Who are the people of Hickory High School? Con- templating answers to this question, one realizes that the people of H.H.S. are students-youth who learn and unlearn, search and sometimes find-and they are teachers, counselors, and administrators whose lives and goals are focused on the development of youth. H.H.S. then, is her people, and these people give H.H.S. her life, her character, her personality, her traditions. These people are the essence of her past, present, and prospects. The enormity of being H.H.S. requires both variety and unity. Her people-scholars, athletes, leaders, conformists, individualists, teachers-all impart to her some of their individual personalities, giving H.H.S. its color and vibrancy. Yet this multitude of seemingly unrelated individuals is the unified com- posite of H.H.S.-ea unity achieved in the realm of youth. Despite the tact that the hopes, goals, and ideas of these people are as sundry as the people who cherish them and that many of H.H.S.'s people are chronologically unrelated, they all exhibit the intan- gible qualities of youth. Thus, these, separated by time and personality, yet united in the realm of youth, are bound together with the distinction of being the people of Hickory High School. il

ITS PHASES From the world of current events to the sweaty smell of a gym to the tinkle of test tubes-to these and many other aspects of the learning process, the people of H.H.S. are exposed each day. Responsible for these experiences are her people. For them H.H.S. has offered opportunities for the develop- ment of a multitude of interests, plans, and enjoyments. The roar of a crowd cheering its team, the multisonant realm of violins, trumpets, and kettle drums, the tedious preparation of o newspaper--these have evolved from an effort to meet the multi- faceted needs of her people, these are the phases of Hickory High School.
