Claremont High welcomed a new principal this year. He is Mr. W. Deane Wiley, formerly principal at Fontana High School. Mr. Wiley provided the forceful personality and ready-for-action character that Claremont needed so badly to maintain any semblance of order on its divided campuses. His fairness and his desire to know everything that goes on at this school make him an essential key in all school activities. Mr. Wiley also succeeded in bringing the principal's position to where it was accessible to the students, providing a link between student and principal. By putting the administrative portion of the school in touch with the students, Mr Wiley created a unity between the two factions, and thus contributed to the harmony of the school. Again, by making his presence so forcefully known and by his ability to put up a fight or back out when proved wrong, Mr. Wiley added a definite flair or verve to Claremont High.

The School Board is responsible for many decisions of policy and activities which directly concern our school, and we are grateful for the time and effort they give in making sure their policies correspond to our needs and wants. Under the direction of the new Super- intendent of Schools, Mr. John Brinegar, the Board once again provided capable guidance to the school system. Mrs Nancy Smith Mr Harry Colby, Presidentg Mr. john Brineger, Superintendent of Schools Alton Sanford, Clerk Mr Robert Stafford, Vice Presidentg Mrs. Francis Drake. Among the many vital issues con- fronting the School Board this year was the selection of a junior college district.. Board members had to weigh the merits of Citrus , Mount San Antonio and Chaffey Junior Colleges before reaching a deci- sion, The School Board, also handled the awarding of contracts for school buildings, and discussed possible plans for new library, cafeteria, music room, science room, and other classrooms. In addition, they handed down the deci- sions on many policies and activities of direct importance to our high school. 10

Counselors were on hand throughout the year to provide necessary advice to the students on such things as college, courses to be taken, and grades. This year, for the first time, grade counsel- ors were assigned to handle coun- seling duties and nothing else. This plan of having counselors Whose time was not divided between teach- ing and advising appeared to have significant benefits , as a appoint- ments and faster service were made available. In addition to the grade coun- selors , a new postion of Director of Student Activites was created. Mr. jack Orr filled this position, assuming the manifold responsi- bilities that Went with it. I-Ie hand- led all student activities , arranged the dates and places for them and also took over the position of Dean of Boys. MR MILTON BENTLEY MR.
