Martin, who recently retired from his position as principal after 33 years at Claremont High. Mr. Martin first came to Claremont High in 1930 as a coach. In the years to follow, he coached varsity football, track, and cross country, and. taught boys'P. E. , history, American democracy, civics, and economics. In addition, he acted as supervisor to the annual staff, and on several occasions sponsored the Letter- man's Club and Key Club. In 1952, Mr. Martin gave up his teaching duties to become principal of Claremont High, a position he retained until his retirement last year. He has seen the many changes , the progress , the problems , and the glories of Clare- mont High during a 33 year period, and We salute him for these many years of service. His contributions, his efforts , and his achievements are all visible in our school, even though he himself is no longer an administrator. The high stan- dards and the special quality and achiev- ments of Claremont High are reflections of his guidance during these many years. To Mr. Martin we extend our deepest thanks and appreciation. 6 We focus on Mr. Martin's life in the decades he has dedicated to Claremont High. Y LX WE Our able administration worked along with the students to unite the two campuses , and to effect the unity of purpose, unity of achievement, and unity of spirit characteristic of Clar- mont High during 1963-64. Strong administration at the top was provided by Mr. W. Deane Wiley, principal, who strove to unite the two factions , north and south. The counselors also worked together to provide the necessary guidance for all students. Secretaries and main- tenance people, confronted with the massive dilemmas of a divided school, united to provide fast service and ac- curate records of and for both campuses. The school board, too, was a steadying influence. Our enlarged faculty met the challenge of diversity head on, rising above the problems of split-campus living to prov- ide the students with the know- ledge and education so important in life. In View of achievements , enthusiasm , and effort, it can truly be said of our administra- tion that united they stand in bringing the best to Claremont High. - The School Board is responsible for many decisions of policy and activities which directly concern our school, and we are grateful for the time and effort they give in making sure their policies correspond to our needs and wants. Under the direction of the new Super- intendent of Schools, Mr. John Brinegar, the Board once again provided capable guidance to the school system. Mrs Nancy Smith Mr Harry Colby, Presidentg Mr. john Brineger, Superintendent of Schools Alton Sanford, Clerk Mr Robert Stafford, Vice Presidentg Mrs. Francis Drake. Among the many vital issues con- fronting the School Board this year was the selection of a junior college district.. Board members had to weigh the merits of Citrus , Mount San Antonio and Chaffey Junior Colleges before reaching a deci- sion, The School Board, also handled the awarding of contracts for school buildings, and discussed possible plans for new library, cafeteria, music room, science room, and other classrooms. In addition, they handed down the deci- sions on many policies and activities of direct importance to our high school. 10 Claremont High welcomed a new principal this year. He is Mr. W. Deane Wiley, formerly principal at Fontana High School. Mr. Wiley provided the forceful personality and ready-for-action character that Claremont needed so badly to maintain any semblance of order on its divided campuses. His fairness and his desire to know everything that goes on at this school make him an essential key in all school activities. Mr. Wiley also succeeded in bringing the principal's position to where it was accessible to the students, providing a link between student and principal. By putting the administrative portion of the school in touch with the students, Mr Wiley created a unity between the two factions, and thus contributed to the harmony of the school. Again, by making his presence so forcefully known and by his ability to put up a fight or back out when proved wrong, Mr. Wiley added a definite flair or verve to Claremont High. Counselors were on hand throughout the year to provide necessary advice to the students on such things as college, courses to be taken, and grades. This year, for the first time, grade counsel- ors were assigned to handle coun- seling duties and nothing else. This plan of having counselors Whose time was not divided between teach- ing and advising appeared to have significant benefits , as a appoint- ments and faster service were made available. In addition to the grade coun- selors , a new postion of Director of Student Activites was created. Mr. jack Orr filled this position, assuming the manifold responsi- bilities that Went with it. I-Ie hand- led all student activities , arranged the dates and places for them and also took over the position of Dean of Boys. MR MILTON BENTLEY MR. These or- ganizations provided another unify- ing link between school and student. The diversity of organizations covered sufficient areas to suit practically any individual's taste. People interested in chess, science scholarship, foreign languages, government, journalism, cameras, orchestra, art, business, acting, homemaking, nursing, marching, singing, teaching--and on and on and on--were able to find organ- izations to coincide with their own particular fields of interest. Faculty members generously donated their time and suggestions to the supervision and activities of the student clubs. I 4, 4, Z. Robyn jolly asked to be sent to South America, but the other candidates expressed desires for general areas, such as the northern or southern hemispheres. A committee of townspeople, school person- nel, and previous AFS students selected the four from twelve applicants. All candidates were submitted to group and individual interviews, then their academic and personal records were care- fully screened. Finally, detailed information on the chosen four was sent to the New York office L for evaluation. There, attempts were made to fit each candidate to a home abroad. This year's candidates for Americans Abroad are, kneeling, Kathleen O'Connor, Pris Davidson, standing, Linda Smilkstein, and Robyn jolly. Pew U i Row 1: G. Malan, B. McKissen, R. Dart, C. The Tigers narrowed the score to 12-6 on a six-yard pass, then tallied again on a 30-yard pass. Dave Newell preserved the tie by blockingtlie conver- sion attempt. ' Rubidoux 6 Pack 49 ' The Pack crushed the vis- iting Falcons in a devastating display of power, outrushing them 311 yards to 9. Bob Stephenson scored three times on runs of 11, 23, and 4 yards. Sidler, Stewart, Kriezel, and Simmons all scored once, Simmons' , TD coming on a 61 yard punt return. RubidouX's only score was on a 56-yard pass. Eisenhower 6 Pack 20 Claremont came from be- hind to score its third league triumph. The Eagles grabbed the first points on a short pass, but the Pack retaliated with a 60 yard pass-run play from Connor to Tracy. ln the sec- ond half, Claremont Scored twice on short plunges by Den- nis Sidler. Montclair 13 Pack 35 An 87-yard kick-off re- turn by Aubrey Simmons high- lighted this league-clincher. Kriezel did an excellent job subbing for quarterback Scott Connor, throwing a TD pass to Blackburn for the final tal- ly. The defensive team per- formed well, containing the explosive Montclair team as well as blocking two punts, one of which Larry Webster recovered in the Montclair end zone. San Marino 14 Pack 21 Ross Stewart's interception deep in Pack territory preserv- ed Claremont's victory in the opening rotmd of CIF playoffs. Bob Stephenson scored first, plunging over from the five yard line. The Titans tied the score, but a quarterback sneak by Connor, capping a 70-yard drive, gave Claremont a 14- 7 lead. San Marino again tied the score before another sneak by Connor put the Pack ahead to stay. St. Francis 27 KPack 19 An 88-yard ptmt return by St. Francis put Claremont be- hind, but the Pack went ahead on a two-yard smash by Stew- art and a 13-yard run by Sid- ler. St. Francis snatched the lead back with a 37-yard pass, and the lead changed hands twice more before a Knight pass interception and TD clinched the game. The gun sounded with Claremont in possession on the Knight one- yard line following a long pass to Sevilla. 7 1 X Q 1 E K 5 5 3 s 1 E E ,mmmwvw me-Ame:5ca:mMMums1mfs,v:wwf,. .f.fwMw9weMw,w 1.-11 i Q: 'Q .--ff ,. my wg ,f'. : ,Q ,, ., V .fm W m,f1S,ifai:wQ42ffwffwwrgrfsmmqaavzmmm,ww zmmfmwAfa7LQffWwm4 muwmmvmw-ummm- I L: W M fella, Princess Carol Deregibus Escortfjerry Webster IW? Despite the inconsistencies in scoring, Claremont got consistent efforts from many of the varsity players. A preponderance of junior and sophomore players ensures Coach jack Smith of an experienced squad next year. There were two high points in the season. First was a four -game winning streak in early February. During this time, Claremont played exciting, skillfull basketball and easily bumped off Rubidoux, Bonita, Corona, and Eisenhower. Second high point was the thrilling season finale against Bonita, in which the scoring lead changed hands every few seconds, and the outcome was in doubt till the very end when Claremont snatched the lead and held it for a victory.
