l'esprit Do you hear strange cheering noises in the night? Do you encounter annoying enthusiasm at sporting events? Call 1 C8005 SPIRITBUSTERS. We're ready to believe you! Once known as a peaceful, scenic intellectual breeding ground, Clare- mont High had become a seething hotbed for . . . spirit! Yes, spirit. Well, it started as just kind of a joke, said senior Bobby Pearce, and before we knew it, there were big crowds of people cheering at football games! Aviva Casanova added: lt's like people actively caring about our school! But the school was not without bolence. A select few came together to form a new and covert club: The Spiritbusters! Dedicated in body and soul to defending the weak, the sup- pressed, and the spiritless. The Spiritbusters Ccode named the Odd Squadj made their first debut on October 80th, 1987. The one-man raid on the CHS Theatre was carried out by Dr. Fang with backup support provided by Mr. Martzapan. The mis- sion was an apparent effort to thwart any potential enthusiasm . As stat- ed by Dr. Fang himself, we re- cieved a call at around 9:40 am, and so l turned off 'Wheel of Fortune' and went straight over. The situation was quickly brought under control, and no casualties were reported. However, The Spiritbusters were not without a counterpart. As quickly as Dr. Fang had organized his Odd Squad , opposition arose. Under the tireless and spirited leadership of the CHS cheerleaders and pep squad, the creme-de-la-creme of Claremont High gathered to form L'esprit. These courageous individuals led a year- long battle with the sinister Dr. Fang, seeking victory not only for them- selves, but for all. L'esprit operated undercover and out in the open at all sporting events, rallies, dances, and also during school. l always wanted to be a cheerleader, said Tracy Schneider, and l enjoy making cheerleading better for the school. ln short, there is hope fm Clare- mont High. Yes, there are those who wore pom-poms on their ears, and yes, there are those who watched the Gong Show. But where there are brave men and women ready and willing to fight passive mediocrety, there is spirit. 16 student adventure A A for the crowd - The Pep Squad Mascot llghtens the mood at a rally. A V gimme a smooch - Sometimes Mr.Cooke can't contain his excitement! A V see, you can walk on air - Anders Bjork defies gravity for the sake of spirit. fs
