ITS PAST Hickory High School's past has been a complexity of growth, challenges, changes, defeats, and victories. Her past is a record of all the problems she has faced -some with the community, the nation, and the world, others by herself. Hers is the memory of a four-teacher faculty, of bobby socks, of a new science building, of boy-girl stairs, of an open-lunch period. Tradition, too, is embodied in the past. Despite the fact that new students arrive each year, this makes them aware of what they must achieve and exceed as part of H.H.S. The worn stairwells, shiny doorknobs on ancient doors, an old clock still on the wall silenced by the new, the carved desk tops, the trophy cases- all are evidences of the past. And the walls of the buildings seem to assimilate earlier events and radiate them to create an atmosphere of warmth, of responsi- bility, of tradition. Although we were not part of it, H.H.S. reveals to us a past which directs her present and her prospects, as well as our own.
