September of 1938 revealed a group of lowly pawns march- ing obediently into first grade. The long and exciting game had begun. Six years later the rapidly advancing rooks awoke to the pleasant thought of being a portion of the junior high ' school. Still two years later, we were knighted upon our initia- tion into senior high school. Asbishops, our eleventh term fotmd all concerned marking time until we would, as had those before us, rule supreme as kings and queens of Clarence Cen- tral High. We have now reached our long-sought goal and wish to pass our titles on to the present bishops. We are again lowly pawns in a world where only fortitude, honesty and initiative can carry us forward to title and fortune. We now present our book of memories, the contents and remembrances of which shall be cherished by all concerned down through the years. 5 I id iii X pl xl I if -sf 2 Dedzbaizbn x 5 ,Y E J 1 MR DELBERT REPP - S '1 3.-'. NDOUBTEDLY everyone of us remembers the person who by offering a bit of incentive, a helpful word, or gracious deed has prompted us on to great- er achievements. We now look back on the zealous efforts of this person and realize their significance in preparing us for the many and perplexing problems which must tae met by each of us throughout the duration of our 1 ves. We, therefore, wish to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mr. Delbert R5-pp and do hereby dedicate to him this, our SAGA of 1950. 3 . . r. a i 4 i 3' l .. 'D f 'x. From the time of their first victory over Albion, 13 to 0, until the last day of the season and a 20 to 6 win over Orchard Park, the play of the team constantly improved. Only liberal substitutions in each game kept many of the scores down. The club finished with a record of 7 wins, no losses, and no ties. They rolled up 142 points to their opponents 57. Clarence was one of the three unbeaten elevens in Western New York, and both the coaches and players cannot be praised enough for the honor which they brought to the school. 63 DICK ANAKA Tackle Standing an 'even 6 h feet and weighing in at 230 lbs., Dick was a standout on Clarence's huge line. Stopping of- fensive passing plays before they could get started was one of Dick's many contribu- tions to Clarence's successful season. A post graduate, this was his third and last year of varsity ball. PUG BROWN Tackle This year Pug switched from 'center to tackle. The change however did not affect his brilliant line play. On offense he was consistently paving the way for our plunging backs. On defense he backed up the line with equal adeptness. A senior, Pug earned four foot- ball letters during his high school career. DAVE CHAFFEE Halfback Extremely fast and shifty Dave was a con- stant threat on offense. Although he was used chiefly as a blocking back, Murph played a lot on defense, and his fierce tackling often broke up an opponents play, that had gotten either around orthro h the line. A senior, Eis- was Murph's second year of football and his first letter. JOE EICHINGER Halfback One of our ace running backs, Joe went over for three touchdowns during the season, but his true value to the team could' be seen in his passing ability. ,One of Joe's typical games, was the Orchard Park contest, where he ran for one T. D. and passed for two others as Clarence romp- ed 20-6. Joe earned his second letter this year. JERRY LIMBURG . Quarterback In his first year of calling the plays, Jerry performed like a vet- eran. His play was consistent all year round and when valu- able yardage was needed Jerry often drove through on a quarterback sneak, to make the necessary gain. Only a Junior, he has played two years of football and earned one letter. MORT MUCHOW Guard Playing his second year of football, Mort held down one of the guard positions on Clar- ence's undefeated team. His ability to surmise coming plays helped him greatly to stop many offensive thrusts before they material- ized. Mort earned two letters while in high school. I WALT PARMENTER Guard. One of the mainstays on the squad, Walt's offensive value was immeasurable. Pull- ing out of the line, his deadly blocks helped clear the way for many long gains. Walt was a Senior this year, and it was his third year of football. DAVE RILEY Fullback One of the best run- ning backs ever to play for Clarence, Dave's versatility paced many of the teams seven vic- tories. He scored 74 points during the sea- son, 66 on touchdowns and 8 on extra points. A P. G. , Dave played four years of football. SL BERNIE SMITH -1 End One of the fastest men on theteam Bernie used his speed to full advan- tage. He scored 8 touch downs during the season mostly on passes, includ ing three in the game with Blasdell. Red did all the punting for the team and averaged an amazing 45 to 50 yards per kick. A Senior, Red has played two years of football. BOB STANLEY End Six feet, two inches tall, Bob's height helped him haul down many passes during the season. He was a terrific defensive player, and went down under all the punts to smother the opponent's safety man before he could get started. Only a Junior, Bob has play- ed two years of football. DON VALLEY Halfback ' Don's versatility can be shown in the fact that he could be used at eith- er guard or in the back- field with equal success. His play was superb and consistent throughout the season. Don was a P. G. this year, and it was his third year of football. WJ? A, llufvfllt TAM DOUG WEBSTER Center ' A center on defense - and a backfield man on the offense, Doug proved his value to the team in many ways. In the Eden game it was his play which helped pave the way for a 12 to 8 victory. His accurate passes from center, kept our offensive machine running smoothly and contributed greatly to the team's victorious season. A Junior, this is Doug's second year of football at Clarence. ggi First row: D. Chaffee, J. Limburg. R. Stanley, D. Schutt, B. Smith. Second row: Coach Bernhard, D. Nice, Mgr., J. Larkin, R. Muchow, Mgr. , VARSI TY BASKETBALL E 1949-50 basketball season has proven highly successful for the Clarence Central Varsity. Opening the campaign with a 28-21 non-league victory over Wilson, the team repeated this brilliant performance by routing Springfield 38 to 19 in their first league contest. Although the loss from graduation last year was heavy, the team has played brilliantly throughout the season to produce a record of 9 wins against 3 defeats. A league record of 4 victories, 2 losses, was good enough for second place in the Class A division of the Southern Erie County League standings, at the time of this writing. With four games still remaining on the league schedule, Clarence Central' s chances for a championship team are very good. Congratulations are in order to Coach Bernhard and the fourteen boys who comprise the Varsity Squad for the excellent record they have established so far this year. fcmfes ix Q C is CLARENCE 28 WILSQN 21 CLARENCE ORCHARD PARK 39 CLARENCE 33 BARKER 37 CLARENCE BARKER 37 CLARENCE 41 WILSON 31 'CLARENCE ANGOLA 44 'CLARENCE as SPRINGVILLE 19 'CLARENCE SLOAN 39 'CLARENCE 44 WEST SENECA 52 CLARENCE EDEN 43 CLARENCE 34 MIDDLEPORT 30 'CLARENCE SPRINGVILLE 33 REMAINING GAMES CLARENCE WEST SENECA H CLARENCE MIDDLE PORT H CLARENCE ORCHARD PARK A CLARENCE SLOAN A CLARENCE EDEN H A-Away Games 'League Games CLARENCE ANGOLA H H-Home Games 66 swf? 9 HA ,W fiiieiliv Koester. But at the A start of league competition they fell into a slump and lost their next two games. After reachinganot too conspicuous record of 3 wins and 2 losses, they began to hit a winning stride which carried them to seven straight victories. One of these was a fifty four to fourty four conquest of Springville, who earlier in the season had swamped the Clarence quintet twenty four to eleven. With six games remaining on their schedule the I.V.' s have a record of 10 wins and 2 losses. Their league rec- ord is 4 wins and 2 defeats. The game with West Seneca on February 10th will undoubtedly decide the league championship. A victory in this game will give the LV. team a good chance for the title. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Glovack, a smooth work- ing ball club was soon organized. The team lost its first game to Amherst 43 to 37, but from there went on to win their next five out of six games. The caliber of ball played by these future varsity stars, may be seen in the clever ball handling, snappy passwork and consistent shooting which frequently led to scores well above forty. At this writing the team had yet to play four games. One each with Depew and Amherst, who had previously handed the Juniors their only losses, and one each with Tonawanda and Middleport.
