THE SENIOR CLASS of PARKER HIGH SCHOOL CLARENCE, N. y. PRESENTS The 1945 OUR PRINCIPAL Last September, Mr. Carl Stamp took over his position as principal of Parker High School. He is not altogether a stranger to us, as he was our homeroom teacher during our Freshman and Sophomore years. During this time, he taught mathematics and science. The past year he has taken over his posi- tion with vigor and made many improve- ments. We thank him for his constant and help- ful work with our class. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Directors this year have made many improvements in and around the school. They have provided two new school buses for the transportation of students. A fence has been put up around the athletic field to prevent baseballs and other equipment from falling off the ledge, and due to their understanding and hard work, we shall prob- ably have a football team in the next year or two. We appreciate all they have done in the past and all they plan to do in the future. We realize it is not an easy job and that they are limited in what they can do for us, but we wish to extend our hand in gratitude and thanks. I'roni Row. S. Freeman, h. Cory. H. Payne, President: G. MARY I.ARKIN Three cheers for Mrs. Larkin for her won- derful help in our Senior year. She not only put up with us in some of our bad moments, but shared our brighter ones too. Mrs. Larkin has been our school secretary for the past two years, and in that time has handled the school books, and our class books, magnificently. So to Mrs. Larkin goes our deepest grat' itude for two swell years of service. This year as in the past, the maintenance department of Parker High has done a grand job of keeping the school in topnotch condi- tion. We more than appreciate all they have done for us, especially the help they have given us in straightening up the gym after our dances and other entertainments. Due to the constant alertness of this cap- able staff, we have always been proud to bring both visitors and parents into the school. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Seated: M. LANE, B. SUGG, H. FERGUSON. This was the time that most of us started school. We all remember our first day of school. It was one of our biggest thrills, a day we had all looked forward to and now look back upon with happy memories. Our teacher, who taught our very first year in school and whom we all liked, was Miss Spencer. She made first grade a bright place where we enjoyed coming every day. Most of our class did not begin their edu' cation at Parker High, but we are proud to say that nine of our graduates have spent their entire twelve years here. They are: Gladys Schurr, Mabel Schurr, Marion Schutt, Arvilla Sheasley, Betty Sugg, Joe Capan, Albert Hughes, Robert Payne and Webster Pohl. Hats off to them. From second grade right up through eighth grade, our class kept increasing, some leaving JOSEPH CAPAN “Joe” General Business Accountant VERA CHAPMAN “Susan” music Course music Teacher ESTHER COX “Esther” College Entrance Statistician RUTH COX Rut hie Stenographic Course Social Worker JANICE ETZOLD Jan Homemaking Course Secretary GORDON FARRON Gordie Business Course Sports Editor and some entering. Our second grade teacher was Miss Echart; third grade, Miss Grey; fourth grade, Miss Muchow; fifth grade, Miss Bolt; sixth grade, Miss Hoehman; seventh grade, Miss Schworm; and eighth grade, Miss Watson. We all finished eighth grade in June 1941 and that September many of us came to Parker for the first time from surrounding elementary and rural schools to enter our long-awaited Freshman class. Altogether there were 108 members, which made us one of the largest Freshman classes ever to enter Parker. We started the year off by participating in the Field Meet. Our cheerleaders were Harriette Ferguson and Charles Olendorf. Even though we weren't first, our leaders did a swell job of breaking us in and preparing us for the next Field Meet. That year we were quite a trial to our ad visers, Miss Cox and Mr. Stamp, who were kept extra busy calming us down. At the time we thought they were trying to enforce too much discipline, but down underneath we thought and still think they are pretty swell. By the end of the year, they had made us green Freshmen into students well worthy to enter our Sophomore year. On our list they’re right up there with the best. We started our second year in High School off right by proving we could come through We hit the top! Our President during this our second year of high school was Leon Oberacker; Vice- President, Charles Olendorf; Secretary, Rob- ert Howe, and Treasurer, Joan Sturdevant. Another highlight that year was our Soph- omore Hop. The committee did a .swell job in transferring the gym into a beautiful dance floor. We made a grand success of this our first dance. We also bought war bonds and stamps and contributed to the scrap drive. It didn't seem that we were Juniors so soon after entering Parker as Freshmen, but our last two years of high school flew by even faster than our first two years. Charles Olendorf was chosen as President of the Junior Class, Betty Sugg as Vice' President, Muriel Lane as Secretary, and Burt Witnauer as Treasurer. During this year we planned and gave our first semi'formal dance, the Junior Prom. (Not that we want to be conceited) but this dance was the best Junior Prom ever given at Parker. The gym was beautifully decor' ated in blue and silver with glittering stars hanging from the streamers and also decorat' ing the walls. Without her aid and advice we would have been tempted to give up several times while preparing it. The first of our class to leave school to enter the service was Calvin Tarbell, who joined the Navy. At the end of rthe year Charles Olendorf was taken into the Army. We're proud of both of them and miss them; our classes aren't complete without them but we realize that they are doing a job that has to be done for our country. September 25, 1944. The gym was decorated in brown and yellow and the art displayed was the only thing needed to top the occasion. Again this year another of our classmates left school to join the Navy, Robert Payne. More of the fellows expect to leave either before school is out or just after graduation. We’re proud of all the fellows from Parker who are in the service, but especially are we proud of the boys from the Class of '45 who are serving their country. March 22 and 23, 1945, the Senior Play, “Shadows In The Night, was given under the capable direction of Miss Oliver. Even though we were unable to give a play in our Junior year, our welbchosen cast proved that even in this field, we rank with the best. In fact, we topped it off with a “silent bang. There are still a number of reddetter days to which we look forward. Among them are Class Day and the Senior Ball, climaxed by Graduation. This June we are to leave, but no matter where we seek our individual careers, there will always be a place in our hearts for our Alma Mater. To the classes that follow, we wish the best of luck, and most of all we hope that Parker High will mean as much to them as it does to us. The Hi'Y, with Mr. Swales as the adviser, sponsored a hayride as well as a dance this year and are planning a Servicemen's plaque. The Service Club is the girls part of the Hi'Y. They have been packing boxes for Russian War Relief as well as for our boys overseas. This work has been invaluable and we hope that their efforts for good will continue. Front Row: J. METZ, K. Junior Cheer Leaders ♦ BASEBALL Even before the baseball diamond was laid out this year, the prospective team could be seen practicing in the gym. There were about twenty fellows who tried out for the base- ball team in late March, and on April tenth the team was chosen, much to the satisfaction of everyone. With the capable direction of Coach Hagerman and the ability of the team, they expect to put Parker out in the lead. The team is composed mostly of the Var- sity men from 1944, all of whom are very good, plus two new pitchers and four utility men. Several new bats have been bought and the players are hoping to have new outfits before the season is over. Under the capable coaching of Mr. Hag- erman, we hope to win the cup for this year and to the baseball team of next year we wish all the success in the world. ☆ SCHEDULE May 4.......................Williamsville at Parker May 11.............................Parker at Akron May 18..................Amherst at Parker May 22..............Parker at Williamsville May 25......................Akron at Parker June 1..................Parker at Amherst VARSITY BASKETBALL This year the Parker High School basket' ball team broke even on their total games with five wins against five defeats. There was more team work and better playing this year than has ever been seen on Parker's court. The team had regular practice and good equipment to work with. This, coupled with the “before game” pep talks by Coach, showed up in their games as it never did in the past. There were several varsity men from last year who showed the new recruits the “ropes,” and helped them through their first game. Due to the watchfulness of Coach and the players, there was a surprisingly small number of injuries both on the court and off. We hope that next year will be as sue cessful a year as this has been, and we wish to extend to them our gratefulness for a marvelous year of basketball and hope that next year will be as good as this one. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The potential basketball team of next year, started out in good form this year and have kept up all through the season. They have shown a remarkable sense of teamwork, have done some magnificent pass- ing and have also shown us some good footwork. The Junior Varsity had many good workouts urn der the direction of Coach Hagerman, and they played several games with J. V.'s from other schools. We hope that next year, the Varsity basketball team will include many of this year’s Junior Varsity squad and we wish to take this time to wish them the best of luck and say to them, “Do as well next year as you have done this past one.’’ 1946 POTENTIALS friends «I- l A It K K It moil SCHOOI Miss Elizabeth Bolt Miss Grace Larkin Mr. Mrs. Rudolph Bugenhagen Mrs. Mary Larkin Mr. Charles E.
