Represented Hickory in llth Annual Shrine Bowl Game in Charlotte. TORNADOES 6-FOREST CITY 0 The I947 Hickory High eleven opened the season with a 6 0 Western Conference victory over Forest City for their new coach and former Duke star, Buddy Luper. Bob Reed bulled over the lone touchdown in the third quarter from the visitors' one, culminating a seventy-l-ive yard march from the second half kick-off. This also was the high spot of a night of neat running by Reed, who operated well from his fullback post. Gene Frye sparked the defensive play that permitted the Ruther- ford lads from penetrating into Garnet and Gold territory but one time during the whole game. That was a lirst quarter drive that pushed merely to the forty before it was smothered. Other defensive standouts were Lamar Dowda and lim Mitchell. Joe Shook with remarkable punt returns totaling an even 100 yards kept the toe of Butler, punter for the black-ierseyed losers, from getting Hickory into trouble. One delicit that kept the Tornadoes from rolling at will was penalties that stopped three maior drives and prevented many more from getting under way. Overall, however, the Hickory team opened its season in fine style. One blight on the victory was the loss of Comer Iones for the season when he broke his leg in the lirst quarter on a punt run back. STATESVILLE 19-TORNADOES 8 An underdog Statesvillc Greyhound eleven dumped the Hic- koryites in a surprising 19-8 upset on the College Field in a non conference tiff before some 3,000 stalwarts that came ex- pecting another Forest City. Bill Beck and Gene Smith led a smoothly operating Iredell team from their double-wing formation that cashed in on long marches for its victory. Hickory tallied all their points in the third quarter on Fred Lail's pass to Harry Snyder and a safety bv Bill Kendall when he tac led the Grev's punter in his own end zone after Gene Frye had blocked two successive kicks. Snyder took a Hat pass from Lail on the visitors' forty seven and eluded five men in the secondary in a beautiful exhibition of broken-field running to score standing up. With the count 13-8 in the early moments of the fourth period, Hickory got on the touchdown trail but ran out of downs on the Statesville twent . Grey and Beck went wild, with their running sparking an eighty-yard iaunt for the clincher. Bcck's pass to Davis, end, was the payoff. Page One Hundred Four TORNADOES 6-LENOIR 6 CTieD The II. H. S. gridders took up the VVestern Conference race again and fought an uphill battle to a 6-6 tie with Lenoir's T- formation Bearcats at Lenoir. A third uarter tally by Fred Lail on an eight-yard end run climaxed a lfifty-four yard drive to aydirt and tied the ball game up-the game ending that wav for the seventh time in the twenty- three year history of Hickory-Lenoir football. Dowda, trying the point from placement, booted it slightly wide to the right. Lenoir marched eighty-yards from the opening kick-off with their quick opening plays and an important Leon Clarkflfex Smith pass moving the oval down the gridiron. Bill Bower crashed over from the three for the marker. The same play by Bower was stopped inches short of the booster point, however. Frye and Richard Saine topped the defense for Hickory while Hal Deal and Dowda led Coach Troy Washam's line on offense. Deal pla ed an important role in Lail's scoring when he blocked a would-lie tackler on the two-yard line as Lail sped on over. TORNADOES I3-TECH 0 Glenn Yoder was no longer an obscure sub in the Hickory High grid machine as he came off the bench in the second quarter and spearheaded an attack that blasted Charlotte-'s Tech High here far more than the 13-O score indicates. Tech matched Hickory play for play in the first quarter and the ame seemed another slow one in the rain when Coach Luper sentgYoder into his first High School game. Five plays later Yoder pulled into the end zone on a ten-yard run after sparking a forty-yard march and a star was born. He didn't score any more touchdowns that game but he did gain IOS yards in twentv-one tries for a five-yard average. This running kept Tech in a hole that thev never got out of with their T-formation attack. Fred Lail, scored the other TD on a thirtv-yard pass interception in the third quarter. Gene Frye, who plavcd his usual alleround good game, laid a key block on passer Auten that kept the wav open for Lail's trek down the sidelines to the double stripe. Dowda's placekick accounted for the extra point. Only the work of Shrine Bowler john Hopkins kept the llickor eleven from drilling over more tallies as he personally stopper three Hickory drives inside the live-yard stripe in the last half. TOBNADOES 20-NEVVTON 2 It was Yoder again, this time the whole show with thrce touchdowns, as the Tornado vanquished its traditional Catawba County foe by a 20-2 margin at Newton. The Hickory southpaw took the opening kick-off on the goal line and ran it back to his own twenty-six. On the lirst play from scrimmage he skirted right end, broke into the secondary with beautiful blocking bv Reed, Dowda, and Shores and streaked the intervening seventv-four vards to a touchdown as the 2,000 fans gaped. Bottled up by the foot of Deb Yancey who kicked out of bounds on Hickory's one-yard line three times, the Hickory eleven failed to make any show the rest of the first half. The third quarter saw Newton march from the kick-off to a first down on Hickorv's one. There, in a titanic defensive stand, Hickory High's warriors held like Jackson at Bull Run. VVhen a fourth down plunge from the six inch line stopped, the ball lav an inch from the stripe. Ioe Shook stood in his own end zone in punt formation as Hickory took over and with a crunching block by Bob Reed clearing the way, carried the ball out to the thirtv-eight. A few plays later Yoder rounded end from the nine for his second TD, the march carrying 99.98 vards, literallv. ln the opening moments of the fourth quarter Yoder went off tackle twenty-live yards for the third and final score. Dowda went two for three in placements for the extra points. SHELBY 13-TORNADOES 0 Undefeated Shelby came down to meet the Tornadoes and went away undefeated, with another victory toward their march to ultimate Conference Championship. A Hickory fumble deep in their own territory soon after the kick-off set up the Lions. Two plays later Billv Meggison, later picked on the All-Conference eleven, went ten yards through the middle of Hickory's line to score. 'Ihe Gamet and Gold held the rest of the half and threatened as the half ended 7'0. Near the middle of the third chukker the Lions roared again on a sixty-yard march with Reynolds bashing into the center of the line from the three to count. The H. H. S. defense bottled the Cleveland County team up the rest of the way but failed to cash in on several scoring op- portunities. Yoder was the outstanding Hickory runner while Craig's pass snagging accounted for the locals' aerial gains. LINCOLNTON 13-TORNADOES 7 Fumblitis caught up with the Luper eleven on its trip to Lincolnton and t e Gamet and Gold came up on the little end of a 13-7 score in a bitter loop game. Reed scored for Hickory on a line plunge in the third quarter after they had trailed 6-O at the half. 'This was the only payoff although numerous other chances went abegging throughout the game. The Lincs scored in the first frame on a fifty-yard reverse and pass platy to Beattie, ri ht end. Their winning marker was after a sustaine march with 2Steve Gabriel, another All-Loop back and brother of Army's Charlie Gabriel, driving through the center from the five. TORNADOES 13-MARION 7 Bud Craig stepped to the forefront and was the big man as the Tomado gridders outslopped Marion's Rippers 13-7 on L. R. Field in the Mud Bowl. Craig, who broke a finger on the 1-irst play of the game, caught a Gene Fye-Harold Deal blocked punt in the driving rain on the Marion f' teen in the second quarter and scooted over for the score. Marion had previously scored and when a lun e for the bonus marker failed to click the Rippers of Mclgowdll County secondary defenders and, cluding them all, raced sixty-nine yards througlh Lake Lenoir Rhine for the winning six-pointer. Dowda made is try to make it t irteen and seven. joe Shook almost scored in the fourth quarter when he returned a punt to the five from the midfield stripe. Kirby Rader, All-Conference back and Shrine Bowler, made the loser's only score. He almost got away with a kick-off in the third zxuarter but Mr. Craig was on hand again to bring him down on I e Hickory twenty-five. Craig and John Coulter led a defense that completely stymied the invaders who had been slight favorites. TORNADOES 54-N. C. S. D. 6 Lutfier and Washam iust took it easy this time as their Tomadoes ende the year with a 54-6 pasting of the State School's Bears at Morganton in an aftemoon game. Joe Shook was the sulperstar in a day of stars as he pulled in passes from Yoder, ail, and Clyde Martin for fortytfour, twenty nine, and twenty-one yards. Harry Snyder put on the show of the year with a broken field run of sixty-yards as he left tacklers stranded like hitchhikers on a rubber raft. Seven N. C. S. D. players had a clear shot at the Hickory win back as he took a reverse from Reed but he was not to be has as he scooted in and around the defense and rode the touchdown trail. Other big boys were Reed with two TD's on line plunges, Yoder with a neat 16-yard clip through center after he had faked a pass, and Mitchell on a quarterback sneak to round out the scoring. Dowda had the equivalent of a touchdown as he toed six out of eight extra points through the cross bars. Other standouts for the Tomado machine were Harry Patton, Coulter, Shores, Lail, Martin, and of course Gene Frye with his fine defensive work. He and Reggie Monday, who was playing in his first High School game, intercepted two Bear passes apiece. The losers scored on a pass to Hudson in the fourth quarter. This was the soimdest licking handed out by the local school since they splattered Concord 58-0 to close the 1931 season. BASEBALL SCORES still led 7'6. In the third quarter Yoder threw one of Hickory's two passes of the night to Craig who snagged it in the midst of Marion's AB R H TB 2B 3B HR RBI SO Deal 2 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 Jones 55 IO 20 25 3 1 O 10 6 I.
