Dear Graduates of 194-7: Baltimore needs leaders form the teen-age group, young men and young women who are willing to assume responsi- bility in the home, at work, and in the community. Many of the city's youth do not want to take responsibility and all it entails because it requires time, sacrifice, effort and less time for self-centered activities. All through your school life, the teachers at Barton have kept before you the need for the right kind of leadership and have done everything possible to de- velop qualities for good leadership. Every experience in school and out has been planned to this end so that you can advance in your work and be ready and willing to assume community responsibility. . My hope is that Barton has succeeded in developing in you an attitude to accept your full 'responsibility of citizenship cheerfully and to fulfill your obligations with courage and satisfaction. And this is exaetly what Iiarton Yoeational Iligb has to oITer eaeh graduate. A turn of the Dial over Station BYHS. and we have the first feature ol' the Trades Program, the Business Depart- ment, the best equipped junior olliee praetiee department in in any publie sehool ol' Baltimore. And judging from the number enrolled in this Department, it seems to be the most popular. Whether the student is preparing for general olhee, see- retarial. elerieal, or ofliee maehine work, training is provided for every kind ol' aetivity whieh she will later experienee on the job. In her senior year every student embarks upon an experi- enee known as the Cooperative Plan. This plan provides fora week on the aetual business job and a week in sehool. This alternating arrangement persists until she is graduated. Here the business world and the sehool assume jointly the responsibility of every studentis training, and the student in turn is stimulated by the IIIOSI genuine motivation possible. As a graduate she is a happily adiusted individual, ready to serve the business community ol' Baltimore. Each student progresses at her own rate of ability and it is good to note that quite a number is finished much before the pre-determined deadline. All this adds up to eflieieney. But equally important is growth of personality and eharaeter whieh every girl will acknowledge as one of the great ehanges which she experi- ences at' HYHS. Yoeationally equipped, the Business girl knows truly the real meaning of happiness. . 9 'Lv' N, l I k Obfdk MILLI ERY AN ACCESSORII DRESSMAKING AND DESIG Nlillinvry nnnl plc-4'e'ssnr'ir-s. llrwssinnlxing mul lk-sign nrt' lxsn l'Ulll'5t'N tlml vain nut ln' mllxnrm-1l.l2n1'li islllt'llitlltllllilItl1'Iltil tln' ulln-r, anul lun ln' tim tln-y gn nmrvlnng mln tht- l'.il5ll'l , . . . lnraulu- uitli ull tln- im tlmt m'1-miipniiln-s sllt'4't'Nwllll 1'I't'LllIUll. .Mljusl your llinl lor tliesf- 1-niirsvs, mul you run ln- tlif- In-st tlrc-ssvml lussiv ul' your vmnniun- ity xx itll gi trillv ninre- tlinn at slim-strilig tu pay tht- lnll, lun-ry l,I4t'SrlllLllx I' lvurns lln- ins uml outs ul nnllnn-rv nn'l lllxvnlsf' vwlw' lVlllllllt'l' In-1-mm-s, ns tn-ll. at first vlnss tlrvssninlwr. llutli 1'ol1rs1's rnnlw linux' tlt'IIlilIlllS upon Appliml Art. To know the whole. to experience the besti, that is yct to be,i' the world must wake up and mature socially, emotionally and spiritually as well. It is better human relations and character which must receive the accent for the days which lie ahead. Thus believes Barton, and for these reasons she is keen to these needs of youth. To develop insight into the right and wrong of daily conduct, to grow in the power to understand all kinds of people, to help shape a philosophy of lifes! these are some of the goals in English, be it drama, verse, story, or prose in- tended to improve human relations. Ever on the alert to discover the un- derlying principles which are basic to the right and wrong of contem- porary history and to select the truths and large understandings from the pages of past history, students in social studies learn to recognize what should and should not be for the better human relations of tomor- row. Norma Vinup serving as moderator, guides the panel dis- cussion in English on the subject of euthanasia. This yes-and-no discussion gave the girls a chance to Nairn social. emotional, and spiritual values. As a part of the social studies program, Barton along with other schools had its turn over VVBAL, discussing the question of daylight saving time. Joining and participating in such organizations as the U. N. Youth Assoc., Allied Youth, and C. S. P. A. for journalists, taking trips to New York, Wasliiiigtciri, and signihcant points about our town, visiting organizations for the uplift of minority groupsg and worshipping in various churches not of one,s own denomination-all served to provide a respect for and an understanding of th many differences in people and their problems. 42 THE MOST SLIBSTANTIAL PEOPLE are the most frugal and make the least show, and live at the least expense, said Francis Moore in 1711. What has this to do with Barton and hetter human relations? To he sure, the many many girls, who lvanli every'l'ln1rsrlay morning learn- ing to lie thrifty anrl systematie in their saving. must he some relation to these 'smost sub- stantial people. These girls, too. will know that smooth run human relations when the piggy hank is full. Managing financial neecls with the greatest of ease is the province of the Math. Depart- rnent. Learning to lruilget, to cheek taxes, ancl to heeome in- telligent eonsumers in gen- eral is only a part of this large area of eclueation. Againwehavehetter human relations in evidence, hetter known to the girls as thrift and planning ability. 65 NOW FOR THE FU of just being together, of learning to giv and take, of putting into practice th ideas and ideals that make for bette living! The letters shared at lunch, the prank pulled,,' the jokes told, the laughs had and discussions that heated furnaces her and there-all helped in respectin others' opinions and in enabling each an all to get along together smoothly an enjoyably. Jitterbugging in the gym! Who's deny ing that this helped socially? And then, remember the Junior Te Dance? Though a little shy, the Junior hope that the guests, the boys from th Mergenthaler Vocational High School o Printing, enjoyed the get-together. Climaxing all our social pleasures wa the banquet and dance at the Lord Balti more. To many it was the first night o formal evening, and grand were th memories of that gala occasion. Perhap some day school parties may become inter national and inter-racial as was the mem orable get-together dinner at Easter at which gathering Baltimore high schoo students entertained the students fro South America. This would be one of th finest ways of achieving better huma relations. PUT YOUR BEST FOGT FORWARD for better human relations. There is the know how in meeting people, in greeting people, in partying, in danc- ing, and many, many ways of socializing. So for those who yearn for surface charm to help a golden heart look good, there is the Charm Club under Mrs. Annan's direction. To dress in good taste, and to have that well-groomed look is an essential in achieving good human relations. Of course, a good book is not judged by its cover. Nevertheless, the cover helps. The girls who belong to the Dressmaking Club are also beginning early to make the most of what they have for better human relations. The Know Your City Club under the direc- tion of Mrs. Janssen gets to know the old and new of Baltimore. This Club believes that the more intelligent one becomes the more one can and should give socially for the welfare of all.
