To most of us, Hickory High seemed very big and a little terrifying-at first. After the novelty and excitement of registration, We gradually settled into the routine of classes and studies and progressed steadily. We began to realize a little more our place in the life of our High School and to use better our study halls and classroom instruc- tion in our sophomore year. Z Wider horizons opened for us as juniors. For the first time, We became part of the intellectual and cultural realms of our school. Members of our class led in athletics, in public speaking, in various clubs. Harder lessons were taken in stride. An outstanding class was preparing to assume its responsibility of leadership the next year. The climax of our junior year Was, of course, our nautically- styled Junior-Senior Dance. This year, as seniors, we have carried on our tradition of leader- ship. Climaxing their high school careers, seniors have led in athletics, in dramatics, in public speaking, in music CBand and Glee Clubl, and in every club and organization of our school. The Twig was far above its usual high standard and the LOG is the best ever, containing many new features. The Senior Class this year also instituted a new school event-the annual Home- coming parade and selection of Sponsors. A distinguished class has completed its high school career, leav- ing its imprint on the traditions of Hickory High. Four happy years have sunk into Time's infinite sea. But We, the Senior Class of 1942, leave behind us this pledge: Whate'er may come in future years, nothing will ever lessen our devotion to Hickory High School or to its faculty. Master of Ceremonies Cole Stanley steps forward with a genial smile and beamingly addresses the assemblage: Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen! As you all know, we are about to witness the dedi- cation of this magnilicant building-the Hickory Civic Center. As a part of thevprogranrfor tonight, an opera which I am sure will live forever-'lieginaj written by the world famous composer and violinist, Dewey Qlgns-will be presented. Already the orchestra have taken their places. although they have not yet begun the overture. Tonight the orchestra will be conducted by Robert E. Cline in the absence of the usual maestro, Mr. Floyd Huffman of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Cline, who will also serve as piano soloist, is generally accorded first place among American pianists. Miss Modean McNeely will replace him for the Iorchestral number. In the title role of the opera will be Miss Jean Jones. the Metropolitan prima donna: opposite her, Glenn Miller, promising young tenor. In the Cast, featured soloists are Helen Crosby, Flagnces Preslar, Bill-bgra Flowers, and Helen Troutman. Members of the opera's novel all-girl chorus are: JacquelirieSBfol?lfE'y Bright, Doris Dellinger. Betty Anne Hickman, Doris Hoke, Bernice Kiziah. Juanita Price, Mary Elizabeth Clay, Maenell Cline, Kathleen Dellinger. and Betty Hand. The costumes worn by the cast were designed by Helen Havnaer: the scenery was designed by Louise Hoke and Lucille Lockhart. Stage managers are Billy Dellinger and Elbert McCray. The cast was directed by Mildred Vestal and Margaret Weaver. The tuning up of the orchestra heralds the overture. Among the members of the famous orchestra-the Hickory Philharmonic-we salute the following: Elaine Dunivent, clarinet: Elsie Ruth Hall, baritone: Anna Sue Hammond, flute: Louise Miller. glockenspiel: Dorothy Shell, saxophone: Charles Sigmon, drums: Pinkie Wyant, oboe: Henry Shook. bass: Cathleen Campbell, drums: and Edward T. Ward, drums. During the minutes remaining before curtain time. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I give you some interesting information about our Civic Center. It was constructed by the Kemp Honeycutt Company. Keith Abee. George Arndt, and James Brannock being the construction engineers, on a lovely tract of land purchased from Charles Penland and Robert Bridgeman, Realtors. The plans were drawn by the Earl Duncan Archi- tectural Company and made into workable blueprints by a board of that company's architects. including Eubert Bowman, Fred Huggins, and Tom Callanan. The entire interior decoration was designed and executed by Miss Margaret Bowman, noted interior decorator. Robert Smith painted the murals which depict the growth of Hickory and which are based on material and suggestions of Miss Annerl Bivens, the poetess, and Miss Mary Ledford. the authoress. Com- panies instrumental in its construction include: the Glenn Arney Stone Company, which furnished the granite for the facade: the Robert Frye Glass Company. the R. A. Bost Lumber Company, and the Alan Thompson Company, electrical Engineers. And now I'd like to recognize some of the civic and business leaders of Hickory who are present. Of course, the municipal government is well represented. I see Mayor John Stroupe, Jr.. Fire Chief Milton Westmoreland, Police Chief A. F. Sigmon, Jr., and Editor William F. Coffey of the Hickory Daily Record, accompanied by most of his staff: Marjorie Fee. Society Editor: Donald Bradham, Sports Editor: and Jenoise Ellis. Shirley Hallman, Elmer Huffman, and Frances Pope, reporters. Among Hickory's business leaders present are: Grover Fowler, who headed the drive to secure funds for this Civic Center: Jack Inman, owner of Inman's Department Store, accom- panied by Dorothy Kennedy, noted commercial artist. and Misses Betty Baker, Doris Barger, and Lorraine Brittain of the first floor Women's wear department: Irene Brown and Ruby Brown. millinery specialists: Inez Burns, Inez Canipe, and Kathryn Correll. costume jewelry and novel- ties: and Katherine Horn and Thelma Hudson, the buyers for the firm: Drucilla Kanipe, Norma McDade, Clara Mae Lowman, and Mary Ann Lyerly of the Goldene Miller Store for Women's Wear: Oma Parsons, Annie Perkins. and Mildred Pope, switchboard operators of the Frances Price and Sue Reese Telephone Company: Jean Robinson and Worth Bolick, insurance agents: Doris Sigmon. Marguerite Smith, and Frances Veach, hostesses on P. C. A. airlines. with Pilots Darius Bollinger, Paul Brock, and Cecil Hallman: and Waitzell Austin and Garland Miller. investment counsellors and stock brokers. And what a coincidence. Another store has its staff attending en masse-the Hickory Super Market, owned by Garland Eaker, and S. T. Eckard. with James Eller, manager, and Tommy Brown, head of the meat department. Salesmen are: Leroy Hilton, Homer McNeely, John Moss, Page Thirty Bob Robinson, Coyt Truesdale, Edward Zimmerman, D. L. Rink. Richard Hoke, Barsh Kirby. Eulan Warren. and Richard Holland. There is Miss Ruth Lay, the woman chemist and inventor of a new synthetic silk. With her are the heads of her special staff of assistants: Gladys Burgin, Rebecca Chapman, and Wanda Carswell. I notice also beauticians Margaret Cody, Miriam Crump. Elizabeth Cutting, and Virginia Mae Danner of the Margaret Herman Beauty Shop, and several nurses from the Madeline Scott Woman's Hospital: Margie White. head dietitian. and Virginia White, Mary Helen Sigmon. and Helen Woods. Present also are some of the agents and specialists of the Betty Rose Yount Antique Shop: Virginia Smith, Elizabeth Sigmon, and Clara Phillips and Miss Mildred Teague, who conducts the well-known radio program of such value to culinary experts. 'The Mildred Teague Recipe Hour.' Other business leaders present are C. M. Starr, of Hudson and Starr, wh Winnie Sue Black: Charles Steele, Steele Furniture Company: Louise Fox, Madam's Dress Shoppe. and Charles Jones, of Jones Construction Company, Incorporated. Miss Margaret Fearrington, with her most beautiful models. Mary Yount. Beatrice Goodson and Georgia Oswalt: and from our national capital, Fate Shell. the noted lecturer, commentator, and drama critic. This is truly a great and noble assemblage, my friends. And every one claims Hickory as his home. No wonder Hickory is winning national acclaim. No wonder it has become North Carolina's largest and richest city. Briefly let me name some of the other prominent persons present: Miss Gladys Kingsolver. secretary, and Miss Peggy Hunt, radio actress. Corporal Bill Burcham. 5' Fullbright, and I might add. 'Colonel' Darrell Yount, lend a military note to the proceedings. However, 'Colonel' Yount is one of the famous Kentucky colonels. owner of a racing stable, and in no wise connected with the army. And now it's nearly curtain time. But permit me to call to your attention the program to be held in the gymnasium of the Civic Center next week, under the leadership of athletic director Junius Poovey. A program featuring a group of famous stars from the world of sports has been arranged. I understand that it will include such noted stars as: James 'Bud' Lail, Bobby Cagle, and Donald Greene. All-American football players: Bob Hewat. heavyweight boxing title holder, and his manager. Franklin Murphy: Charles Johnson, swimming champion: and Charles Loflin, Joe Nance, Joe Whitener, and Clive Bigsby, basketball stars. Also featured will be Colleen Seaboch, champion woman golfer: Crarleen Summey, Virginia Whitener, and Virginia Williamson, basketball stars: Miss Marie WhiS1EfTTf'hgei-Tri-ofed equestrienne: Pild YRollirg,. famous aircraft test and racing pilot: Jackson Whisnant, Eslie Miller, Hznry Lawrence, Bill Whitener, an e ton ' icis Rose Bowl football team of l945. Mr. Cline. stepping forward, takes his place on the conductor's platform, pauses for a moment, slowly raises his baton-the orchestra breaks forth into a tumult of weird but lovely music, rising, rising, blending into a mighty crescendo. Faint and far away, as if in a dream, we hear the voice of the Master of Ceremonies- this the eighteenth day of May 1960, A, D. Oh! Oh, pardon me, Dad. I must have been dreaming. And such a strange dream.-That's an interesting article in this evening's Record- What will Hickory be like twenty years from now? Maybe that's what inspired my dream: that, and listening to the Philharmonic on the radio. But that dream! I wonder--what if it should come true? Page Thirty-one .JJ P' 'A - .gf FTT7' 5.
