In front of the table looking very much like those three world-famous monkeys are Mary Ann Jones, Allen Fry, and Claudine Laney. Allen is trying to think of some dastardly deed to commit while Claudine and Mary Ann study two issues of the Tatler. Wonder what is tickling Martha Kay Malone and Wilson Tanner? Must be some secret joke. Joe Ed Martin is probably thinking of a cute happening at school for Joe Ed is really a newshound. Next in the row we have that most important person, the editor, Sallie Perry. Guess she is proof-reading some story. Wilma Glover and Claudia Bruce must be stumped by a particularly hard headline. That faraway look always comes when a headline is to be written. Mildred Yates is typing hard on a story that must be in by the deadline. Bettye Jo Wilhite, how come the big grin? Did you have a long story in that papers Poor Dorothy Rose. She just cou1dn't resist looking at the camera. Gwen Merritt looks busy. Maybe she is working on a headline too. Now we have the one who is responsible for getting the Tatler out on time, our sponsor, Mrs. Sallie L. McGinnis. Hey, Marie Mayberry and John Hill, are you two in on that secret joke? You both have big smiles. Well, wonder of wonders, James Michael in a serious mood! He must be checking one of his stories for errors. Wonder what Doris Anderson is looking at? Got itll She must be afraid James is going to let loose that awful laugh. Barbara Harmon is helping Mildred by checking spell- ing, punctuation, and news style. There they are. V . .. 4 CI:-W 1952 FOOTBALL SQUAD The 1952 Fighting Zebras fought their way to a successful season with one game lost, one tied, and eight won. Lacking weight and outstanding size these mighty boys completed the best season of two decades years, placing second in the confer- ence. The first game of the season ended with a 15 to 6 victory over Pryor, followed by a tight O to O tiewith Broken Arrow. The Zebras had the satisfaction of beating the B. A. Tigers on penetrations, however. In the next game with their long-time foe, Chelsea, the Red and White of Claremore High won '7 to 6. Led by the out- standing halfback, Allen Fry, who scored four touchdowns, the Zebras galloped over the Marquette Meteors, 26 to 3. Follow- ed by a 35 to 0 victory over the Vinita Hornets. Homecoming fans saw the Zebras enter the dressing room at the half, trailing 13 to 0, only to come back and down the large Nowata Ironmen 19 to 13, thus putting the boys in first place of the conference and number seventh in the state. Next to fall prey to these mighty boys were the Wagoner Bull- dogs, 18 to 9. Sand Springs seeking to knock the Zebras from the conference leadership humbled the smaller Zebras 47 to O. Bouncing back from defeat the Red and White downed the Miami Wardogs 19 to 6 in one of the rougher games of the year. Ending the season with a victory over Pawhuska 19 to 6 the Zebras became second in the conference. Pictured on the page are some of the members of this great 1952 team. The checkers give copy a final going over. 56 Joe Ed Martin, editor, looks up to see what's holding up the works, as associate editor, Martha Kay Malone, sponsor, Sal- lie McGinnis, and business manager, Wil- son Tanner, add final touches to the book LET ME SAY: Members of the '53 Zebra Staff have worked long and hard in order to produce a year-book of which they and all CHS will be proud. Pictured in the upper left corner of the page are: Barbara Harmon, Wilson Tanner, and Claudine Laney, who spent many hours gathering the advertising necessary to produce this book. Gwen Merritt, not pictured, was a member of this group and helped to sell ads. In the next picture we see Sallie Main, the artist who drew the series used on the division sheets, and James Michael, who did the hand printing for the pages. Marie Mayberry and Mildred Yates did the typing for each and every page, and any other jobs to be found. Last but not least, are the checkers, Mary Ann Jones Claudia Bruce, and Bettye Wilhite, who made sure the copy had no mistakes. John Hill, stand- ing, and Allen Fry, not pictured, did fine work in the sports section. I would like to thank the entire staff for their diligent work and co-operation and give special thanks to the associate editor, Martha Kay, and business manager, Wilson, for their co-operation and help. I have greatly enjoyed serving as Editor of the 1953 Zebra, and I appreciate, as I know the whole staff does, the faithful guidance of our sponsor, Mrs. McGinnis. No matter what the problem, she always knew the answer. I especially want to thank her for bestowing upon me the honor of being editor. I shall never for- get it.
