EW TWISTS in the Language Department Greetings in four languages to the electronic language laboratory with its dials, pushbuttons, and earphones! The purpose of this new equip- ment is to aid the student in speaking the language he studies and in understanding the spoken word. Its installation was made possible by the National Defense Act which provides that the government pay half the cost of im- provements for teaching languages. Beginning in January, students listened to recorded voices of native speakers, recorded their own voices, heard them played back, and had their pronun- ciation errors pointed out. Teachers had to master the operation of the intricate control panels and spend much time making their own tapes since not enough commercial material is yet available. They felt like true pioneers.
