MR. HUGH WILBY. TOWARDS THIS, AIMS OUR BOOK The year of I94I has been one of sorrow and hardship for Ihe whole world, especially Ihose naI'ions in Europe figI'1+ing Io preserve Ihe principles of Democracy. We, Ioo, in our own school are sfriving 'ro uphold +he Iheories of our governmenl Ihrough our daily work in class, on I'he field and in our social life. This year we have Ialcen as our Iheme fhe ideals of +he Greek race, believing +ha+ fhey in I'heir way, as we in ours, s+rove To glorify Iheir Iheories of Democracy. Wi+h +his in mind, we presenf Io you EI Espirilu de I94I , hoping Ihal you will derive as gre-a+ a pleasure in reading as we did in preparing i+s four divisions: FACULTY AND CLASS LIFE STUDENT BODY THE ARTS SPORTS AND STUDENT LIFE TEMPUS FUGITS Vacafion was over. I don'f quife remember if as such, buf I wenf back fo school so if musf have been. Was my face red, fhe beach you know. I noficed wifh chagrin fhaf everyone was fan buf me. And so wifh fhe usual lack of enfhusiasm and infelligence, I sfarfed anofher year and a session of fhe mosf difficulf looking geomefry ..... Much fo our sur- prise we had a foofball feam. If was a six-man feam, and good af fhaf. There were games wifh Sierra Milifary Acad- emy, Bonifa, Valencia, and Berkeley Hall in rapid succession. Then for a change of scenery, fhe Juniors gave a dafe- bureau dance. If was a change-fhe Iibrary was sfrewn wifh rags from book shelf fo book shelf. I guess fhere were a Iof of people fhere, 'cause even I gof fo fhaf affair. And fhe foofball feam kepf winning games all fhis fime, buf if seemed fhaf no one would come ouf fo see fhe boys play. And fhen fhe Sophomores gave fheir dance, and if I re- member correcfly, fhe highlighf of fhe evening was punch and cookies fo spare, and oh, how I like punch and cookies fo spare. And fhen, following a few weeks of secref planning and whispering campaigns, fhe Juniors wifh fhe help of fhe Seniors sprung fheir beige class sweafers, and fhe class furned ouf en masse for fhe Oxy Rally fhaf nighf in fheir new pride and ioys. The Oxy Rally bonfire was fun, buf fhe dance in fhe Sfudenf Union, mingling wifh college life. was more fun. Then came fhe girls' chance fo shine-afhlefically of course. There was a play-day af Bonifa, and we did preffy well for ourselves. By fhaf fime fhe firsf quarfer was over, and I hadn'f even gof seffled-scholasfically. The Iighf hadn'f yef dawned in geomefry .... Nexf came fhe foofball banquef sponsored by fhe Girls' League, and fhaf was really an affair. If was held af fhe Oxford Inn and fhe food-M-m-m-m-m-m. The Inn was bedecked wifh bal- Icons and fhey sfarfed flying around when fhe formalify wore off. Affer fhe food came senfimenfs from all fhe players. Then we-I was fhere foo, goodie-adjourned fo fhe Civic. Then nexf week came fhe Sfudenf Body play, and many young hopefuls showed fheir fhespian falenfs. I guess we were really surprised af fhe display of falenf fhaf nighf. You know, before long, if was fhe Chrisfmas vacafion, and l 'look home my geomefry book in case I found any fime-I didn'f. lnsfead I wrofe ouf a Chrisfmas lis+ and mailed if special delivery 'I'o Sanfa Claus. I guess he didn'f gef if in fime .... Well, affer we came back, if was fime for fhe baskefball season. lf's funny, I can'f remember fhe scores. Oh, buf we did win a league game. Annual Week came along and everywhere all you could hear was high-pressure sales falking, and af fhe oufcome if was discovered fhaf fhe sales had reached an all-fime new high. Baskefball wenf on as usual. The girls venfured fo Puenfe fo a speedball play-day, and fhe maiorify broughf home ribbons fo show for fheir fime and efforf. Then a pep-rally commiffee gof a brain-sform, in fhe form of nighf rallies wifh bushels of falenf and fun. Turn-oufs for fhe games showed fhe effecfs of fhe pep rousing. Then fhe only formal dance of fhe year was given, wifh hearfs and flowers as fhe fheme. If was fhe annual dance, and if was really nice. The Seniors had a number of class parfies fhaf were fhe envy of everyone, buf whaf made fhe enfire school envious was fhe Senior Difch Day. The whole class forgof fheir lessons for one day and 'fook ouf for Big Pines and fhe snow. Thaf nighf fhe maiorify wenf fo fhe movies. Then Shelley Swan's orchesfra's services were acquired for fhe very successful Girl's League dance, held af fhe club house. Everyone-pracfically-was fhere. Me foo. The inferclass frack meef was fhe nexf big evenf, and fhe juniors came ouf firsf in fhaf, and fhus fhe frack season was sfarfed and a good season, foo. Our dash man was very surprising, and he gof good wrife-ups in fhe papers. The French Club fook fhe lighf for fhe nexf big shindig- fhe Mardi Gras. A puppy was given away, and fhere were games and prizes of all sorfs. The gafhering was amazing. Then fhe Juniors offered fheir confribufion fo fhe fheafre. A ioinf program was held wifh one-acf plays being pre- senfed by Bonifa and Downey also. A field frip fo fhe Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles was a big evenf for fhe Junior American Democracy classes, buf fhen fhe whole school enjoyed fhe G.A.A. inifiafion. The girls were really a scream. l laugh fo fhink how fhey looked in baggy dresses, braids and painfed faces. And fhen spring vacafion was iusf in fhe nick of fime. l was iusf on fhe verge of a nervous breakdown. l couldn'f gef geomefry fhrough my head .... even when fhe second semesfer sfarfed abouf fhe fime of fhe Girls' League Dance if hadn'f begun fo seep fhrough 'rhe denseness. The exams didn'f help any. Well, 'l'l1ere was a divisional frack meef for fhe qualificafion of fhe Tri-Counfy meef, and a couple of fhe fellas placed easily. Af fhe end of vacafion week fhe finals were held and fhey each broughf home medals. The girls gof fhe spoflighf again. The hockey playday was held af Claremonf, and again we did preffy well for ourselves. There was an invifafional meef af Laguna and fhere were more medals fo be displayed. The Girls' League gave fheir fwo fine plays, and abouf fhe same fime fhe boys base- ball season gof under way. And we had a feam fo be proud of. l don'f mean maybe. Then fhere was fhe Tri- Counfy Music Fesfival and all fhe larks and crows and sparrows and such did fheir sfuff. The girls again fraveled away-fhis fime fo Downey-for some baseball and swimming. The Senior plays came nexf-fhey were good, foo. And fhe Seniors made everyone green-eyed again when fhey had fheir beach parfy, buf fhen on Memorial Day fhe Wolf Packef Sfaff fook a day off, alfhough fhere was a holiday, and wenf fo fhe beach foo. The Seniors gave fhe lasf dance of fhe year. The big success was a shipwreck parfy, sfaged in fhe girls' gym. The place was decorafed by fhe Seniors wifh vines of all sorfs lan epidemic of poison oak followedl. And fhe lasf week of school. l guess for fhe Seniors if was preffy sad, mosf of fhe ofhers were preffy glad. l couldn l' quife make up my mind. There were so many finals and fhings. l don'f know whaf l gof on my geomefry-l was foo afraid fo look af fhe paper when he handed if back fo me. l'll iusf frusf fo luck-fhaf's all fhaf's leff. ln rapid succession fhere was fhe Senior Assembly, some wepf. Then fhe biggesf evenf of fhe whole year-fhe Jr.-Sr. Recepfion, and all fhe girls looked so preffy and fhe boys so formal. lf was swell-lighfs were low and fhe music was soff. The Senior Dinner for fhe kids and fheir parenfs was nexf. Buf lasf of all-whaf fhe Seniors had looked forward fo all year-fheir commencemenf, and fhey all looked so nice l nearly wepf. They leff good old Claremonf High forever. And here l am. l hope l passed my geomefry. d I QW ls s if 'ii if p t x dig Q L , of FACULTY AND CLASS LIFE Grea+ Jove, fo whose almigh+y +hrone Bofh gods and morfals homage pay. -Byron THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS No doubl' every one of you oflen wonders whal' 1'he fu'rure has in sfore for you? YET BEYOND THIS ln fhe wheaf belf of cenfral Minnesofa, eifher parfially hidden by waving grain fields or snow driffs, lies fhe small, inconspicuous, farming village of Benson. Mosf of fhe families living fhere gain fheir livelihood from fheir wheaf fields, and fhe maiorify of fhem are of Swedish herifage-fhe sfrong, handsome peasanfs of Sweden -blond, broad-faced and honesf, wifh clear blue eyes. They are a hard working people, and fheir prosperous village shows fhe foil of generafions. The mosf im- porfanf business in Benson is wheaf farming, and mosf of Benson's populafion, in one way or anofher, is connecfed wifh if. Of course, fhere are a few of fhe sfore owners who don'f do much farming, buf fhe majorify gain their livelihood from fhe wheaf fields. The Bergson farm was nof far from Benson. lf was a fine one, wifh good fields, and fhe Bergsons were a Swedish family of good peasanf sfock. Their farm was one of fhe largesf and mosf prosperous in fhe secfion, and was only a mile soufh of Olsen's school, on fhe Pine River road. The four Bergson children, when fhey were small, rode horseback fhere every day. There were six in fhe family: Ma and Pa, and fheir fhree sons, Olaf, Gus, and Eric. and fhen fhere was fhe daughfer, Hildegarde. I guess fhaf Hildegarde was always fhe pef of fhe family. She was fhe youngesf, fhe only girl, and fhe boys always seemed fo give in fo her. She was blonde, so were fhe boys for fha? maffer, and she was ferribly preffy-slim and willowy, and rafher wisfful. Buf she was demanding, and saw fo if fhaf she gof whaf she wanfed. The boys fairly worshipped her, and Ma and Pa always gave in, foo. lf was always like fhaf when fhe Bergson children were young, and when fhey finally grew up if was fhe boys who suggesfed fo Pa fhaf he send Hildy away fo designing school-she'd always had a falenf for drawing. Hildy had been rafher resfless and dissafisfied wifh fhe possibilifies for advancemenf in fhe liffle village of Benson, so Pa and Ma, Eric, Olaf, and Gus gafhered fogefher fheir resources and senf her off fo New York. The boys were rafher lonesome for a while, buf fhey knew fhaf if was whaf Hildy wanfed, so fhey were happy. The Bergson boys were fine, big boys-sfrong peasanf boys and fhey were all good-nafured, honesf, and hard working. Eric and Gus and Olaf all farmed, and planned fo marry someday, nice young farm girls from Benson, and have fheir own sons, and fheir own wheaf fields. The boys always rafher felf, or perhaps hoped, fhaf Hildy would marry Pefer Ingrid. They'd always gone fogefher, since fhey were freshmen in high school, in facf, and everyone knew fhaf Pefer had made up his mind, and was sef on having Hildy or no one. Buf Hildy wasn'f sure. l fhink fhaf she wanfed somefhing beffer-nof beffer exacfly, buf some- one wifh more fo offer fhan a wheaf field and a fair-sized farm house. Well, anyway, Hildy wenf off fo school. Ma and Pa gof occasional leffers, buf she didn'f say much abouf her school. lf was always fhe good fimes, fhe parfies, and fhe rich people she had mef. Ma and Pa were secrefly worried, buf bravely puf forfh an efforf fo hide fheir anxiefy. The winfer session ended af school, buf Hildy didn'f come home. lnsfead she senf a leffer saying she was spending fhe summer in New York wifh friends. Perhaps she would find work, as a model. The boys were disappoinfedl So were Ma and Pa. Gus and Eric bofh married fhe nexf fall-nice farm girls from Benson. They boughf up some land adjoining fhe Bergson farm, and seffled in fheir new homes. Olaf sfayed wifh Ma and Pa, and sorf of looked affer fhem. The fresh aufumn rains came and fhen furned info snows, leaving fhe once golden wheaf fields enveloped in silenf whife. And fhen word came-Hildy was coming home for fhe Chrisfmas holidays. The Bergsons were overioyed, and immediafely began -preparafions for her homecoming. If wasn'f quife like Ma and Pa and Olaf had fhoughf if would be. Eric and Gus. and fheir wives, were disappoinfed, foo. Hildegarde was grown up. She was a meal lady, wifh a perf liffle haf, a fur coaf, and her hair curled high on her head. She was casual and rafher sophisficafed when she said, Hello, everybody. l'm really ferribly glad fo be home, and she wasn'f very sincere. Relafions were sfrained, and fhe Bergsons were a sfrange family, nof af all like fhe old fimes. The day before Chrisfmas Hildegarde came info fhe kifchen where Ma was baking. She was dressed in whife slacks wifh a preffy, liffle, fuzzy, blue sweafer. Ma looked af her preffy daughfer approvingly, buf saw fhaf Hildy had been crying. Ma furned back fo her baking fo avoid Hildy's look. Hildy finally spoke, Ma, l don'f know whaf fo do. l saw Pefer lasf nighf, and he wanfs me fo sfay af Benson. He wanfs me fo marry him. Ma was pleased, buf Hildy said, l fold him, no. l can'f marry Peferg I iusf can'f. I love him, yes, buf fhere are more fhings in fhe world fhan love and a wheaf field. Even if you don'f see if, fhere are. l can see if. All my life l've wanfed more. OIaf's been falking fo me, buf he can'f persuade meg l won'f lef him. You're fhinking l won'f be happy, aren'f you, buf, Ma, clofhes, and parfies, and rich friends mean a greaf deal. They're whaf l've wanfed ever since l can remember, and now fhaf fhey're so near l'm nof going fo give fhem up-nof for Pefer, or for you or Pa or Olaf, or anyone, or anyfhing. l'm going back fo New York fomorrow. l've gof fo pack now. She defianlly walked from lhe room, leaving Ma quielly weeping unseen lears. Hildy lell lhe nexl day. The Bergsons and Peler lngrid saw her off al lhe slalion, bul Hildy didn'l look back. She was afraid she mighl grow weak, perhaps decide lo slay. Ma knew, in her hearl she knew, lhal all Hildy's chances for a real life, lor real happiness, were gone. Bul Hildy was young, and when you are young your sense of values is oflen dimmed by lhe gliller of your ambilions and your aspiralions. Ma couldn'l lell Hildy: she'd have lo learn, lhe hard way.
