EL ESPIRITLI PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF CLAREMONT HIGH SCHOOL, CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA VOLUME 34 JUNE, I947 ,nm ,umm sr- 1' S is FOREWORD Take a look around you. Do you see a change in fhis liffle valley? Do you see facfories where fhere used fo be groves, and houses where fhere were vacanf lofs? Yes, you do. For now, once again, fhis valley has come fo fhe foreground and has fhe eyes of fhe world upon if. For here are 'fhe lands, fhe green valleys, fhe unfamed power needed fo build a 'rhriving mefropolis. So once again we are in fhe news. The firsf fime was in Fremon+'s day when California was being faken from fhe Spaniards, and fhen again in fhe gold rush days, men pushed ouf here fo make fheir forfunes and build a greaf new sfafe from sand and sagebrush,-California 'rhe sfafe wifh fhe colorful hisfory and fhe brighf fufure. Yef in fhe glory of fhe presenf do nof forgef fhaf pasf. Look back on if and realize fhaf fhe sfaunch padres, fhe sfalwarf Indians and fhe large ranchos were here long before we were and did fheir parf in developing fhis valley. ln lafer years when you read over your yearbook, l hope if will nof only recall your youfhful days of explorafion, developmenf, and parficipafion buf also fhe youfhful days of California. l 1 DEDICATIO www-HmvQMQi?r MJLA vwwqc 4-1-lava 2+-F lv M, KRW, Li High Schoo eTW comple+e 'io any of us wi+hou'i ihe inspiraiion and guidance which she gives. Vice-presidenf Mary Kraus Secreiary Mary Meridifh Business Manager Rex Raflnbun Adverfising Manager Margare+ Fuller STLIDE T BGDY CDFFICERS lqfl. wr' FACULTY As Vice Principal, MR. WOOD good nafuredly signs our parfy slips when Dr. Thompson is away, and as our Business Manager he carefully keeps frack of every penny and fakes a lol' of persuading before he le'l's us spend any school money. He lends his iudgmenf and experience fo all our financial problems. And he always has a pafienf smile and a helping hand for every sfudenf in woodshop, af fhe fypewrifer, and in his mechanical drawing classes. Ever since we have known C. H. S., Mr. Wood has been an indispensable and never failing parf of if and he probably always will be. Her quief, orderly, sunny room is like MRS. HULL'S feaching. Bofh are an unforgeffable parf of our High School experience. We may nof learn in+ellecfual curiosify by fhe end of our Senior year buf we cerfainly have learned English and how fo begin fo love and undersfand fhe greaf liferary works which are our herifage-all vividly colored by her ouflook and personalify. She is our charming, under- sfanding Dean of Girls and as advisor keeps fhe Sfudenf Council an efficienf, serious governmenf for fhe sfudenfs. She is Mrs. Hull, fhaf is enough. MISS KNUTSON'S firsf year af Claremonl' has increased whaf Junior High sfudenfs know abouf English a hundred per cenf. Wifh good hard work and consfanf drill she has laid a sfurdy foundafion in grammar and spelling which will sfand fhem in good sfead all fheir lives. Her valenfine boxes and iolly smile keep fhe younger members of our sfudenf body feeling af home and happy. No one has ever seen lively, kindly MRS. WILLIAMS when she wasn'+ ready fo undersfand and help. Always busy wifh fhe ice cream boofh, fhe candy sfand, advising fhe Red Cross, lending her broad experience and knowledge fo lively discussions in Biology and Household Managemenf classes, and her skillful fingers fo would-be seamsfresses, she sfill has her cu'I'e liffle laugh and overflowing energy affer a long, hard day. We iusf can I' wear her ouf! Providing his classes wifh a conglomerafion of jokes and scienfific facfs is MR. ARRINGTON, whose slow drawl and easy going ways endear him fo his General Science, Physics and Chemisfry classes. As head of our science deparfmenf his iob is a big and imporfanf one buf iusf 'rhe same he's always our good nafured, pafienf Mr. Arringfon. MEMBERS Always fhinking of inferesfing fhings for her French and Lafin classes fo do, MISS KNAPP finds fime for leading caroling in Lafin, enferfaining sfudenfs af supper while fhey speak French, mailing parcels fo France, and doing many ofher fhings besides fhe roufine work of feaching English and Romance Languages. Wifh fwinkling eyes behind his glasses and a ready chuckle, MR. SISTO hurries cheerfully from fhe Spanish room fo fhe sfage, one minufe coniugafing verbs and fhe nexf murdering a vicfim for fhe benefif of his casf. He has proved nof only a Spanish feacher wifh a sense of humor buf a play direcfor wifh real efficiency and skill and, more- over, we like him! We knew quief voiced, good humored MR. HALES among fhe pingpong fables af fhe Youfh Cenfer lasf summer so he found lofs of friends when he sfarfed his much needed remedial reading work here fhis fall. We found him more fun and more undersfanding fhan ever as he conscienfiously spenf fhe resf of his fime using up fhe surplus energy of our Junior High boys by coaching and arranging infer-school afhlefics for fhem. This was fhe pro- gram we have been wanfing and needing af Claremonf for many years and he did a wonderful iob wifh if. So anyone can see why all C. H. S. is crazy abouf Mr. Hales. Thaf genial smile doesn I' fool us. We know we can'f gef away wifh anyfhing around COACH MARTIN. Look if up, he fells lazy hisfory sfu- denfs in one of his fhree classes and if if's a foofball game or a frack meef we iusf go in fhere and do our besf, knowing he won'+ be safisfied wifh less. Sfimulafing discussions are whaf we look forward fo in MR. WlLBY'S Junior High social science classes. His gruff, fhoughfful commenfs make hisfory real and alive fo us. Buf when if comes fo his ofher job, discipline, we know fhere will be no discussion buf prompf, effecfive acfion which may make us angry buf also wins our respecf. .JL f I MRS. FITTS' classes lind her more lhan an ellicienl, capable leacher. They know her as a real lriend. Perhaps lhis is because she doesn'l give week-end assignmenls or, maybe, il's because she really likes us as individual people. Thal's why she's so good wilh our personalily lesls and why she works so hard lrying lo gel us inlo lhe Scholar- ship sociely. Jovial, beloved MR. BOOTH always seems lo be able lo sandwich a ioke in belween learned explanalions ol higher malh. How he can gel so enlhusiaslic over an equalion is more lhan we can undersland unlil we calch his spark and begin lo love malh, loo. He's always lhere on lhe slage loo, swilching lighls and hammering and fixing lhings. Il somelhing won'l work we iusl call for Mr. Boolh and know everylhing will be all righl. Buslling cheerfully around lhe library wilh an armlul ol books and an absorbed look on her lace, lhal's MRS. MAHONEY. Wherever she goes she radiales a love ol books, never so happy as when she's lelling sludenls iusl lhe righl book lor lhem or dramalically reading aloud lo an enlhusiaslic group. Her library praclice classes lailhlully lollow her around wilh pencils and slacks ol unshelved books, willing lo work hard jusl lo share in her enioymenl ol lhe library and lo learn lrom her experience in il. Wilh a slick in her hand and a lrghl in her eye MISS CORBEIL keeps her chorus classes singing wilh all lheir mighl unlil lhe lasl bell. She spends lhe resl ol her lime wilh special groups such as lhe ensemble and lhe quarlel, gelling lhem ready lor oulside performances. The orcheslra has lound MISS NELSON a hard worker and a skilllul direclor. She gives lhem lhe real salislaclion of doing a lopnolch job. There is no lel clown in praclice, and more praclice, wilh her lireless balon always bealing lime. MRS. McLELLAN's cule giggle and conlagious love ol arl has won lhe hearls ol her classes. Bedaubeol wilh painl and clay, lhey lry everylhing and lind lhal perspeclive is hard work even if modeling is sheer lun. Always on fhe go, sparkling, enfhusiasfic MISS COLBATH wears ouf her classes long before she loses her vifalify and high spirifs. She shares a keen enioymenf of every sporf wifh her gym classes who find if hard fo believe she isn'+ one of fhem. Her own original confribufion has been a skillful, loving presenfafion of modern inferprefive dancing fo fhe girls. She has made if as much a parf of our culfural educafion as arf, music, and liferafure. In G. A. A. fhe feams have found fhaf her consfanf encouragemenf and high sfandarcls make a big difference in fheir playing and sporfsmanship. ln his quief, modesf way MR. SPENCER has been responsible for 'rhe baskefball feam we are so proud of. The boys have found him a real gym feacher wifh ever ready commenfs for fhe lazy and much appreciafed praise for fhe good player. A greaf variefy of sporfs are going on af fhe same fime under his good-nafured supervision and when fhe boys go in from fhe field, fhey feel fhey've really earned fheir resf. VM Working efficienfly in an office fhaf resembles Grand Cenfral Sfafion are MRS. BECK and MRS. HOOPER, who manage fo do everyfhing from lending locker keys fo checking schedules-and Mrs. Hooper even managed fo gef married besides! Down in her cellar office MISS HENRICUS busily freafs cufs wifh iodine, fardiness wifh admif slips and irony and comes ouf in fhe affernoons fo ioke wifh Miss Colbafh and referee hockey. Clipping our hedges, picking up our papers, and driving us fo and from school wifh welcoming grins when we sfep on fhe bus are OTTO RALEY, ANDY MORGENSON and MR. FULLER. We are always hunfing for MR. GETTMAN, or fhe brooms by a door fhaf mean Mr. Geffman, and he's always busy, cleaning, sweeping, and picking up when we find him. Buf we know he'll drop his broom and open a locker for us, and give us a iolly smile, for he is our very special friend. 4 E 1 H., ,JVM .nz .wr .' if 1 5.5 A .gyjg 2 ,Lf ' '- Zi WW KJ' os T I , D 3 ' :fi .,.f , , , 2 f MW . .. :gfwmf ,QW I ,vw if i . .. ,,,4,,f, ,f V, ,,,,,,W 4 4 .,,g:1,A, 5,511-,,.,. .
