system we s1ncere1y hope she W111 frnd that her f1ne educatronal standards have not been forgotten The warmth of her per sona11ty the ease w1th Wh1Ch she can be ap proached on any problem and the understand ing she has shown toward us are qual1t1es we shall always revere We W1Sh Mrs Neyerl1n every success and happrness 1n the future and hope that Clarence w1ll long rema1n for her a most pleasant memory of 1960 dcd1C ltts tht SAGA When one man devotes h1s l1fe to teaclung as has Mr Frederlck Schaad It 1S evrdent that he has grven much of hrmself to h1s stu dents To g1ve the student body an apprecra t1on of the beauty and meamng of musrc has been h1s goal 1n teach1ng In asp1r1ng to a chleve tlus goal he has g1ven us a chance to v1ew those rare qual1t1es of ded1cat1on s1n cer1ty and 1ntegr1ty that make h1m the f1ne 1n dividual he IS Musrc Mr Schaad feels touches the very nature of man h1s creat1ve gemus H feels that lt IS v1tally 1mportant to keep al1ve a strong interest 1n mus1c 1n a world that IS becorrung so mater1al1stic Mr Schaad s name has become synonymous with mus1c at Clarence, as he has lent hrs enthuslasm and k1ndly mren to the school s var1ous choral groups and musical product1ons and to musr cal affa1rs of the commuruty Over the past years Mr Schaad has seen Clarence grow 1nto the f1ne school that lt IS today, a school system wluch he feels IS one of the finest 1n the State He has aided ded 1cated mus1c1ans in prepar1ng for var1ous m s1ca1 contests 1n the area and has helped them f1nd the Joy 1n mus1c that he has found MUS1C3lS such as Carousel, The K1ng and I and South Pacif1c offer pleasant rnemorres for h1m, s1nce hrs work w1th the choral and in strumental group made them as excellent mu sic WISE as they were 1n actmg and staging Thus 1n many ways, Mr Schaad has de voted a share of lus l1fe to Clarence Long hours of work after school, rehearsals w1th The ftnal curtarn comes down on the many excel lent product1ons under Mr Schaad s dtrectton lR Xw FREDERICK DCHAAD groups of students, and pr1vate tutor1ng have taken away much of h1s free trme We hope lus future IS as successful as his past and that h1s patrent and k1ndly disposluon w1ll Mr Schaad or the selfless devot1on he has shown toward us all We most often fmd our talented musrcal duector Mr Schaad seated at the prano arrangmg composmg or dtrectlng 5 never desert him Clarence w1ll never forget If the roots are deep, no wind will uproot the tree. - Anonymous - Chinese Proverb A tree that has a strong root structure will sur- vive the buffeting of storms and the heat of the day. It will grow and mature, sustained by the guidance of these subterranean sinews of strength to face yet another challenge. As we, the Class of 1960, cross the threshold of the adult world, we must also face many storms, but like the tree with deep roots , we can overcome these turbulences. Our administra- tion and faculty are these roots, for they give us the practical skills, knowledge and a sense of maturity and confidence which will make us feel more se- cure in the myriad of storms and calms that life imposes in our complicated world. irijfif, 41 'VJ'-9 IX o ' 1 -dk an-'K of 'Q ' 6' Q A Q, it -A .r , Q. Its pace has been so fast that each suc- ceeding generation lives in a different kind of world The explosion of population and explosion of knowledge promise to make the next decade more challenging Our schools must prepare youth to meet these rapidly changing conditions. Our board of education and admin- istrative staff work together in planning a program for all students from kindergarten through grade 12. The board, elected by the voters of the school district, formulates policies. The administrative staff makes recommendations on policies, then administers those adopted by the board. May we extend to each of you the wish for a fnost suc- cessful and happy future. Our staff and facilities are here to serve you. We hope that you will make the best use of them at all times. 8 SENIOR HIGH .ff--K in Z, DDUL RFGISTRQIION Mr RobertT Lynch Duector ofAdu1t Education prepares for regxstrauon 9 all 1 Eugene H Small takes ume ou from hrs busy schedule as Pnnclpal to speak wuh members of the student body Among the fam11iar faces at Clarence Central two of the most outstand mg are those of Dr Small and Mr Lynch These men are pr1mar11y respon s1b1e for the f1ne reputa t1on of our school and 1ts related activ1t1es Each has hls dut1es wh1ch VII tually affect every aspect of 11fe at Clarence and co ord1nate th1s stem of our tree of educatlon Q- , lvxi 'X ' I S ,.s 51s.2 ciVf-'.,V . . . . It grows from a mere twig into a leader, the uppermost of the branches, the one closest to our eye. The Senior Class is such a branch. It is looking toward the future and is, indeed, the vibrant, living, and aspiring focal point of the tree. Each Senior will have his goal, whatever it may be, and he will reach and aspire like the green tree branch for a higher level of living, out in the vast infinite beyond. St -V , ,f. Moral Essays, Epistle I. The most important period in the life of a tree is that of its early growth and development. It is dur- ing this time that the young twig is either snapped or greatly strengthened and is molded into the basic form that it will assume in greater proportions in later years. We compare our underclassmen to this young, vigorous, growing branch and hope that through their many learning experiences here at Clarence H.S. , they will grow straight and strong and possessed of those high cultural and moral values upon which they may rely in the future. Those who are but twigs today will become the main branches of the tree tomorrow. at his 3 si w 'li '-Q i f 6 Q 1' JUNIORS The highlight of the year for every junior is the Junior Prom. A it Tall, straight and sturdy like a tree, a mighty athlete is he, Whose honors shine like leaves of gold, that crowned the victories of old. - Anonymous The growing and strengthening of both mind and body is similar in nature to the maturing of a tree. Many years are spent in striving for perfection and excellence in sports, as does the tree in growing to a masterpiece of coordination. While the tree grows from sapling to adulthood, we grow from the helpless- ness of infancy to full maturity. The tree is reward- ed in that it grows into the full realization of its gift from God and we gain our reward by the fortitude of character, mind and determination we gain from our athletic endeavors . mga W - .e 2 A Qmk X4-X ,S 1? nal, F QVN X , Q - .3,QQxi'Q'XL,4 Q 1 'my' ,V Q4 X 1 Q: . gg .. -55 Q Q fun.. f X' - X2 - ' A ' . - ,Q Q .f. He has been aided in reaching his goals this year by Vice President Roger Murray, Secretary Pat Stanton, and Treasurer Mike Stephens . Among its achievements the Student Council can list the following: establishment of the new parking program, the fostering of better school spirit, the foundation plans for a Teen Center, the extension of cheerleading, and the contin- ued support of the American Field Service Program. 110 Row 1: C.Danitz, I.Good- ridge, P.Stanton, B.Buzzard. Under the direction of Mr. Garcia and editors Ellen Bax ter and Elaine Bremer, the staff spent many hours reor- ganizing the paper. New features were added and pic- tures gave added interest. The first issue of The Tri- dent was published in October and proved to be very successful, placing first in a contest among schools of the Buffalo area. The Trident staff carried on an ac- tive exchange program with other area high schools and reporters have attended several newspaper conferences . This exchange of ideas has helped make the C.C.S. Trident a vital publication and one in which Clarence should take pride. Here we find an avid reader engrossed in the latest sports news. Our community, its people, and their occupations form the oak beneath which we dwell. We must never disregard the influence which our environment has on our lives-. In a good community our tree will grow up to assume its proper place: however, if something is lacking, the tree will wither and die. This tree is a sturdy oneg one under which we can dwell and find that which we seek. The shadow it casts will form the background for our future lives .
