TEMPUS FUGITS Vacafion was over. I don'f quife remember if as such, buf I wenf back fo school so if musf have been. Was my face red, fhe beach you know. I noficed wifh chagrin fhaf everyone was fan buf me. And so wifh fhe usual lack of enfhusiasm and infelligence, I sfarfed anofher year and a session of fhe mosf difficulf looking geomefry ..... Much fo our sur- prise we had a foofball feam. If was a six-man feam, and good af fhaf. There were games wifh Sierra Milifary Acad- emy, Bonifa, Valencia, and Berkeley Hall in rapid succession. Then for a change of scenery, fhe Juniors gave a dafe- bureau dance. If was a change-fhe Iibrary was sfrewn wifh rags from book shelf fo book shelf. I guess fhere were a Iof of people fhere, 'cause even I gof fo fhaf affair. And fhe foofball feam kepf winning games all fhis fime, buf if seemed fhaf no one would come ouf fo see fhe boys play. And fhen fhe Sophomores gave fheir dance, and if I re- member correcfly, fhe highlighf of fhe evening was punch and cookies fo spare, and oh, how I like punch and cookies fo spare. And fhen, following a few weeks of secref planning and whispering campaigns, fhe Juniors wifh fhe help of fhe Seniors sprung fheir beige class sweafers, and fhe class furned ouf en masse for fhe Oxy Rally fhaf nighf in fheir new pride and ioys. The Oxy Rally bonfire was fun, buf fhe dance in fhe Sfudenf Union, mingling wifh college life. was more fun. Then came fhe girls' chance fo shine-afhlefically of course. There was a play-day af Bonifa, and we did preffy well for ourselves. By fhaf fime fhe firsf quarfer was over, and I hadn'f even gof seffled-scholasfically. The Iighf hadn'f yef dawned in geomefry .... Nexf came fhe foofball banquef sponsored by fhe Girls' League, and fhaf was really an affair. If was held af fhe Oxford Inn and fhe food-M-m-m-m-m-m. The Inn was bedecked wifh bal- Icons and fhey sfarfed flying around when fhe formalify wore off. Affer fhe food came senfimenfs from all fhe players. Then we-I was fhere foo, goodie-adjourned fo fhe Civic. Then nexf week came fhe Sfudenf Body play, and many young hopefuls showed fheir fhespian falenfs. I guess we were really surprised af fhe display of falenf fhaf nighf. You know, before long, if was fhe Chrisfmas vacafion, and l 'look home my geomefry book in case I found any fime-I didn'f. lnsfead I wrofe ouf a Chrisfmas lis+ and mailed if special delivery 'I'o Sanfa Claus. I guess he didn'f gef if in fime .... Well, affer we came back, if was fime for fhe baskefball season. lf's funny, I can'f remember fhe scores. Oh, buf we did win a league game. Annual Week came along and everywhere all you could hear was high-pressure sales falking, and af fhe oufcome if was discovered fhaf fhe sales had reached an all-fime new high. Baskefball wenf on as usual. The girls venfured fo Puenfe fo a speedball play-day, and fhe maiorify broughf home ribbons fo show for fheir fime and efforf. Then a pep-rally commiffee gof a brain-sform, in fhe form of nighf rallies wifh bushels of falenf and fun. Turn-oufs for fhe games showed fhe effecfs of fhe pep rousing. Then fhe only formal dance of fhe year was given, wifh hearfs and flowers as fhe fheme. If was fhe annual dance, and if was really nice. The Seniors had a number of class parfies fhaf were fhe envy of everyone, buf whaf made fhe enfire school envious was fhe Senior Difch

Day. The whole class forgof fheir lessons for one day and 'fook ouf for Big Pines and fhe snow. Thaf nighf fhe maiorify wenf fo fhe movies. Then Shelley Swan's orchesfra's services were acquired for fhe very successful Girl's League dance, held af fhe club house. Everyone-pracfically-was fhere. Me foo. The inferclass frack meef was fhe nexf big evenf, and fhe juniors came ouf firsf in fhaf, and fhus fhe frack season was sfarfed and a good season, foo. Our dash man was very surprising, and he gof good wrife-ups in fhe papers. The French Club fook fhe lighf for fhe nexf big shindig- fhe Mardi Gras. A puppy was given away, and fhere were games and prizes of all sorfs. The gafhering was amazing. Then fhe Juniors offered fheir confribufion fo fhe fheafre. A ioinf program was held wifh one-acf plays being pre- senfed by Bonifa and Downey also. A field frip fo fhe Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles was a big evenf for fhe Junior American Democracy classes, buf fhen fhe whole school enjoyed fhe G.A.A. inifiafion. The girls were really a scream. l laugh fo fhink how fhey looked in baggy dresses, braids and painfed faces. And fhen spring vacafion was iusf in fhe nick of fime. l was iusf on fhe verge of a nervous breakdown. l couldn'f gef geomefry fhrough my head .... even when fhe second semesfer sfarfed abouf fhe fime of fhe Girls' League Dance if hadn'f begun fo seep fhrough 'rhe denseness. The exams didn'f help any. Well, 'l'l1ere was a divisional frack meef for fhe qualificafion of fhe Tri-Counfy meef, and a couple of fhe fellas placed easily. Af fhe end of vacafion week fhe finals were held and fhey each broughf home medals. The girls gof fhe spoflighf again. The hockey playday was held af Claremonf, and again we did preffy well for ourselves. There was an invifafional meef af Laguna and fhere were more medals fo be displayed. The Girls' League gave fheir fwo fine plays, and abouf fhe same fime fhe boys base- ball season gof under way. And we had a feam fo be proud of. l don'f mean maybe. Then fhere was fhe Tri- Counfy Music Fesfival and all fhe larks and crows and sparrows and such did fheir sfuff. The girls again fraveled away-fhis fime fo Downey-for some baseball and swimming. The Senior plays came nexf-fhey were good, foo. And fhe Seniors made everyone green-eyed again when fhey had fheir beach parfy, buf fhen on Memorial Day fhe Wolf Packef Sfaff fook a day off, alfhough fhere was a holiday, and wenf fo fhe beach foo. The Seniors gave fhe lasf dance of fhe year. The big success was a shipwreck parfy, sfaged in fhe girls' gym. The place was decorafed by fhe Seniors wifh vines of all sorfs lan epidemic of poison oak followedl. And fhe lasf week of school. l guess for fhe Seniors if was preffy sad, mosf of fhe ofhers were preffy glad. l couldn l' quife make up my mind. There were so many finals and fhings. l don'f know whaf l gof on my geomefry-l was foo afraid fo look af fhe paper when he handed if back fo me. l'll iusf frusf fo luck-fhaf's all fhaf's leff. ln rapid succession fhere was fhe Senior Assembly, some wepf. Then fhe biggesf evenf of fhe whole year-fhe Jr.-Sr. Recepfion, and all fhe girls looked so preffy and fhe boys so formal. lf was swell-lighfs were low and fhe music was soff. The Senior Dinner for fhe kids and fheir parenfs was nexf. Buf lasf of all-whaf fhe Seniors had looked forward fo all year-fheir commencemenf, and fhey all looked so nice l nearly wepf. They leff good old Claremonf High forever. And here l am. l hope l passed my geomefry.
