Arriving here we soon found out that there was more to this game of High School than we thought. Nevertheless we soon settled down, and days of our Freshman year werespent getting straightened out into the routine of school. Due to the addition of the twelfth grade, and since our class was the first one to have the opportunity of taking it, we were able to participate in what we call the annual and climaxing event of the year-the Junior-Senior-three different years. But there were no complaints about that. As we looked back into the senior year we recalled all the pleasant events during the years in dear old Hickory High and we heaved a sigh somewhat of relief and somewhat of anxiety due to the fact we were through H. H. S. and then looking to what we might undertake as we leave this school. Our paths leading from the school were varied. Some led to further education, others to various types of work. Some of our paths may cross and some may not, but no matter where they lead, we can always look back to this school, its fine faculty and all our many friends and remember the events of the school, some pleasant, others not so pleasant, and then smile as we trudge onward through the journey of life. BENNY Fox MLLTON SNYDER Page Twenty-nine 2, who Ho Begum HL In Jlwu, who Jnllow As we, the Senior Class of '47, go out into the world from a place dear to our hearts, we wish to leave behind our most cherished thoughts and possessions to others, that they might share some of the boys we have known at Hickory High. N. were made by the Hickory Chair Co., owned and operated by the LAFFON brothers, RAY and REID. The lighting effects were arranged by the HONEYCUTT-BUMGARNER Electrical Co., with the unique air-conditioning being perfected by DOLAN HUFFMAN. The meeting is being called to order by the President of the Assembly, HENRY ABERNETHY. His voice comes over loud and clear due to the installation of the public address system by AL- BERT LYERLY, BILL PHIFER. BOBBY DEAL, CLARENCE HUFFMAN, HAROLD LAIL, HAL STARR, and ERNEST ROBINSON. A few late delegates are being shown to their seats by the official pages, LUCILLE McCULLOH, FRANKIE MCNEILLY. PEGGY MILLER, RUBY ADAMS. and MARTHA CLINE, and headed by chief usher, EVELYN PETREE. The secretary, JAMES FURLONG, then reads the minutes and the meeting is officially under way. As the room becomes quiet, Reverend JOHN W. KENNIE MAE LAWRENCE. PAULINE SAIN, MARTHA IANE SELF, BETTY VVEAVER, MILTON SNYDER, BEIIY CRUMP, and BONNIE BYNUM. The issue tonight is: Whether or not the small eastern province of Newton shall be taken into the United Nations as a mandate. All is silent as the American Representative, ELMER BROYLES, begins his opening address to the assembly. Seated beside him is his chief adviser, HAROLD SIGMON. who ioined Representative Brovles bv flying from London. England. where he has iust attended a world conference. He was flown from the conference bv special pilots, BENNY FOY and VANCE BRIGHT. and their special staff of hostesses. IANELLE TRAVIS, DORIS WOOTEN. DOROTHY BRITTATN and PEGGY WILHELM. Representative Broyles, having finished his brilliant speech, sits down amidst thunderous applause. As the room returns to silence we notice for the first time the press box, which plays such an important part in the U. N. In the front of the box we see the two official secretaries of the press, ESTHER ZERDEN and NAOMI BOLICK. and BOB BE ARD of the Granite Falls Gazette, motioning to the other American reporters, NANCY POOVEY. While we have been noticing the press box, an emergency intermission has been called due to a relapse of the Russian Ambassador, who was carried from the assembly by PAUL BIGSBY and GENE LAIL, ambulance drivers for the A. The ambassador, accom- panied by his American secretary, RUBY BAILEY, has been carried to the office of Doctor TOM- MY HAWKINS, chiropractor, who has treated many of these relapses by a special liniment manu- factured at the TRUMAN HUDSON Cut Rate Pharmacy, situated under the dental ofiices of Doctors JOHN RHODES and ROBERTA COOK. This emergency was calmed by the appearance of three nurses, ONEDA MCGUIRE, MARDECIA LITTLE and PEGGY MCIVER. During this intermission we will try to tell you a little of the Hickory city ofhcials who have given so much of their time and energy to make this U. N. a success. The Modern Way of Recording Speech It is the fast, accurate machine way. Whole words, often phrases, are printed at a single stroke-and faster than characters or symbols can be written by hand. And they can be written at top speed without sacrifice of legibility. For Whether written hurriedly or slowly, there is no variation in the machine-made notes of Stenographers. The Stenograph has no speed limit. And those notes are printed so plainly and so clearly they cannot be misread by any Stenograph-er, now or years later. For Stenograph-y is a universal system. Any Stenograph-er can read and trans- cribe the notes of any other Stenograph-er. The printed notes never get cold. Everywhere, and in all fields, the demand is for personal efficiency. There is no unemployment for those who can meet that demand. The Stenograph meets the demands of business and government service as they have not been met before. Whether it be in the ofiice, in the courtroom or in reporting conferences and con- ventions, Stenograph-ers record speech better, faster, and more accurately with less effort. And whether it be letters, court proceedings or convention reports, they transcribe more quickly, more accurately and in greater volume. The Stenograph is the latest and most improved of all shorthand machines. It is smaller, lighter, quieter and it has a non-breakable metal alloy frame. If you seek employment with opportunity-employment leading to careers in business, government service or in the field of professional reporting-consider secre- tarial and stenographic work. It has helped countless thousands of men and women to preferred positions in all those lields. And consider a Stenograph secretarial course- You will be faster, more accurate, more efficient. It's with mingled emo- tions that we complete the 1947 HICKORY LOG: we are sad because we are at the end of a very pleasant experienceg we are happy because we can now come out of hibernation from our den CRoom 115 and find out how the rest of the World is living. We've had nightmares about the book coming out printed ininvisible ink. We've thought at times maybe it wouldn't even come out. VVe've made mistakes-plenty of them. All complaints can be mailed to Alaskag we're getting away from it all. If you don't have the price of a stamp, just tell next year's editorsg they may profit by them.
